I use AirBuddy on the FireTV and FireHDX to reproduce series which have been transformed with iFlicks and then imported into iTunes. Also does the stream from the iPhone with iOS 7 easily.
Although Airbuddy can also videos, music and photos to send but I've never tested the function.

What is not currently going playback of copy-protected video from iTunes, Netflix, AirPlay Mirroring, and some other things that are also described in the app help.

I really hoped to achieve with Kodi (formerly XBMC) free the same result but unfortunately did not always manage to establish connection between iTunes and FireTV.
The 72 cents for InApp purchase the full version of AirBuddy I've no regrets.
I think it is a good alternative to more expensive AirReciever when the Airplay Mirroring does not need.
