Denon AVR-X1000 5.1 surround AV receiver (Internet radio, HDMI, DLNA streaming, AirPlay, 145 Watt) (Electronics)

Customer Review

Understanding the purchase of a modern AV receiver:

There are many reasons, trade in an old AV receiver against a modern instrument of current vintages. In addition to the expanded HDMI specification that can process 3D signals not only, but also provides CEC (control all devices connected via HDMI), mainly offer the modern room analysis systems, without hardly a modern AVR comes on the market, a significant improvement in sound. This room analysis systems now represent almost the "heart" of current AV receiver and are therefore mainly responsible for how the device sounds in your own home. Many space problems are detected and eliminated mainly in 5.1 or 7.1 systems, especially in the bass range, so watch the movies or listening to music almost learns a new dimension.

Particular attention should be paid to the offered connection options you also, because fundamentally different just here many devices. Some bring the full range of facilities, others are castrated to the absolute essentials.

My situation presents itself so that I Sonicate a 40m² room with a 5.1 system, which I both watching movies, especially the high-quality listening to music but which is important. My film and music collection is now largely in the network, so streaming is an important aspect for me.

As speakers come with me 2x Piega P2 compact speaker for the front, 1x Canton CM7 as Center, 2x Piega LDS 1.5 Rears as well as a Jamo Sub 660 as an active subwoofer is used.

To test the film sound I have used the following films:

- The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship (Introduction)
- Krabat (Introduction)
- Batman - The Dark Knight (bank robbery)
- Master and Commander (Battle at the beginning of the film)
- Pirates of the Caribbean II - Dead Man's Chest (opening scene)

To test the musicality and the streaming capabilities of the label "Stockfish Records" as well as FLAC 96kHz multichannel WAVs with DTS sound came and others. Various high-definition productions used. An audio formats all receivers MP3, WAV could (stereo) and FLAC (44.1 and 96kHz) play smoothly. Multi-channel audio in the form of WAV (DTS) dominated solely the Denon X1000. The playback of video material mastered none of the built-in media player.

The room analysis systems:

All candidates except for the Pioneer come with the Audyssey MultEQ XT room analysis system incl. Matching measurement microphone into the house, which performs an area measuring a total of 8 points (although you can also measure less points, but, for a better result at best the full 8 Measurements). One can thus thus calibrating an entire listening area, for example, the whole bed width and depth.

If you start the automatic calibration, sound sequentially from all speakers called. Sweeps through in a short time once the complete displayable frequency range. Based on this measurement is determined which frequencies to which maturity in what strength at the measurement point arrive. This automatically result in distance and frequency spectrum of each speaker to the listening position, as well as unwanted frequency increases and cancellations (so-called. Room modes) of the listening room.

As a result, each speaker now against each other with a time delay so that the listening position all sound sources at the same time arrive (Time Base Corrector), which makes perfect sense when you consider that probably all the speakers exactly equidistant are from the listening position only in exceptional cases.

In addition, the so-called. Spatial modes (frequency ranges, which are due to the room acoustics particularly strongly emphasized and thus reproduced too loud) is moved by means of an equalizer to the body by these frequencies are attenuated. This results in just the bass range a much clean sound because so ringing and droning successfully counteracted. This impression is confirmed by the subsequent audition.

The dynamic volume control you should disable the way necessarily, but it has an audible pumping volume within a piece of music to follow. Here's apparently only a simple compressor (not even a multiband compressor) is used, which attempts to keep the music at a consistent output level. In my opinion, this feature is thoroughly failed.

Pioneer, however, is based on the in-house room analysis Advanced MCACC system, which although only allows a single measuring point, but emits a much broader range of measurement signals, so among other things, signals to measure the impulse response. The operation is identical to the Audyssey system, ie there are corrections to the frequency response of each channel and a time alignment performed substantially.

Denon X1000 :: Denon AVR-X1000 5.1 surround AV receiver (Internet radio, HDMI, DLNA streaming, AirPlay, 145 watt) black

The X1000 is a pure 5.1 receiver as the only candidate, and also comes complete with no video section. The former can get over when one anyway only a 5.1 system requires, the latter can get over yourself when you are already in possession of a Blu-ray player that has this video Aufpolierer aboard.

My old AV Receiver Harman Kardon AVR 3550 went his time (2002-2003) for proud 699, - Euro (RRP) over the counter and was one of the representatives audiophilsten its price range. So I was very excited (and frankly not really confident) it with a new unit of 400, - to be able to replace worthy Euro price class.

The Denon X1000 came after 2 days safely at my home, and when I released him from his board, once again dawned on me evil, he was significantly smaller and lighter than my old receiver. This matchbox of amplifier should actually 145 watts per channel stuck?!?

