Nintendo Wii U - console, Premium Pack, 32GB, Black - The Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker HD (console)

Customer Review

What has struck me in the many reviews, is that the WiiU is either praised to the skies ("Fanboys"?) Or is made totally down ("Hater"?). I want to try it different times. First of all: Yes, I find the WiiU class. But of course, not perfect as well.

*** WiiU console ***
The console looks great, is easy to handle but surprisingly heavy. A stand for upright-stand is, incidentally, also gummed like all stand in the package, you have to not be afraid it fall to something. The connections are puny, but that should not bother most. BUT: If you want to connect to a PC WiiU screen should watch: Video and audio are both channeled through the HDMI cable. That is, your screen can even no sound (no built-in speakers) and has no sound output can (eg for headphones) you bend it with the WiiU. Yes, you can the audio signal via an adapter disconnect, but that is expensive and does not always work that neatly. Yes, you can connect to the gamepad headphones, but at WindWakerHD the gamepad and the TV provides different sounds. Incidentally, you can also use when the TV is completely switched off the WiiU on the gamepad.

*** WiiU Gamepad - Windwaker-Edition ***
The gamepad is good. It fits comfortably in your hand and is easy. Battery also sufficient. The YXBA buttons are very loose in the socket, so the chattering constantly - how annoying what Nintendo has only thought. Otherwise the gamepad has a quality image. From the front, the gamepad is actually coated with piano lacquer - that leaves fingerprints, like it or not. In the right light looking out not so great, and you constantly cleaning after. From behind it is brushed pleasant. A charger for the battery is, and you can also put in the stand which the gamepad then in charge. Else is doing another stand without charging current - all are again gummed from the bottom and are bombproof. Very nice. The Zelda finish I find rather disturbing. Incidentally, it is * golden * (not just yellow) decorated, but in direct artificial light of a reading lamp looks more like plastic yellow. I think it bothers the otherwise clean clear design of the gamepad, but Well, me now brings it not to. The design is otherwise rather incidentally Mau - yet it goes, but it is waiting from me, in a few years we imagine "man sees from frumpy". Why? The screen has a large "margin", something that you try more and more to avoid in smartphones. Although the resolution is not a big hit, you might think, but there is a reason (apart from the obvious cost factor): When the console has to calculate 1080p, it has also to calculate the gamepad Output. The higher the resolution, the more the console must here make even incidentally. The image transfer to the gamepad (running a private WLAN) works amazingly well, without any delays, and you can also quickly replace the screen content. Madness, as a computer scientist I pleased this technique most: D.

*** Zelda - Windwaker ***
is download only title there. However, the download runs in the background while you for example gambles something else and something less than 2GB in size (NB .: For me there was no download error). To play you learn anywhere pretty much, I just want to touch on something: I've played the Gamecube version and is Zelda typically very worth playing (though a bit "childish" than many other Zelda)! Here are some improved: The gamepad shows the items you can choose her without a break, so much less gefrickel especially later in the game. In addition, the upper world-map when driving boat - very useful, of course, in dungeons in real time. The collected bottle you can access it. I found disappointing but the control of the telescope using the gyro sensor: It makes little sense to to turn around to look around with the game pad around its own axis, since the image is displayed on the television and not on the gamepad. For "fine tuning", it is ok, just what you need at the binoculars? Whether the gamepad comes with other items to use, I could not figure out. Then the bottle is a great feature. The constant (optional) accessibility from other players is a funny thing in NSMBU. You can also take pictures and send them via a bottle. Also "Selfies" link with the image are possible. Using a joystick, you can choose between different facial expressions even then. Finally, the new graphics are really cool - I have not seen any place with washed textures or so, everything is nice and sharp. In particular, the lighting effects are nicely done, also act not covered. Nintendo also has some moments of frustration once created and reworked hand. Some texts had of course be adapted to the WiiU (For example, the declaration of a bottle of Tingle). At the end of Nintendo has done everything right in this revision. Some complain, WW is too expensive, you have not done so much to it. I think Nintendo has followed a marketing rule: Quality products never sell cheap, because that harms the image of the brand. A WW for 15 would affect many buyers as a demo version (in particular, I am thinking of the inexperienced, as the parents of the youngest gamer generation). Lindt makes chocolate the way with his equally. I think the price is still falling fast, but never are really cheap. Anyway, an absolute must for every WiiU owner!

