Reading this novel is essential for the understanding of the masterpiece of Kubrick. As always with Clarke, the basic idea is very interesting, but the style, the atmosphere, the characters are a little superficial: it is hard to focus.
However, the film, already good, becomes admirable when read the book: history and symbols make sense.