My second impression was a purely optical: The X1000 looks - I beg your pardon for the harsh words - pretty cheap from. Everything is made of black plastic, which looks more like a remote control, which you would expect as an accessory for an Aldi-TV, and the back is not exactly abundant equipped with connections. Most importantly, the area underneath the large and well-resolution displays looks very cheap: a large plastic surface, over its entire width sporadic acting all 4 connection sockets are distributed. A hinged cover would have helped here clearly a higher optical quality.

The connection to the TV went off without a problem. Switched hardly, I was already instructed foolproof as I best set up my speakers and would be connected to the Denon. When connecting the speakers, I was pleasantly surprised how straightforward it can go to connect ten speakers stripping overhead at the back of the device (optional plugs when banana plugs available, or screws, if only the bare wire is present), as long as its connectors next to each other instead of the usual pairs are superimposed. Very relaxing.

Next, the calibration of the speaker followed by the Audyssey MultEQ XT program together with the enclosed measuring microphone. The result of the calibration has me really puzzled: The speaker distance for each measurement point were determined absolutely accurately to the centimeter (yes, I have actually measured it by hand), and even the position of the subwoofer was determined entirely correct. Accordingly, the calibration system also fits equal the respective delays in order to compensate for the different lengths of sound paths for the listening point - and it is the subwoofer extremely successful equalized (!). In other words: All disturbing resonances of unwanted spatial modes were perfectly eliminated, yet the bass signal remained clean. The Audyssey filters seem so extremely narrow working and clean.

At first I thought the Denon would hardly spend bass until I had myself, accustomed to the lack of resonating cabinets and room resonances that aufdickten unnatural bass before. The result was absolutely excellent: Clean, abysmal bass without droning, flutter or follow up on.

What I want to generally pass on sound the same. It is not clear to me how much of the sound of the Denon has the perfect calibration of the speaker and which is due to the actual sound quality of the X1000. But the result is the following: My speakers sounded suddenly, as if someone had pulled aside a thick curtain in front of them. The space has grown noticeably, the fine resolution has gained, the signal depth is an entirely different than before - in the positive sense. As I said, the Harman Kardon was also already audiophil breathed - and I really been satisfied with his sound. That had changed abruptly with the small Denon.

It's incredibly fun with the X1000 listening to good music. Both in stereo mode and in Dolby Surround. Because the algorithms of the Dolby system seem to have learned a lot. When Harman Kardon when listening to stereo music in Dolby Surround always a drop in the bass was noticing. In addition, strong Filterunsauberkeiten and phase obscenities fell on who made the music in general opaque and muddy. When Denon is all this nothing more to feel. Dolby Surround sound as dynamic, by distinguished and powerful as pure stereo mode. Before that I prefer smooth my hat.

Also in the film industry puts on it the X1000 a proper shovel fine resolution. In the first part of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, you should definitely look at once the history of the struggle against Sauron to (or speakers) to compare with one another receiver. That the narrative voice of Galadriel constantly changing position, depth in the room and the reverb, is me before never really noticed. The Denon draws here a rich diversity, which is truly amazing: The voice dissolves the center speaker, wanders between the front channels back and forth, comes into the room, turns back towards the rear, sometimes sounds dry and straight, and times weightless.

The performance is right at Denon. He makes a lot of pressure, but without ever the Output muddying to a pulp. Clean sound I can the Denon - especially considering its price - write not less than a thick one into booklets.

But now to my points of criticism:
The great advantage of the already mentioned Einmesssystems Audyssey MultEQ XT is also its biggest drawback: It works almost perfectly, whose apparently also the manufacturer is aware. Because if you use Audyssey, no manual intervention in the sound more is now possible. It can not even quite banal readjust ups and downs. Only the volume of the respective channels incl. The subs are readjusted manually. If you want to lend a hand to the sound, you have to completely renounce the use of Audyssey filter.

Another point of criticism in this regard goes to the dynamic volume adjustment. If this is activated, the X1000 also sounds at low volumes significantly stronger and nobler. If you look at this effect, however, a closer look at, to get the almost same sound experience when simply increasing the volume by about 6-9 dB. Behind this dynamic volume adjustment, which can be adjusted in three stages by the way, is a simple compressor that emerged together all audio volume moderate hides (because it is the dynamic range in the basement) and subsequently increased the overall level. So it all sounds louder, fuller and fuller. The problem here is that the compressor is very clean. You can put it in certain songs regularly "pump" hear about when a piece with a tender voice starts to the then joins a deep bass. In the moment in which begins the bass, the bass Laustärkeenergie be measured by the compressor and shut down the volume of the other instruments. The voice is so abruptly silent. This effect occurs on the way even at the lightest setting. I therefore have to disable dynamic volume control completely.

