Almost perfect compromise between image quality and compactness

Olympus PEN E-PM2 system camera (16 megapixels, 7.6 cm (3 inches) touch screen, image stabilized) Kit incl. 14-42mm Lens (Electronics)

Customer Review

... After I have currently are nearly all lower demanding Olympus model range with me (XZ-1 XZ-2 XZ-10, PM2) and the old PENs from P1 to PL3 pretty well know (but all already long sold again because indeed wonderful, but always too slow), can and I would like to report comparative to these devices.

Olympus has now really for every taste and every requirement a suitable and highly interesting camera in the program, I must say real time. Sorry, no, the everything so you again spoiled for choice is how I now. The PM2 stands between the two worlds and I think it brings together very skillfully, although it of course remains a compromise.

Compared to other cameras, the PM2 is aimed clearly at photographers who indeed attach great importance to the highest image quality and the image impression large sensors do not like to miss, but would rather rare times manually change. Anyone who needs constant, is happier with the larger pens and whosoever even more compact needs and a greater focal range bag fit this will have, the XZ-models (also my reviews of these s.), Since specifically the XZ-2 shall be closer view possesses all the creative possibilities of a large "camera.

But to put it bluntly: The picture quality of PM2 is the XZS despite their high level considering such a way that makes the class jump really noticeable. That was not so in the previous pen. (Eg just the PL3 has me totally disappointed with their effektheischenden contrast enhancement and the mediocre noise performance; which was and still is a wonderful camera old PL2 as one of the most successful pens but is now sensor technology finally completely afterwards regarding dynamics and noise performance)

But also in other areas, sets the PM2 from, especially the AF plays in terms of speed in a totally different league, not the small XZ's and certainly not the old PENs keep here with.

The PM2 in bullet points, as always entirely subjective my personal opinion:

LOB:

+ Really absolutely superior image quality, the first time no, really no more desires remain open for me, even in dim light

+ AF is so fast that you as a veteran Penler initially been startled at the first trigger

+ ... And even still in Wohnzimmerdämmerlicht where the little sisters XZ-10 and anyway have actually already older XZ-2 problems or fail completely, ditto the old PENs

+ Noise performance at the highest level, almost comparable Sony NEX5N, much better than my previous Sony SLTs with large APS-C sensor; ISO 1600 is almost no loss, for small prints can be the isoschraube high drehn until the doctor comes

+ Night vision goggles - image display is greatly lightened, without Gegriesel

+ Trigger on the touch screen, just tap what you want to have sharp clack snap ready without tedious and prefocusing rüberziehen for schnappschußwütige Papis (and clear, even mommies) a blessing, but also when the subject is off-center focus helpful (Photography)

+ Thus almost the perfect family clippers - the first time I get my little ones racing fleas also indoor on the picture (ok most), outside anyway absolute snapshot capability. And yes, I really mean it - as much as I demanding Scan - a really good camera must for me also can, and here the wheat from the chaff separates very quickly.

+ Tiny dimensions of both the camera and the lenses; even the 40-150 zoom works like a toy, the little Kitzoom you lose already in your pocket. In addition to my old, even more petite Nikon D40 SLR with 55-200 PEN works with 45-150 as my smart addition to a US-Pickup. Even the great "14-150er Zoom is still a tiny and featherweight part compared to corresponding SLR lenses or even the direct MFT Panasonic equivalent. The PM2 you can actually almost always have without the slightest loss of BQ or speed. One has already vastly larger and significantly more expensive SLRs and lenses especially appropriate to mount up even to gain real advantages as; only sports shooters (with the gun barrel big white Riesenklötern on the sidelines), it will probably have to continue to do so.

+ Coherent operating concept if you want to rarely play around manually; but even that goes, just not nearly as flutschig as XZ-2 / larger PEN models. The touchscreen works fine and can be adjusted according to personal taste, the menu items will only be selected and then adjusted mechanically via thumbwheel. The configurability is slaying for PEN newcomers, but Olympians find at home immediately.

+ Automatic works well and can apparently read minds; to very good working facial recognition, even in dim light, is focused on more eye - perfect. Beginners will take a long time to achieve better results than manually hereby professionals have been really trying their skills, at least in standard situations.

