AF-D 2,8 / 24

Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm / 2.8D lens (52mm filter thread) (Electronics)

Customer Review

To close the gap between the 1.4 / 50 and 2.8 / 14, I bought a small 24er. Used for small format (also FX or "Full Format" called), ie D700 and F100. The corresponding zoom lenses are either too big / too heavy or have at 24mm an unsatisfactory image quality. Although my 2.8-4 / 24-85 is still reasonably easy to handle, but in the range of 24 - 28mm a significant wave distortion and a visibly warmer vote that may interfere in analogue photography entirely.
The AF-D 2,8 / 24 is neutral in color rendition, barrel distortion is quite visible depending on the subject, but not overly annoying, but maybe in architectural photography. At full aperture it shows how most classic wide-angle lenses from Nikon significant shading in the corners and a significant drop in the resolution towards the margins. For uniform picture quality should at least be stopped down to f5.6, ideally on f8. The Close-Range Correction (CRC Floating Elements) to worry about the whole setting of close and distant for good imaging performance.
Also in his other properties, it fits into the series of AF-D Weitwinkelnikkore: fast focusing, since the autofocus has to travel only a short distance. Closest focusing distance of 0.3m. Conventional rod autofocus, with the current entry-level cameras so focusing manually is announced. Classic aperture ring for use on older Nikon SLRs. Filter Size 52mm (non-rotating) is the same as many other Nikkorlinsen, high filter holders may be able to but be quite bothersome, with the red filter Nikon R60 for example, there are no problems. There is also a solid lens hood made of metal called HN-1, which is screwed into the filter thread. So you have again the choice of either filter or aperture. At least you can use the front cover even when screwed HN-1. The build quality is fine, outer plastic housing with internal metal frame and most likely course metal bayonet. It is supplied with front and rear lid, the lens hood is only accessory that must be purchased separately.

I now Schwanke between four and five stars. For a fixed focal length at F2.8 could already expect more quality. What do the expensive professional zoom at 24mm, I do not know, but they are much more difficult and I do not want this to drag blocks around, taking pictures is supposed to be a hobby for me and no job. The new AF-S 1,4 / 24 I leave here also outside. The opinions on the WWW this objective vary but very, but it seems to depend on the very purpose and the camera. Since the 2.8 / 24 with 270 grams is nice and light and small and therefore harmonize the two cameras above well without battery grip with it, it has evolved in a very short time to one of my favorite focal length. That's why I give it five stars, others may come to a different conclusion.
