Silent for my PC I was looking for a replacement for my Samsung HD105SI that had annoyed me with a high frequency operating noise. In addition to an SSD as a system drive, it should serve as a storage for my frequently needed data (music, documents, pictures collection) and as a system back-up. So Pure performance was not the main focus, but low-vibration running as possible, low temperatures and low volume.
After I had worked my way a bit through forums, tests and price comparisons, the candidate was clear to me: Western Digital WD10EZRX. The HDD comes out with only one platter (magnetic disk) and two read heads. It is thus very easily which is equivalent notice when unpacking. Because the engine has only one disk drive, it comes with very little energy (according to the manufacturer 0.4W standby, 2.1 W idle; 3.6 W Full-Stroke).
I have been struck in this panel was the volume. In a system with 2 fans (1xCPU, 1x Case @ 700 U / min) I hear they neither idle nor when accessing. I had to put in HD Tune my ear to the case, to hear the hits during random access. In a Vibe Fixer hanging definitely not hear out of the system!
The temperature at 20 ° C in the room settles down with me without active ventilation at about 27 ° C., after 2.5 hours formatting it was 33 ° C.
As mentioned, the plate is with me as a data grave without entitlement to maximum performance. However, I must say that it reaches very high transfer rates on SATA III controller (see screen to HD Tune). The access times are for plates this RPM range (ca. 5400 U / min) average, neither particularly good nor bad. This makes is usually noticeable when one folder with many small files opens (pictures, MP3). For me, the move but everything in the frame.
I have over the years a number of hard disks of all major manufacturer for various areas (performance, back-up, 24/7-operation) used and must say that this HDD is the best data plate is that I have ever built. There are for me what volume, smoothness and temperature in comparison to the performance in terms currently no better choice (of SSDs for higher price apart).
