The year before, I had only a compact camera (IXUS 70 from Canon), which produced very good pictures in good light conditions. The disadvantage of this compact camera was the lack of adjustment options such as changing the depth of field through the aperture and shutter speed can be poorly controlled. Furthermore, any compact camera comes in low light conditions to their limits (and this will not change in the future, because the sensor is much smaller.). Whether that photos in churches or in rooms ... are the pictures were almost always useless or would you need to use a tripod.
With the Canon 1000D, I can now shoot photos also useful in a darker environment, I can make my photos creative and am more flexible in terms of focal length (wide angle or telephoto lens used). So it's a buy rating for the people who already own a compact camera, know what you want to photograph and are only just met with the compact camera to the limits of possibility. Those who have never had a camera, I would not advise immediately go into the league of SLR, since one does not know whether one really needs all the settings, or if you would rather just will automatically get good photos without prior knowledge.
For the latter reaches a "simple" compact camera completely out. A DSLR like the Canon 1000D to operate in automatic mode is frankly "pearls before swine" and one should rather background information (for beginners: Do not worry so complicated that again is not) learn about the camera.
Also, the word beginner's camera, which I was allowed to read here many times, a bit misleading. Only the price is interesting for beginners ... the operation is not much different than a comparably more expensive Canon DSLR, such as the 550D. A 550D can not (apart from the video function) as a 1000D, it is only "better" in the same functions (AF, sensor, speed). Who do not believe me, who can be so easy times the manuals of the 1000D and the 550D (or 500D, 450D) look and you will find that the difference in operation is rather low. A 550D is so for beginners as well (or poorly) suitable as a 1000D, when viewed only from the perspective of usability.
Anyone who wants to better pictures, should anyway concentrate more on the lenses because there performance differences are more noticeable than with the bodysuits. I have to replace the 18-55mm kit lens Canon (without IS) the Tamron 17-50mm bought (without image stabilization) and am very satisfied with this combination.
So whoever saves the Body and the money invested in ordinary lenses, will shoot better pictures at the end. It's that simple ... A better reason to buy the Canon 1000D, I can not also supply. :)