*** WiiU OS ***
The latest version (as of 10/2013) is still quite slow in changing the different services. But a little tip to all the know-alls out there by a software developer (that's me): My hot tip is that the OS is to use as little memory as possible. Everything is top of the OS, the games will be lost on power. Nintendo brings the right balance here outside - a sleek OS which has slow changes eg between shop and browser to cope - how often do you do that already in succession? The 7 sec. To cope with. But the alternatives would be more power (= higher price) or less power for the games left.
Otherwise, the OS is quite chic and convenient - I can imagine that it may annoy some, if one uses just no gamepad - the shop for example, uses only the gamepad. The home screen is also remote. Second screen of the gamepad is really widely used but not even the OS itself. The browser is surprisingly good and fast, can even browse, but the contents are the same on gamepad and TV basically. Too bad.

*** 5 for the online shop ***
Funny that I read here is not of. But in the clutter of Nintendo accounts (Mii, NintendoNetworkID, Nintendo Premium, Club Nintendo, er .... yes?) Goes down almost on that one p.nintendo.net for buying the WiiU Premium 500 points balance gets (is on a flyer enclosed with). Points are awarded at Club Nintendo also, to me is still not clear to what extent the different. But from 500 Pkten you can redeem I made yesterday and I actually get the money for the Nintendo Shop amounting to 5. Have a coupon. It is not much, but there are also some NES and SNES games for 4.99 in the shop, or you can save it just enough to buy one online titles such Windwaker or so. There are, incidentally, again these points if I am not mistaken ...

*** Hater and fanboys ***
In terms of hardware are most Amazon reviews (especially critical) full smattering of knowledge. The RAM is enough? Says who? For a Windows PC, yes. For a console? It depends. A user here has made the beautiful comparison, and said, "A tractor has more horsepower than a Porsche, it is therefore faster?". Familiar such nonsense does not, at the end include benchmarks and the experience of game developers. Surely that can not say no, but I guess the WiiU is something more powerful than the PS3 or XB360, but not really much. NextGen they will probably be removed quite far. The potential will be fully exploited but as always until the end of the console, as it is in all consoles. And most of all: It's not about here. Who wants to play Super Mario, do not do that because of the photorealistic (!!) graphics. Or Zelda. This is about quality of play. The prime example is WindWakerHD. It benefited from the 1080p and the new light effects, but it's still Celshading - it now looks more like it had then to look like when the Gamecube had just done. I am 27 years and been playing since I am a child and I throw the generic FPS slowly. Nintendo remains true to itself: quality, fun, family-friendly, creative. They can, they could always, it put them more and more. The times where Nintendo competed directly with Playstation are long gone. They also put on increased Casuals. What my friend probably thinks of CoD or BF? Nix. Therefore, PS and XB are not the same crap, just a different audience. But Super Mario plays more. I myself am more hardcore gamers with one leg in the Gamer pension. I been playing mainly on the PC, a platform that already surpasses now the NextGen consoles in terms of graphics performance, for the same or even a lower price. I have a WiiU because I want to play Zelda WW, SkywardSword and the next Zelda still unknown. And the Mario titles. And Mario Kart. And Pikmin. But watchdogs, and GTAV if it should come to the WiiU. But I am aware that this third party can hardly adapt their game to the gamepad. What appeals to me the price (students not having so thick) and backward compatibility, which I can catch up on the Wii classic that I had missed, and which are now also extremely cheap. And Zelda is pretty timeless. CoD probably less, right? Who says the WiiU would lame, has no idea of the target group of Nintendo belongs, not even at that, and usually has no idea of the technology. There are no games for WiiU? Yes, but they come slowly - how was that again 10 years ago with PS3 and XB360? Aha. And I prefer to save the money for a PS4 or XBOne? Uh no thanks, that I invest in an ordinary PC as in this Stasi machines.
The fanboys else do you need so nothing to say except that the WiiU is really perfect, 6 out of 5 stars and trallala. Some posts here are dripping with nostalgia and enthusiasm, but I really do not need me for a Lobeshymmnen WiiU decide I need an honest feedback, which will help me figure out if what is for me.

*** About me ***
Student, 27 years. Started playing solitaire on a 386 at the time, then an Amiga in elementary school, then NES, SNES and N64 then. The latter was for me ultimately up to a couple of great tracks (OOT, MM) a shot in the oven. The Gamecube was totally uninteresting to me. Since I played only on PC, already flirting with the Wii, but could not overcome me. Now with the WiiU I get the direct. PS and Xbox I never found great because most games can play (mouse + keyboard) on a PC in better graphics and with the input medium of my choice. But a few PS-exclusive titles I miss already tolerably :( Game Type:. Rather hardcore gamers with progressively less time to gamble Initially the Nintendo classic, then a lot of online FPS, then mainly OpenWorld titles as GTA and Elder Scrolls, otherwise almost exclusively. RPGs. But in general I can say with almost any game with a rating of 85% + no :).

