I regret it in the first volume, lack of development, but this volume made me changed my mind! Indeed, we see that it is much more psychological and dark as it puts forward many thoughts and feelings of the characters, especially those of Day. It seems to close in on itself from the first pages of the book. Indeed, he had lost his mother, executed before his eyes, because of June, then he has just learned that his older brother sacrificed himself in his place, when run. What make someone crazy and unhappy. So, despite himself, he continues to blame in June, just another social environment him and yet, almost as many as he lost because of the Republic. Despite the various opinions I've read about it, instead I was conquered by this facet of the story.
On the other hand, it was June who seems not to know where she is in her feelings for Day and his duty to the Republic. Somehow I got the feeling she was becoming more human, compared to the first volume where it looked like a robot.
There are also the character of Tess, who joined the patriots and became more mature. While she was less prominent in the first volume, she now dares to stand up to Day and others, even if it still seems intimidated face June. His feelings come from elsewhere complicate things for Day.
For Anden, I struggled to make myself an opinion on him, especially as we see the perspective of June which also has trouble getting a point of view on it. So, one wonders whether his intentions are really good ...
The first volume was more focused on the Republic and I then deplored the lack of information on the background, while it highlights the patriots and the settlements, which helped me to understand the context in which lived characters and how the Republic was established.
I enjoyed learning more about these "rebels". The plots appear to bind and unlike the first volume, the plot is even more riddled with false pretenses. The allies are not always those that have believed. The dignent trustworthy people be counted on the fingers of one hand and the enemy of June and Day is not necessarily the one they think. In short, the characters do not know who to trust, and confidence collapses. So, we do not see through the pages.
You will see that the end is very surprising and leaves us with a bitter taste, closing the book. I hope the author will continue to surprise us in Volume 3 I look forward.
