Cellular (Paperback)

Customer Review

Released in America under the title "Cell", this book is a lightweight format for King: only 400 pages! It is dedicated to Richard Matheson and George Romero. Regarding the first, I like to imagine that it is for his excellent "I Am Legend" (1954). For the second, I guess they do not need to specify ... besides the main movie and the last of Snyder, are mentioned in history.

The object is divided into nine parts, oscillating between 30 and 70 pages each, and etdébute: suddenly, the mere use of a mobile phone user metamorphosis into a homicidal lunatic. The police is overwhelmed within hours and sane survivors must leave quickly megacities in chaos. There are the "28 days later", from "The plane of the Apocalypse" and "Resident Evil Outbreak" in this novel. But do not mistake, and your story are original!

The aesthetics of the novel borrows undead films by descriptions of what happened to humanity. It is not quite that kind of creatures as they have not gone through clinical death, but rather insane, mentally processed to humans; King managed to mix a modern fear, that of all-computer, to the more ancestral possession (in the sense of the term voodoo). References to the Romero films and that of Snyder are discrete but present, and the author is also sometimes closer to "Land of the dead" by the concept of a new "humanity" could replace ours certainly _ ultimate terror, in my opinion.

King of regular readers know that he often had problems with the outcomes of his books _ to believe that her imagination leads her into so many directions at once he no longer knows how to reconnect at the very end: remember you the "Scourge", released in 1978 on the theme of bacteriological warfare, which harbored enormous potential but the last chapters, completely stripped, did sink into a pathetic anything ... This one escapes but not at this through a different way: instead of getting entangled in dozens of unnecessary pages, King made this time as Alexander the Great with the Gordian knot, that is to say, he ruled Net wire story which suddenly finds himself with a somewhat abrupt end, seeming even call a second volume (the 400 "missing" pages?). The answer to the fundamental question _ how? _ Is downright retracted, but ultimately it does no more than discomfort in the Romero movies or Snyder: the atmosphere is involved, the main!

In conclusion, if I put 5 stars to this work, it is not because it is exceptional but because it is in the middle of most of the other works of King, with the qualities and ordinary defects and that's how we like; Note, however, that since "Roadmaster" he returned increasingly to the fantastic _ and that's good!