+ ART-filter back all this, partly personally configurable and combinable. For some balderdash, for Andren (me) the creative fulfillment. In particular, the very grainy monochrome filter create beautiful photographs of time wistfully rapt effect, a great combination for this is the Lenscap of Olympus.

+ A small, quite usable for small tasks good extra flash in the size of a matchbox is supplied; in that it is not integrated into the housing, could selbiges smaller in size - in my view a good decision by the designers because mostly you do not need him, too. If you do, be easily assembled or put in your pocket. A cute Transport bag for the flash is provided.

+ Price hammer. Little more expensive than good noble Compact, (and also much bigger than this), and still cheaper than most entry-level SLRs, but much better, especially with regard to the kit lens.

+ Very good kit zoom. Clear not perfect, but far better than many SLR cucumbers which are supplied even when high-priced devices. The two kit-zooms are tiny and light as a feather, have a lightning-fast and silent AF and offer very decent to excellent optical performance. Who needs more can dig to their hearts content in the meantime huge lens program MFT manufacturer.

+ Over the expensive precious compact system cameras have a huge advantage: Goes down by Faller etc but even a glass broken, do you get for partly double-digit euro amounts used spare. A compact is economically most scrap. For this offer many times -as the XZ's- lenses, the system cameras can only dream of their data and qualities.

+ Wide range of accessories of first-class lenses via electronic viewfinder as the favorable VF3 to flashguns etc. Sony NEX and certainly the mirrorless Samsunicanons can not keep up by far.

MINT:

- For many a probably already too small - test better beforehand whether the paws rather need a P5.

- Especially with the larger zooms running pretty hard, the PM2 is simply too small and too ungriffig in to allow easy operation. Stimmig it is for the small, much lighter running 14-42 Kitzoom, and I think the whole concept is also intended more for little-objective changer and this lens and then also harmony. For most snapshots and leisure travel, the small zoom ranges also ideal, small magnifications (= Digital Zoom) as a temporary solution for smaller deductions allowed the high resolution sensor well within certain limits.

- Display as almost all LCDs useless in bright sunlight. Since an electronic viewfinder makes sense, especially since it is relatively cheap and will be absolutely useful (VF-3). Will possibly even set it to me yet, I have no experience with this.

- A few buttons and wheel are so willed consciously concept in the PM2, but at least aperture / shutter speed should be adjusted in the corresponding modes directly via thumb wheel; to enable that on the rocker only then can adjust annoying.

- The same applies to the sluggish switch modes, this is here only possible via touch screen; who often need, is it wish the mere larger PL5 with the usual mode dial and appearance. This is a point on the PM2 of the most annoying me (much more there is anyway not).

- The stability via a moving sensor is not bad, but it can at least still not keep up in my PM2 with good optical solutions, the sensor cleaning "by the Sensorgeschüttel is for fine dust balls and genuine dust just marketing Quark ineffective Therefore but the lenses remain small and. easy, and there are stabilized via sensor stability all docked glasses, find themselves historic manual baby via the adapter to the PENs connection.

CONCLUSION:

In speed and perfect BQ Family Children Cat Dog clippers, and equally great, extremely compact complement to large SLR for photographers who want to make no compromises in BQ and image effect in spite of being compact. (As in the XZS at least in the latter unfortunately necessary). Nevertheless does not impact on all possibilities regarding lenses and manual settings, when quite obviously not intended and also made it in to the larger Ggensatz PEN models.

Strong 4 stars, a half I draw from for the full package with the large zoom, which you can hardly operate without a case Camera slips out of his hands, and for the cumbersome operation in O / S mode, even if the fact not part of the concept. For both reasons, I liebäugel out already with the PL-5 ... but that makes the PM2 no worse. Just a great part of fabulous images - which one also makes because it is just too often have this camera with me as an SLR Klöter.

PS: of course it is perfectly legitimate, devaluate a review, if it has not fallen one; then would be a comment with a hint of what was missing in it, but not just a matter of decency, but also with other readers quite helpful, because then the author can make improvements. To a stalker who followed me since my negative Sony RX100-review, I'll probably never going; not bad, but other readers like this great forum might like to continue meaningful life into rather than just anonymous unload their personal problems.