A third point of criticism is the built-in Denon X1000 Media Player, which can play audio from the NAS directly. To this end, the Denon offers a refreshing compressed MP3 files, which actually works well: There will be more and more bass presence commanded when the file is originally. What significantly reduces the Media Player, is the lack of ability to "spool" in audio files to. One can not at a particular point in a song: jump, but can listen to a track only from start to finish (or worse one audiobook chapter). For me incomprehensible; can the media player in my LG TV much better. This criticism, however, is open to all candidates surveyed by me, all of which can not in coils streamed audio files as well, which is completely incomprehensible to me.

As annoying lowest point when X1000 is certainly the inertia of the remote call. The X1000 is lagging the input to the FB constantly a bit behind what particularly disturbing impacted while browsing multiple folders on the network. Incorrect operation due to lame reaction of the receiver came with me regularly.

Otherwise, the X1000 works cleanly and reliably, also via HDMI CEC was working fine with me.

Since the bottom line for me personally, however, the sound quality has top priority (far away from any comfort or great additional features), I draw from only one star for these shortcomings. Because the sound is for this price range (and maybe even for the overlying) simply the (audiophile) Hammer!

Denon AVR 2113 :: Denon AVR 2113 7.1 AV Receiver (6 HDMI with 3D, 4K, Airplay, Spotify, internet radio, network, USB, 7x 125W) black

From 2012, but a class larger than the X1000, the Denon AVR 2113 comes but unlike the current X1000 he has a complete video section, and brings into the bargain a number of additional connections with. In addition, he now has, in contrast to X1000 to 7.1 receivers. He is only slightly more expensive with currently approximately EUR 390.00, but this is balanced with a huge amount of more equipment.

Also, the AVR 2113 is delivered with the Audyssey MultEQ XT room analysis system. Contrary to the statement on the Denon website to let but here - in spite of latest firmware - only 6 of the 8 measuring points to address. No idea why. The result of measurement may, however, for quite impressive: It's actually no difference to the X1000 audible. Sonically, the AVR 2113 to the X1000 expresses similar, but it seems he once again adult to sound a bit: He revealed a few more details, and speaks mainly the subwoofer still a little cleaner on. However, this could also be due to the slightly different calibration, although here would actually have been expected on the contrary, that all sounds a bit messy.

The delays of the remote control of the X1000 are not present when the AVR 2113, but the entire Firmware seems a bit messy as the X1000 to run (for example, elicited DTS audio files the 2113 only digital noise).

Otherwise, the two models are in many points identical: The user interfaces are alike as peas in a pod, the sound character is absolutely identical (even if the AVR 2113 seems felt purely subjectively to make things a bit better), and the appearance is almost identical. The AVR 2113 has on the front page but on a component input that is missing at the X1000.

Compared to the current X1000 you get the AVR 2113 for a little more money, a whole range of video features such as upscaling, filters etc. as well as more connections - and 2 amplifiers more.

Pioneer VSX-923 Pioneer VSX-923 :: S-7.2 AV receiver (Airplay, control via App, DLNA, HTC Connect, MHL, vTuner web radio, Gappless playback, HDMI CEC, 3D, 4K Ultra HD Video Scaler) silver

Re brand is the VSX-923 from Pioneer, who apparently left a very good impression in the preliminary test on Areadvd.de. This is why he came to me as an interesting test candidate in question.

I was really curious about the result, especially as the Pioneer (I was admitted never been a fan of this brand) supposedly should come up with completely new sonic virtues, such as for example, far fewer sharp heights, high dynamics and playfulness, and a jet-black bass.

The calibration was even simpler than the Denon, since only 1 measuring point is required. Unlike Audyssey MultEQ XT is the Advanced MCACC of Pioneer supposedly possible to make further interventions in the sound characteristics of the receiver, without throwing overboard the measured results. That was for me, unfortunately not possible. If you wanted to manually intervene at Pioneer in the equalizer, you had to connect the calibration system off (just the way as Audyssey). Perhaps it was in my case, but only at an early firmware version. For the Pioneer award are clearly more details on the sound corrections made by him than it does Audyssey.

But now to the actual sound: even after repeated calibration I was pretty disappointed with the sound character of the Pioneer. Compared to the Denon he sounded pointed and sharp, though extensive and transparent, but it is absolutely not warm. Voices lacked precisely the substance that had awarded the Denon. Although the bass caught too deep and brutal, of fine detail or even charm but could be no question.

I just guess that the Pioneer of sound character not just suits my speakers. I would imagine that speakers that are inherently more cautious in the treble range, benefiting from the character of the Pioneer.

For the VSX-923 has been tested by the candidates on the richest array of terminals and video functions.