*** CONCLUSION ***
Buy recommendation? That depends - you belong to the target group? Then yes! There are little things to complain about always. What bothers me most of the more far meager use of second-screens is (Nintendo Land times excluded). Finally, one has two raisons d'être for WiiU ever. One does not expect third party make the gamepad better (within the meaning of creative) than Nintendo itself. I hope there still is one or the other feature, as long as I let in 4 of 5 stars stand. The OS is good, processing well, AAA games are available in part and even more on the march, price is low - Check everything. What is, however, you should ensure that there is probably (as of 10/2013) should be several new bundles, ie, for example. A WiiU-Premium with New Super Mario Bros and Luigi Bros instead WindWakerHD. At the moment still rumor, but it is, but it should cost the same. Perhaps the more what's for you.
For whom the WiiU is what now, you could hopefully get a little reading of this review. Competition it has in any case not because PC, PS and XB are very different devices. Otherwise, have fun gamble! :)

--- UPDATE ---
Now, after a little play time, I would like to add a few things: In general, I am still very excited about the Wii U!
After I read that one or the other criticizes the battery life of the gamepad, I have to hold against: Fully charged enough, the estimated 3-4 hours. Mind you at a time and at full brightness; in the latter case, you can still bring some out. And who gambles still after 3-4 hours without a break, can sometimes hang the small charger cable, right?
Also, I've read that the Miiverse functions (ingame, not the app) are rather nonsensical. I think not. In fact, some contributions from players in New Super Mario Bros U, definitely terrible :) There are a lot of small children who are partly no spelling can: D. Insults, etc. you are looking for but to no avail, there are more posts like "level is doohf" - almost cute. But you already feels a bit in the wrong age group; D. In contrast Windwaker the bottle is great! Sure, at first each player has more nonsensical written, but now it use the player to take beautiful photos, to ask questions about the mystery or ("Hello Hello!") - And that's at best - to share photos with others. You can save the photos from the bottle, in the own camera, the link item. Who still knows Windwaker will be able to remember that you can give all sorts of pictures in the game at a person who collects them. By Players then particularly rare photos are shared, for example, from an opponent of the no longer after defeating be photographed. There is also much bottle in the sea and it's fun at the way across the seas to collect a few and watch what others are doing so, where they hang out, or whatever. Some also draw pictures using the stylus itself on the gamepad and send it. A nice feature!
One should be said for those who operate without the TV but with PC-Monitor: If you connect headphones to the screen (see the beginning of the review), although the sound is transmitted, but not of the gamepad. The düdelt happy to get out of their own speakers, what is even now wants to avoid. You can set the tone because of make, and also missed nothing - at the Windwaker are on the gamepad just "click" sounds when selecting etc. - but to gamble with headphones Wii U is somehow ... Half-cooked. Unless you listening solely on the gamepad (without large screen / TV), then everything is over ...
Finally, I would still say that Windwaker but uses the gamepad in great detail. Not only do you have on the screen all the cards (dungeon, world, treasure, Special cards) and the inventory also, the melodies of Windwakers be listed there, while you play. The destinations with Gamepad gyro is also used for the rope and the boomerang. The control is still a little getting used to, because you have to combine with the Joystick Gyro, but slowly I'm so hot - and do not like to give up the control gyros!
All in all Windwaker become great, and pulls me for the second time in its spell :) The Hero mode is initially incidentally sau difficult - not only that you can take double damage and not search the grass for the heart - there are * * no heart to recover, not even of pots or opponents. Especially in the beginning with 3 hearts and without healing potion you can hardly play through an entire dungeon to die without a few times. Before the final battle I had even deliberately kill, so I do not have to go in with a heart. I think the sets but still once you have more bottles + heart and is more flexible. Meanwhile, I've just switched to normal :).

The Zelda responsible Eiji Aonuma has meanwhile announced that is working on the ew Zelda Wii U Gamepad and the there is exploited "to the limit" - I'm curious: D.

--- UPDATE --- 2
So, it's a little time has passed, and I wanted to add a little something or other. I zocke still very much at the WiiU :)
The gameplay in Windwaker remained. Of course, one also controls the bow with the gyro sensor, like all first-person items also - and even if it was used to, the now running even under time pressure properly. The game itself is a little less long-winded in some places than it was in those days the original thanks to a couple of minor procedures. For me the best Zelda from the series, but probably the most appropriate for porting to the WiiU.

