Palm Zire 31 handheld incl. Kirrio navigation system with maps for Germany / Austria / Switzerland (Electronics)

Customer Review

I have this bundle end of March 2005 bought as a gift, and even briefly tested but thoroughly. I can make out of memory no information about the used software version.
Positive:
+ Low-cost navigation
+ Rapid recalculation on deviation from route
+ Adreßübernahme from the Address Book
+ Destination specified by clicking on the map possible (if exact address unknown)
+ Intuitive as map / map used (zoom, position the map section)
+ Driving preferences adjustable detailed (eg highway 80 km / h, highways 100 km / h => favor of rural roads in the route calculation)
Problems:
- Virtually no printed documentation. Suitable is the bundle without a computer, but just then without instructions
- Low resolution display makes use of a map and destination entry by clicking on the map with difficulty to impractical => probably the Zire72- or Tungsten bundle better
- Also in the delivery condition, ie without installing the supplied software or even additional software, there is occasionally a (fatal) "not enough memory" error. Once the GPS mouse was recognized only after reset of Zire31, several times submitted a restart of MapSonic, and to re-enter the destination. That's me but only when happens route calculation, not during navigation. Actually, this bundle is therefore not matched, shall be called, the hardware does not meet the minimum requirements required by your software! So I would recommend it for technically inexperienced users recommend in any case.
- Time information are based on the set driving preferences and know apparently no traffic lights, speed limits or storage areas. If you set a section of 70 km / h in the city, you get appropriate times. And who can predict his average speeds even for an unknown route? Conclusion: Continue and / or arrival time specification are practically unusable
- In the driving preferences is not clear what exactly the difference between [from memory] federal roads, highways, main roads and streets is
- Direction data are sometimes simply misleading. Example "Apply": on a street with "green belts" in the middle is the instruction "turn left". Located in turn you should then turn left again - if you have not recognized the maneuvers previously on the map, it is unlikely to succeed. Looking at the map, however, draws significantly on the road. Example "left turn": when turning left onto a road with "green belts" in the middle was the instruction "go straight" to cross the carriageway that crosses from left to right. In the middle of the intersection then "turn left" - it could have been but must classify the turning left lanes with separate traffic lights. Too bad too!
- Generally lacking in view of the very "naive" definition of "road" a perspective on the next navigation instruction also. If two statements are only a few meters apart, the second is either unnecessary or not comply without warning.
- Sometimes MapSonic is too talkative ("turn slightly to the right", where we follow the main road, instead of turning left diagonally in a nondescript side street), sometimes surprisingly silent (a junction with right-turn rule is silently ignored, because you do not choice has). The former not only makes noise, but can also see a more on the display to the next navigation instruction, which distracts from the road
- Though it can adjust a pedestrian mode, the GPS mouse but you can only use with a cigarette lighter - lighter is not enough ;-).
- The route calculation shows as time remaining fantasy values that allow a maximum of roughly guess whether it will take a whole long or not. This can be for a short time but already appreciate accurate!
- When using addresses from the address must be looking for every time the city, street and house number and confirm (or optionally select from a list). It's frustrating!
- Selecting starting and destination point spread over the menu items "Select start point", "select destination" (both manual entry) and "addresses" (from address book for starting or destination point). The logical way of thinking, however, "I want to select the destination point" and then "I want to take him out of the Address Book." The first point you need not select the way - it results from the determined position via GPS.
- Without cables hanging pronounced and unpleasant. A Zire72 with Bluetooth GPS mouse (with its own battery) appears also in that attractive
Some of these items may not appear serious, but they add to the following overall picture: Ergonomics has played either no role in the design of the software, or there were no skills available in this field. Technically, the software - apart from the storage problem. Compare to other products I can not pull unfortunately.
Performance-wise, the software would be better off on a Zire72 or a Tungsten with plenty of storage. I have tried this but not constellations.
Suitable is the bundle - with the restrictions described - and fairly priced. I personally would not buy it again.
