A double-edged sword

Why I have chosen for a ebook reader:

I am a student and have little space. Very little space when compared to space that remains for me to live with the worlds that seem to fill my book hunger. I love the feel and the smell of freshly printed books. Should I exchange these pleasures to the odor and haptiklose, almost cold and ruthless-looking eBook world? What's the big plastic versus paper? I have long considered and wrestled with me. Finally, my immeasurable lack of space, but also the interest for something new has convinced me that an eBook reader is currently my only and best solution.

Why I chose for the Sony PRS-T1 WC:

I addition to my space problem also (still) can not swim in money, I am of course working intensively in advance with the reader market. It is supposed to be something good. The Sony Reader has convinced me of all available on the German market readers the most. Why?

1. I am not bound to eBook stores. Compared to the Kindle, I can decide which provider I want to refer my book.

1.5 I can equip the reader without Sony server with books / PDFs. Simply connect using the USB cable to the laptop / PC and easily transfer DRM-free ePubs drag and drop them to the Reader. Could not be easier.

2. The Sony Reader allows me quite well and comfortable to read PDFs. Since I have many book excerpts available as PDF in the study, I can save myself by continuous printing. If I can estimate, the Sony Reader is currently offering one of the best PDF representations, although they are capable of optimization. So I can, for example (relatively) simple change in panoramic mode and then jump easily by pressing a button between the top and the bottom of the page back and forth. That may not be enough many, but when I see how terribly complicated and ugly the PDF display and operation with other similar devices is, then I'm completely satisfied.

3. No PRS-T1 specific feature, but for all booklovers who also like want time to read a book, for example in English, the integrated dictionary function is really great. It is true that dictionaries are not sooo extensive, such as online dictionaries like dict.cc, but for normal use, it is enough perfectly.

4. When Sony reader have not waived the keys, which is a big advantage over other Touch models for me. Accordingly you when scrolling is not subject to compulsion to touch the screen.

What bothers me the Sony PRS-T1:

Unfortunately, unfortunately, the Reader is not perfect. For the price (I bought the Reader at Saturn for 139 euros) there are a few problems that bother me.

1. My Reader creaks. At first I can not detect any pressure noise, but after a little over a month falls on me, that gives the upper right corner a clearly audible "Knaaarz" by itself when the plastic housing with the fingers slightly, but compresses without pressure, which even provided -depending on how you can pass the reader Rela-. In other places there is a creaking ceased.

2. The corners of the back of the Reader discolor. I transport the reader in a Adore-June-bag (originally for the Kindle, but fits perfectly), live in a Non smoking budget and protect the reader as well as possible against external influences. Unfortunately, that did not help anything. This may on the one hand due to my bag, but probably is also the somewhat "softer" rubberized back of the reader almost predestined to take up the color of the cloth bag magical.

3. The Android-based software should be urgently revised. Unfortunately, it happened to me too often, that the error message "Reader has unexpectedly quit" appears. Just like the reader once skips a few pages forward, what is even more upsetting, especially when you're reading an exciting book site (just think about the resolution of a gripping thriller) and by software failure, the resolution is anticipated. Likewise, I have experienced it, that the Reader displays an earlier page at a later time again. At first I thought that this is a bug in the ePub file, but after a reboot (sometimes it's enough already to reduce the font size and then to increase again) behaves the Reader is back to normal.

4. Often addressed: Unfortunately there is still no own Sony Store. At least not in Germany. Who wants to buy English-language books, which I can only recommend to change the region settings. Then work the store, but of course only with foreign literature.

(+) Toll on Sony reader is:
... The independence of Sony, both as regards the book purchase, as well as the transfer to the Reader (PDF and DRM-free ePubs)
... The good PDF functionality. PDFs can be relatively good and easy to view.
... The dictionary function. Read foreign language literature, the easy way!
... The touch screen. The infrared control works very well.

(-) On the other hand I would like improvements in the following things:
... The quality of workmanship. Knarzen not affect functionality, but should not occur in a nearly new equipment.
... Verfärbungsfreudigkeit the rubberized back
... Software. Too many crashes, infidelities, or sideways movements
... Still no Sony Store. Weak when you consider that the PRS-T2 safe coming soon to stores.
... The Wörtbuchfunktion. Unfortunately, there is no way to integrate their own dictionaries. Moreover, the vocabulary size is limited.

Despite the errors mentioned here I am enthusiastic about the eBook reading. The Sony Reader is a pleasure to use and has proven to be surprisingly comfortable. The problems / errors are annoying, but not to the extent (at the moment) that I personally would want to give the reader back. It is normally sufficient to restart the device.
That's why I forgive for now 4 of 5 stars.