But on the Nintendo shop I had said anything: This is filling up with content off the age-old classics for Virtual Console. Some full-price titles such as New Super Luigi WiiU can be bought here - but there are not all (which actually remain at least the Nintendo games to download Nintendo Land, Wii Mario and -Zeldas ...?!) - And the prices are often stuck at Erstpreis of time, instead of being cheaper (you get on Amazon often cheaper). Nevertheless, there was recently a few days Specials for games of all categories where significant price reductions (20-50%) were in it! I would like to see more happy. As before, there's not much to see, because the games offer the WiiU slowly gets under way, such as. Soon with the promising Super Mario 3D World. A nice touch are the demos: Some games are offered as a demo in the store, which you can then download and allude - a beautiful thing. Man discovered but one or the other game, which not consider otherwise had (eg Trine). The operating system will hopefully finely adjusted again: For example, a loaded disc runs through without interruption, while still in WiiU main menu - no, that would be necessary. It rushes then also constantly to himself that could easily change. Practically, it would also be able to turn off the gamepad screen permanently all - NSMBU finally reflects just the TV content - this is then unnecessary and only needs electricity. And a bit of performance when switching between applications, you can also determine rauskitzeln even that would not hurt. But that is bleating at a high level and not something you necessarily need.
A chic thing is to be able to gamble without TV and the gamepad out - I did but then used the one time or another, although I would not have thought it. Whose resolution would have actually a ticking have been better, but, well, I think the price was as important to the Japanese. I have the gamepad even used a few times, a recipe from the Internet display in the kitchen - not a real selling point, but I thought it was funny;)
Oh, and you've probably already seen that my assumption has come true and now new WiiU bundles for example. Are with New Super Mario / Luigi Bros WiiU.

So there is not much new, so that will be the last update here. It remains to wait for arriving gradually, new games (like even more non-Nintendo) and a somewhat more extensive use of the gamepad would still be desirable (a wasted potential - Nintendo Land before machts) - so I think the 4/5 star rating quite appropriate. Fun is thus all :)

--- UPDATE --- 3
Plot twist! :) But still an update. Even for the second time, because Amazon has reset my update again :(
I forgave 4 of 5 stars because the gamepad was not fully exploited. Now I must say that I consider this 4 star finally justified. Even after some time we can say: Yes, it come the games, but they are almost all from Nintendo itself: Mario 3D World, DKC: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. Yes, watchdogs - 2014, there are some for WiiU on AAA titles. But even that takes something you developed indeed not happen overnight, but years.
Much more is found that the marketing of WiiU was bad. That was known for a long time, but slowly it seems to be stabilizing: the third party to play that very reason, the large customer crowds stay out, too. Nintendo President Iwata cares just more to the future console (s) in order to reassure the shareholders, and thus seems the WiiU himself a little to have failed to recognize. Quite annoying - there is general agreement that the big rush was not just the few release games, but also the fact that the mass of Wii owners thought the WiiU was a gamepad for the old Wii! And now slowly the drops seem to be sucked and it does not move much. I would be surprised but a sudden rise just because Nintendo's AAA titles in 2014 very.
But none of that interested me little. The Dreamcast was also ne great console, even if no one purchased. Those that they had also had fun with it. But what I notice that in Super Mario 3D World (a great game!) Little and not very creative the second screen is used. Certainly there is still one or the other Nintendo game, which is to do it differently (Zelda - even with notice). But for non-member producers of the train has left slowly, something to bring out as The Wonderful 101 from the creative workshop. This is one of the selling points of WiiU - and at the same time the marketing problem - just nice periphery. Unlike as with the Wii with motion control that is no longer a reason to buy.
And like I said, there is my fifth star only if that would be more improved.

Conclusion: The WiiU's great convince Nintendo titles. Once again you get especially qualitative, creative and quite expensive console from Nintendo, with almost all gambling games are also values of Nintendo. The rest you should not expect much. One can now evaluate how you want - I'm interested in third-party games anyway just on the edge (for I NEN PC). Many a will that be enough.
For me, the WiiU is more of a console that just because Nintendo makes fun and suits my needs - which will probably seek no great success thanks to more misguided marketing. But that's more the problem of Iwata and not mine :) I zock yet another round Mario 3D World: D ...

PS:
- How to read the comments, there is now to take the HDMI Output for the TV and at the same time to have an analog RCA audio output for your stereo system - read more in the Comments
(!) - If I have understood correctly, then you can now use the Wii mode complete without television (the gamepad handles everything: images, sound and IR tracking ()!)
- ZeldaU is well presented at E3 this year :)
