Customer Review

For over 20 years I have been working professionally in photography and have many systems come and go. In the area of (D) SLR cameras have always been Canon and Nikon dominated the field. I work in the field of people photography and have been increasingly put on my Canon cameras (5D M2 / M3) and div. Glasses.

Who has ever carried out a 3-4h shoot while correspondingly fast lenses brought to use, the setting, as can pain behind the shoulder / the camera arm. The full-frame sensor of these cameras is considered the "gold standard" especially at high ISO values. So why now an Olympus M1?

The Olympus M1 in use
=====================

First, the substantially lower weight is to come naturally into play - it drags at high light intensity much less kg around with them and can take pictures without fatigue over a longer period. So far so clear. However, the M1 comes up with a lot of new features that make real competition in the sum of any modern DSLR.

The new contrast AF in combination with an intelligent face and eye detection focused with the MFT lenses and rapidly getting to the point. If you like, please read this my div. Reviews to the MFT lenses. The contrast AF is always sharp ... I have my cameras and lenses once given in to the nearest CPS service for adjustment, so that the "focus" of lenses and camera is exactly the same. This madness does not apply to this system, since the contrast autofocus recognizes the highest edge contrast, and is not dependent on distance information of the camera, which must then be interpreted and implemented in accordance with the attached lens. I tend to like systems such as "Eye and face detection" and have not been appropriately shifted the focus points of the 5D M3 on the model's face to set the focus. This does not apply to the M1 perfectly and you can fully concentrate on the picture composition -, the focus is also on at maximum aperture perfectly.

The M1 is the housing side stabilized. Thus, each connected lens is stabilized - so you need unlike eg Panasonic not buy stabilized lenses - very pleasant, especially the lower weight of the lenses which also benefited. The exemption level of M1 is actually inferior because of the smaller sensor a full frame system - but with eg 75mm (= 150 mm KB) is no longer the question of a creamy exemption - also the lens is absolutely superb in resolution and processing quality (more about that in the appropriate review).

The housing of the M1 is a high quality camera to adjust jet and dust protected and freezeproof to -10 °. I have had a 3h shoot at -3 ° C so far and all the components incl. The lenses worked the entire shoot over easily.

The electronic viewfinder is currently state-of-the-art and certainly one of the best in its class. But he pretends also like a better exposures ago when one actually gets later in the RAW converter to view. Unlike an optical viewfinder here habituation phase is longer.

Night Photography / long exposures
==============================

With the ability to couple the M1 with a tablet or smartphone (Android or iOS), long exposures, and bracketing are easy for later contrast compressions to accomplish. While others depending on your perspective laboriously roll my head to get a glimpse through the lenses, the M1 owner keeps just laid his tablet and get a real life preview of what is just exposed by the M1. This feature I really appreciate - especially in night scenes or scenes such as fireworks. The coupling works fine and it is most DSLR photographers through the Life-transmission of the scene ahead clearly, as you can appreciate much faster if the current exposure is his own request. Also can be the focal point for a series of shots in advance on the tablet (or phone) set so that there can be no subsequent defocus bracketing more. All in all really sensible features that I do not want to miss.

Available Light at high ISO values> 1600
==================================

... And right here now MFT separates from full-frame DSLR. From 1600 ISO, the differences in noise performance of M1 to eg a 5D Mark III are clearly visible. Through good reworking of RAWs can save a lot - but the 5D Mark III scores here clearly towards the M1. In really bad light and an ISO of 3200 or more I would always resort to a full frame camera, because the M1 really visible reaching its limits from 3200 ISO.

Configuration of M1
================

The M1 offers in the current firmware (V 2.2) a seemingly endless number of configuration options, so that you can adjust the key and Wahlradbelegung largely to his needs. However, caution is advised - who will change many default settings, should really be sure even days later to know what is where.

Touch display of M1
================

Yuck - a touch screen - something to use for quick snap kiddies. Far from it - I have scenes with the M1 at "eye level" div tracks photographed in Miniatur Wunderland only with the Touch Focus M1 ... and the impressively quick and sharp.. The camera triggers without delay to the touch of the screen - the focus operation gets not with you. For me, a rethinking has set in - because I do not want to miss this technique in the macro range or undetected possible street and scene photography.

Battery grip and battery life
======================

The battery grip is a must if you shoot a lot in portrait mode. However, only one battery fits into it. A second battery can be left in the battery compartment of the M1 - but you have to always unscrew the battery grip when using both batteries to recharge the left in the camera battery. For that reason I use only one battery in the M1 (the battery grip!) And then switch rather directly the battery from the handle. The battery life is approximately 350 shots and is not really exhilarating. Since the big sisters of Canon are also far superior. No matter - then you just take 2-3 more batteries with (good derivatives do it for far less money) and which should be sufficiently allow many shots. The handle gets the M1 a much better feel and act a bit more "adult".

Studio Sessions with the M1
====================

I have the M1 used in my studio - and if configured correctly (eg should be switched to the viewfinder so that fade-outs on the M1 does not lead to the darkening of the viewfinder), the pictures are qualitatively similar to a VF-camera - which ultimately is not surprising because I always use ISO 100, a Scan 1 / 200sec and correspondingly high aperture, the sharpness and noise performance are at optimal levels in the studio. Nevertheless, I like much better in the studio optical viewfinder VF-camera systems. This is certainly taste but I'm in the studio with classic DSLR cameras cope better - quite independent of the already described good results.

Summary
===============

High quality mirrorless system cameras are establishing themselves, in my view rightly increasingly on the market. The systems are significantly lighter at high light intensities, the contrast autofocus is very fast and is the phase autofocus systems in nothing after, making subsequent lens adjustments unnecessary. The diving display is used to - but reasonably usable even in the macro range or stereo photography. Face autofocus, wireless tablet control and extremely high-quality lenses complete the overall picture for semi-professionals and professionals from sense.

The M1 is losing clearly in the high ISO values against VF systems - just as it has been unsuccessful in the studio of my own personal view viewfinders because the assessment of the modeling of the scene, at least I find it easier with an optical viewfinder of a DSLR classic.

Nevertheless, the M1 increasingly established as my favorite camera due to the benefits outlined above. The M1 is a high quality camera that also for higher-priced contracts can be considered because of their multiple configuration options and the superb image quality, unless resolutions of 20 Megapixels or more are required. Unrestricted buy rating and 5 stars for a perfect camera.
