Having navigated over several years with a TomTom Go 930 (and thus am very satisfied basically) was now again a map update on - the TomTom with 80 are visiting. Also, the battery started to weaken and the FWD speakerphone in my car gave up the ghost.
In brief: Replacement was needed. Since I am much traveling by car to give me a very good navigation system is very important. I was advised and the Garmin nüvi 3598LMT landed-D EU. On the whole, I can associate myself with the positive assessments of many speakers fully.
The core discipline navigation works very well. Satellites are found quickly and reliably, the voice ('Anna') is always loud enough, and the melodic bells, the strikes, if you exceed the speed limit, do not bother (me anyway). Annoying is already indication that the message, "construction on your route" is repeated every few minutes ;-) and the statement that when leaving the route once a recalculation so true only conditionally. I noticed anyway this morning on the way to work on that the original route has been preserved, although I took a wider and more comfortable to be traveled parallel street. (In the end, I came back to the calculated route, and I really can not be safe to say that the failure to recalculate more curse or a blessing is -. The www, I found complaints that too rapid recalculation is rather disturbing) traffic delays are accurately displayed and thanks TMCpro and DAB + also currently.
In terms of look and feel is in the appliance exposed to little. It is high-quality, the display is excellent, the fact that the unit base takes up the entire Kabelei that can then no longer have to touch that makes attaching the device to the windshield makes a tactile pleasure. Also contributes to the strong magnet that holds the device safely and even when docking results. The aluminum housing and the glass surface can be in fact a high quality mobile phone or a PDA to think - what is surely intended.
Very good solved the automatic brightness and volume adjustment. I would claim that 999 to 1,000 users visit never the menu item "Brightness and volume" in the settings because both automatic adjustment is set from the outset.
A weak point which struck me: the glass reflects very strong and if you, like me, wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, then you have to look pretty much perpendicular to the device. A reading "from the corner of my eye" as I could make it at TomTom is not possible, at least not with sunglasses. (We know this effect of the "Anti-Spy" films on notebook displays - in the final analysis, it means that I may have to attach the device to another location.)
Voice control is a very useful feature, which however does not work reliably when music is playing on the radio. I still have a little more work with it - I can confirm that, of course, that all the essential functions via voice commands are available.
The use of the device as a hands-free device is possible and thanks to the Voice Control also feasible, without taking your hands off the wheel. Exception: accept conversations or stop is not possible via voice command. I have not gained any very profound experience of using the device as FSE, but in normal driving conditions, the voice comes in acceptable quality and understandable to the opposite. When pairing the dataset is read in the iPhone and the phone book is available immediately. (Whether or not the addresses are available for navigation, I have not tried yet.)
Also in the sub-disciplines, the device collects so diligently points. The vehicle plug must be kept long enough to secure even in a DIN-socket contact (here I was forced at TomTom, resorting to a Hama power cord because the TomTom connector really only in cigarette lighters safe contact has). The cable is long enough to make even the sheeting at a greater distance from the power supply possible.
An unpleasant topic is the support. The acquisition of the "speed camera" -Zusatzdienstes requires install additional applications on the PC (POI Loader) and me is still not clear whether the relevant information may also be transported via DAB + or available only through the Smartphone Link app available. (Their latest version can be had only on iPhones with OS 6 and install higher - Bad luck for me because I will not do that to my iPhone 4, the new OS.) The purchase of additional services is certainly solved significantly better at TomTom.
For Equipment features: It's all there, what you need to operate, but also not a bit more. The fact that already during the initial loading of the card on the theme "insufficient memory" stumbles, is unattractive, though, after all, easy to dissolve (remove all voices that you do not need, etc.). Nevertheless, the question has to be whether one can offer in this price-performance category to a device whose memory is just enough. For future expansion makes the not bode well - the acquisition of an additional memory card is securely recommended, though not essential. Also disturbing I feel that is not supplied with at least one cloth bag in which you can pack the unit, if you want to take it. As I said, we are talking about a top device for which a special price is required.
Conclusion: (to have actually placed next to and now without a current peak TomTom) in the sum of its characteristics convinced me the Garmin. There are departures in the B-note - the highly reflective display, the lack of visibility with polarizing lenses, the scope of equipment for improvement and finally the somewhat unsatisfactory Web Support induce me to give only four out of five stars. But that's my individual vote - I think that whoever is looking for a perfect navigator with significant added value (speakerphone) which is well served here.
