Some reviewers have traveled written that there actually is a plastic box, but it helps a lot! What I like are the well-fitting, yet easily removable lid and the well-crafted rubber at the "feet" - stable and secure. I use the little box for my WD external hard drives. They are stored safely there, I come off easily and does not have to fully provide the desk with it. My desire would be a broader box for larger plates with all their plug and power supplies salad!
