Originally published in the late 70s at a time when it was still possible to find and interview many survivors of Bomber Command RAF, this book is a major contribution to the understanding of the British bombing campaign on Europe (mainly Germany). The case of "Bomber" (or "Butcher") Harris is studied in detail and his stubborn character, his inability to hear his subordinates and his blindness as to the actual results of the British bombing. Competition with the USAAF is well described, the latter understood it was more effective to destroy the sources of synthetic fuel instead of incinerating hundreds of thousands of German civilians .... A very highly recommended book and do not constitute a hymn to Bomber Command although it pays tribute to the courage of the crews whose survival rate was particularly low.
