First of all I want to mention that I am not a professional user, but the NAS operate as private users. Therefore this review is from the perspective of a private user!
For this purpose, it should be said that I privately Synology DS212j a've used the last 2 years.
The NAS comes securely packaged in a correspondingly large cardboard. I really liked that the board has a sturdy handle, so you can transport the quite heavy package safely. The NAS itself is securely packed and protected. This made a high impression. The hard drives plug already in the NAS and are not separately packed in carton.
Extremely surprised I was that the package included only a very sparse quick start guide, I find that cheeky in such a complex and expensive device.
Because with this handful of pictures on the folding instruction can truly not do much.
Anyone who spends so much money and then also has a device in front of him, which does not 'plug and play' work because you expect a printed manual.
So I have the first installation on the basis of some pictures and performs first charged me any instructions from the network.
FYI: The manual way, there is only in English. For me personally, no problem, but one or the other, it is disturbing to hire.
But then I have shaken his head in amazement positive.
The installation is extremely easy, quick and without any problems. Where I had for days rumstellen at my DS212j of parameters needed to match values with the DSL router, etc. all this is not necessary here.
This is truly a NAS where Plug and Play is true, absolutely amazing, I would have never expected, just because it's yes is a professional device.
As I said, initial set-up according to the Quickstart Guide and you've been in the NAS menu.
The menu is cluttered my opinion, very simply, clearly and in no way to get along immediately without instructions or manual reading.
I have created my desired folder, created the necessary users, permissions on the folders given my backup hard drive connected to the NAS and the files copied to the same folder of the NAS, DONE!
Then I added the Server folder on Windows and on my Mac and you could work with it, it's probably not really.
The transfer speeds, I have not measured, but I can say that I am absolutely satisfied subjectively and could find no long waits or slow transfer rates.
There is also for Mac and Windows and Android is also a WD app, with which you can also lock onto the NAS to manage folders, etc.
Next, I will again test the power consumption, which I think is also very important. Still I can provide details.
In the settings but you can choose enough options to save power.
The operating sound is pleasant even when the fan is running and in no way disturbing.
If the fan shuts down, you can hear actually nothing at all.
Conclusion: I am more than happy and completely surprised how easy the device was. For a small business is a very good choice. Due to the very high price and the alternatives available with 2 hard disks for home use, it is for home users actually does not make sense.
