This comprehensive grammar (in English) has the merit of both clarify many facts of languages, but also to take into account written and oral use to give a living reflection of normative and not just English. Moreover, it tries to use a relatively simple grammatical vocabulary accessible to a user demanding but not necessarily expert in linguistics. A French-speaking novice no doubt prefer to rely on a more elementary grammar focusing on basic grammar (eg Grammar in action at Castella) but soon more comprehensive needs will be felt and this grammar will be a very good choice.
