From the Lunar Chronicles one knows Levana as evil queen with an ice cold heart. But how did it happen? Why it has become so? Has the answers "Fairest". You get to know the very young and naive Levana, as she falls in love for the first time and a little later already strikes a dark path. In the meantime, you will not believe what she was doing. And yet to get a reader not around, at least to understand it a touch wide.
Because this family has made to what it is Levana. The distant and apathetic parents. The Cruel Sister. And the expectations around them. To me, that no piece excused far their actions. Cruel, terrible and horrific acts. When we think, it is not worse, it is still a top. However, it can not somewhere else. And this helplessness compensated Levana later by power and oppression. Of course, always keeping in mind and strong faith, to do the best for their people.
What surprised me was how much you actually from these few 200 pages. You can learn so much not only about Levana, but also on their family and the Lunar people per se. As a reader, you guessed the problems of lack of resources and the harsh yields of its own population. The clearer one, why behaves the people in his own way politically in the other volumes. Just beautiful, I find that many supporting characters get more color and arrive a few "Aha" experiences. Therefore I think it is best if you turn the order and "Fairest" read only after "Cress".
Conclusion: I'm usually not the big fan of short stories in rows and holding it for almost superfluous. "Fairest", however, fits perfectly in the books and has its own value. One must not read, but can get a deep insight into the Lunar people through reading. Not only Levana taking shape, but the entire kingdom. In my eyes, for fans of the series 100% recommended!
