The following review is from the first (lighter), I bought YN-160:
I bought this lamp to a universal light (head light, tripod light) with high intensity to have. The primary targeted application was actually doing. As a fill on the camera, but the lamp is not suitable at least in the default configuration rather The light of the lamp is very hard, cold and glaring. Even the built-in dimmer levels since little helps. The Orange filter to get artificial light (2700K) pretty close, but it's not quite true. Processing of light can be described as good, the setting of the inclination angle is possible, but with difficulty. This requires that you solve the corresponding Schaube very far, otherwise this can not accomplish due to continuous mechanics.
Positives:
* High brightness and wide throw
* Uniform illumination
* 1x Blur and 3x Konversionsfilter
* Hotshoe mountable
* Table Stand by Stand
* Tripod mountable (on handle)
* Handle for operation as a flashlight
* Using conversion filters possible
* Operating with 6xR3 or div. Camcorder batteries possible (eg SONY NP-F series)
* Light weight
* Low price
* Reflector covers
Negatives:
* The light of this light is "hard as a board"
* Dimming only possible in stages
* Dimmer "forgets" when you turn off the set brightness!
* The response to the +/- buttons for dimming is quite slow
* It which brightness level is set it is not visible or if the minimum / maximum has already been reached
* The minimum brightness is still too bright.
A use as diffuse head light to eliminate shadows only is not possible. Furthermore, the folding reflectors produce ugly light strip (washboard "light echoes") if you will use them to concentration of the light cone. If you fold even further to the Flügeltoore, the result is a veritable light grid.
From the enclosed conversion filters just the diffuser and orange filters are actually useful. The Pink filter produces a "piggy-colored" light (no idea what that is supposed to be good). The meaning of the blue filter closes me completely - because this really only in artificial light (incandescent) make sense to produce cold light. The light from the LEDs is but anyway cold - so far this filter has absolutely no erschichtlichen benefits.
However, the better Blur or by using professional conversion filter films (LEE filters) suitable correction filter can be other filter itself tinker manufacture.
As head light for short distances, the light is so definitely unfit - at least indoors at low artificial light level because they can not turn down far enough. For medium distances, it is (with proper filter film!) Very well applicable.
Tip: By using a filter film by LEE (Lee Filter # 206: "Quarter CT Orange") you get a very nice, pleasant 4-clock in the afternoon light - provided you a YN-160 has randomly caught from the right series ...
