The FZ1000 was meant for me as a test, possibly coming to transition to something sensible on the market.
I shoot for about 40 years and has long been digital from the Canon 300D (who she still knows me), 20D, 30D, 40D, 450D, 5D, 7D, Nikon D300, D90, D700, Sony A77, Nex7 / 6 plus various accessories of lenses etc ..
Over the years, decreased my motivation, all the stuff with me lugging increasingly, the equipment remained more often at home. Only the Nexen Sony could change this situation. Unfortunately, even these, with appropriate lenses, no longer really compact and appropriate telephoto lenses make the camera handling with the NEX also not really good.
That's why I had the Sony RX10 in sight, which was not good for me in the hand and was too short for my needs at the telephoto end.
The Panasonic FZ1000 was recommended to me by a friend and I have my camera bought for testing, without great expectations.
Two things are immediately caught my eye, the camera can be operated intuitively and feel could be improved, not bad but not very good either.
Housing / menu / viewfinder
Compact is this bridge now truly not, with the possible zoom range of 25-400mm that goes but still okay.
The button layout is reasonable, 5 assignable buttons, two rotating wheels, which leaves little to be desired.
The dial back has a Shift / selection function when pressed we will, another function called or confirmed, which I find a good solution.
This is my first Panasonic and I have to say that fits. The menu structure is logical, have rarely looking as little menu.
The camera does when preconfigured, also very good with only one hand.
The viewfinder is certainly a highlight of FZ1000, clear, fast, pleasant and large so great that one can hardly look at him overall. Unfortunately, with slight distortion at the edges, here Panasonic seems to have saved some of the conversion lens. Nevertheless, I use the viewfinder again mainly that I had largely given up on the NEX. The display is good, bright enough, especially enough for outside in the sun.
Image Quality
After the first tests, with little light and free hand, the first surprise. The small 1 sensor, which I had little credited, generates less noise than feared. Even more impressed the imaging performance of the Leica lens, even at full aperture throughout the range.
It provides BFailure 400mm f4 sharp images and can thus without limitation (Fade Out) are used, which was the next surprise. Teleobjetive lose the rear end almost always and often have to mind. A two levels are dimmed. In addition to the highly effective 5-axis stabilizer of Panasonic.
As you come already scratching their heads, playing the acquisition price of interchangeable lenses in this league.
AVL-photographer with portrait ambitions are, to be sure better off with a DSLR / System camera and correspondingly high-intensity FB.
Overall, and that's surprising to me that many FZ1000 Body / lens combinations, especially super zooms, in nothing is to, or exceeds this clearly.
The JPG engine Panasonic produces OOC good to very good, dynamic images. RAW Again increases the possibilities a little more out in critical areas (lights / shadows).
Operation / speed
AF and general handling
If the old adage, Speed is not magic applies to a camera, then secure on the FZ1000. Sub-second Ready to fire when turned off. AF-S focus throughout the entire zoom range (25-400mm), practically without delay. At first I thought it would often not focused.
Overall, the camera will answer every keystroke without delay. The menu runs smoothly when I'm thinking of Sony. The Verarbeitungsgeschwindigkeit- eg from 150 frames (full resolution) (timelapse) create a 4K video, less than a minute.
12 frames / sec. are not to be despised. In short, the rate is already close to perfect.
Counting the ways in the video area, 4K, timelapse, super slow motion 120 frames / sec. etc. to have come to a bit of suspicion, the Panasonic wanted to put the FZ1000 a brand, well above their price range also.
If not, well, then in any case is a camera on the market, the poaching in many areas.

With 830gr the FZ1000 is no lightweight when I then 100-400 plus normal lens thinking about the weight of example 7D with Canon, and the other manufacturers, 830gr are almost back to light as a feather.