Marantz SR6007 Marantz SR6007 Receiver :: (HDMI port, iPod / iPhone control: direct control, USB port)

The last candidate I had my (actually more "for fun") Marantz SR6007 to come into the house, since price plays the Marantz already in a much higher league than the other candidates, which is why a comparison of course is unfair. However, another consignor had an unbeatably cheap deal which made the SR6007 but then appeared only marginally more expensive than the Pioneer.

Marantz is incidentally connected to the company Denon, which can be seen in many details. The software is the same as Denon, see the menus virtually identical from, but the Marantz devices are high-quality settled as the Denon. In the concrete example, the presents so that it is the SR6006 (the predecessor of the SR6007) or less a Denon Denon AVR 2313 acted (the bigger brother of the tested by me Denon AVR 2113). The engineers at Marantz are then again invested extra hand to increase the existing audiophile qualities of Denon again - and by the way given it a completely different look.

Granted, you have the Marantz design like: A nostalgic-sounding round porthole in the middle, at a large distance flanked by two knobs, but with brushed aluminum front and bulging cheeks meet certainly not to everyone's taste. My taste but definitely - and I - probably because of my previous Marantz PM40 stereo amplifier -'m a little bit biased Marantz, the name Marantz already for some years now but for the ultimate in sound quality to a still reasonable price.

So much for that, which is why I also took the Marantz SR6007 me into the house.

The Marantz brings plenty of connectivity options with including 2 HDMI outputs, each with 2 optical and coaxial inputs - and even a turntable MMC port. There is also a full-blown video section besides Upsacling and filters.

The sound character is the smaller Denon naturally not dissimilar: In principle, very airy and transparent, this dynamic and powerful. However, unlike the Denon it sounds a little less warm, probably because what is however rather that a Denon (me certainly very pleasing) bring up slightly artificial heat. The biggest difference between the Denon and Marantz are certainly the clarity, simplicity and transparency, with the Marantz airs. Especially in the bass range of the SR6007 comes over again much cleaner and more differentiated. The upper mids are characterized by more transparent and more detailed, the highs a bit less silky, but also a little more open. The Marantz revealed details that could be seen at the Denon only with listening closely. The difference compared to the other candidates, especially in terms what resolution and dimensionality, was really striking.

In the Marantz Bass sounds different: Especially in the film industry, it is quite a familiarization to switch from Denon bass on some "filigree" Bass of Marantz. If you look at but once used to it, it becomes clear that here no means something is missing, but that the bass simply more accurate and cleaner suppressed, as in the already good Denon. Would I want to lean very far from the window, I would say at this point that the Denon are somewhat "gesoundet" compared to Marantz, while the latter was more tuned for naturalness and analysis. But I do not, of course ...

Conclusion:

The two Denon make in any case represent a good investment, although at the small price difference of the grip to slightly larger previous model AVR 2123 quite worthwhile. Who attaches importance to more connections and video functions, should do in any case. The X2000, the smallest model of the current year, which features such amenities will cost, currently just under EUR 600.00.

Whether the Pioneer SVX-923 from home sounds like he is presented with me, or if he has not only tolerated my rather fine spiritual speakers, I can not judge. He has definitely a full-fledged facilities, both in terms of connectivity, the video functions. However, I would prefer here purely tonal reasons definitely the Denon AVR 2113.

Who still wants to access a larger number and with the Denon AVR 2313 toying, can grip the road price of currently just under EUR 600,00 in my opinion straight to the newer (and certainly better sounding) Marantz SR6007 given. As already the successor to SR 6008 is in the starting blocks, the price of 6007 will probably fall a bit anyway.

Compared to my old Harman Kardon AVR 3550 all test candidates win clearly, simply because of the modern equipment, but above all due to the now truly effective room analysis systems. Also listening to stereo music in Dolby Surround mode has made a quantum leap forward. At HK that was never a real option; too much the sound has distinguished by the surround processor of the pure stereo sound: Less powerful, rather spongy and with much less level needed here every time to be adjusted by hand, so that the result was somewhat useful. The candidates currently tested listening to stereo in surround mode, however, was a delight.

Personally, I would have actually the Denon X1000 been enough as a significant improvement to the Harman Kardon AVR 3550. The older Denon AVR 2113 offered itself as an alternative to the X1000, because it offers a whole lot more amenities and just a tad bit sounds more mature. Also "hooked" Here the remote control. The price of the AVR 2113 on the Pioneer VSX-923 Marantz SR6007 however until the road was not very far, but at the same to do the job properly - and me to decide finally on the Marantz. Whether the extra cost is worth it, everyone must decide for themselves. In my personal case, the Marantz SR6007 definitely the - in the truest sense of the word - "cheapest" solution Finally, I buy my next AV receiver again until earlier than 10 years; o).
