A writer relatively unknown in France, whose life and work is now too often reduced to the mere creation of Sissinhurst gardens which are indeed exceptional. Vita and Harold deserve more than that. An amazing couple who write and each lead a modern life, even if it may surprise more than one. Behind the mask allows us to enter the heart of the characters associated with the writers, artists, politicians of their time on the sidelines of the Group of Bloomsberry, or rather at the margins of this movement, we enter the intimacy of this woman, without self-censorship in previous biographies. It also sees the importance of homosexuality in the British intellectual circles, without this shock even the most conservative of us. A fascinating book that I read with passion.
