The surfaces and the processing of the camera act robust and resilient. The lens closes quickly after switching off and the interval for the automatic standby / off can be adjusted (30 s, 1 min, 5 min or 30 min.). If the On / Off switch flashes, it takes however another 3 minutes to the camera finally turns off (Extended manual, p.21).
The On / Off button is slightly recessed, so the camera does not go into his pocket to accidentally. However, the button is just as big as a pinhead. The switch is top - so around one second. The Tripod screwing plastic acts very robust and susceptible to wear, but that was in the S6600 also so!
The camera uses the standard SD / SDXC / SDHC memory cards. The memory card slot with battery is located on the bottom and is easily accessible. The mini-USB port located on the side under a plastic cover for which you need as always good fingernails to freizuknippern the part. However, a HDMI port does not exist. Overall, the flap acts well made and closes even after frequent opening and closing still clean. Recharging the battery takes approximately 2h50min unfortunately. Upon delivery, the battery was, however, already after 60 min again full!

Operation is intuitive: wrist strap off, switch on, adjust the flight time, date and language - then kanns already go. Nevertheless, it is worth downloading the complete guide to the Nikon page. Especially good we liked that the camera can be controlled with a few buttons and menus. Perfect for anyone who just wants to have only good pictures and not interested in the technical side of photography. Here you will also find the beginner easy to navigate! Yet some can be at the awakening interest so adjusted individually! The image information on the display and the Date Stamp can easily be turned on and off.
The shutter button has a pleasantly large diameter and responds very well. The adjustable autofocus is pretty fast in daylight and attracts precise sharp. The zoom is fast on the scene and is quickly and safely sharp. The shutter speed is very good to satisfactory in daylight in order with little residual light. Unfortunately, the Cam prone to camera shake and blurring in total too much pressure on the trigger (as is also the manual) despite image stabilizer on. So a little paying attention - but you get used to it quickly. The picture quality is very good to satisfactory depending on lighting conditions. We particularly liked that the images are high-contrast and color-fast. Who moves in the photographic standard range, should here be able to achieve very good results. Only when little light and strong push come together, the picture quality is noticeably noisy!
I especially enjoyed us that Nikon has incorporated many features into the device, which can be controlled via the crosshairs, the OK button, the Scene parameters or the menu button simple. Very clearly, the division into three main menus: Photo, Film, settings. Here you will find your way very quickly. In addition to 18 scene modes (eg, animal portrait, backlight, landscape, snow, night / Portrait, Panorama Assist, interior, museum, fireworks etc.), 8 image quality levels, 5 AF area mode functions incl. Subject Tracking, 2 AF functions in videos, Sequential shooting (1Bild - 16er series), automatic modes, slideshow, Self-timer (2s and 10s), video capabilities (240/480/720 / 25p, PAL / NTSC), Voice memo to pictures, glamor retouching, red-eye correction are, there are still many ways to edit photos with creative effects immediately and directly in the device. After the photo on demand simply press OK and you've got others, POP, extra rich colors, paintings, posterization, High Key, Toy Effect, Fisheye, Miniature effects.
However, the automatic image processing feature also ensures that it takes a little too long before the next image can be shot. You can see the creative effects but simply on or off the bottom of the camera menu. A little you could shorten the time in active creative effects also, where one image processing function not only waits and expresses once again the shutter button. Or you can go to the continuous shooting mode if you're just on Snapshot hunting. With deactivated KE function Cam is amazingly fast again ready for operation in bright light - so it can be weiterfotographiert almost instantaneously and without error. You can edit the images later of course. If you call up the image on the play button on, you also have full access to all creative effects. Very good. Unfortunately the camera is not exactly a speed miracle in image processing. But, well - the whole package counts!
Very good example is that you can use the zoom lever for both the normal zooming in photographing and for zooming into a finished picture. When zooming in the picture you can select a desired image and save it as a completely new image. In addition, you can use the zoom control directly under heart back in the calendar view the pictures taken in the in the controller in the direction W / convenience is rotated. So here it will save you searching the menu. Or the playback volume of videos is hereby fixed! Very good.
Who prefer to go and / or photographed in daylight, is here on the safe side, because the Bildqualitätist amazingly well. If you shoot mostly at twilight, very little residual light or at dusk or want to print photos very large, should probably look for another camera.
Slight problems arise even in brightly backlit and when using the flash. Here, the device tends to slight overexposure or excessive lightening of the edges on the device or by activating the backlight program can be improved, however. With little residual light camera takes considerably longer to focus on it and a successful image. Every now and then finds the autofocus is not a sharp image. Here the device to its limits and the error rate increases. Nevertheless, the image quality is little residual light for this segment definitely still in reasonable range. Also macro / close-up (must be separately switched on the flower icon on the crosshairs) up to 3 cm distance from the object are possible and top. It was amazing how quickly the image was super sharp. No vain and wild back-and-forth Gezoome observed. In fotographierter handwriting you could even see the different ink distribution!
The video image quality is impressive, the sound is a bit on heat, but one can enable the wind noise filter. It is very good that you can, in the video menu to permanent AF, which would indeed provide a continual rumblings on the soundtrack simply on or off. The playback volume is controlled by the zoom lever. Impressive what this little device is able to do!

Overall, a cool, flat and lightweight camera with many features and (depending on the light situation) very good to satisfactory image quality. Who is in the photographic standard range, will come here to very good results. You can make videos, edit the image right in the camera, can store image sections directly on the device as a new picture, 18 scene modes, numerous creative functions and automatic modes are available and the battery lasts long through. We draw half a star for one or the other venial weakness from (susceptibility to camera shake, tripod hole, poorer picture quality / lightning speed / autofocus in low residual light, image processing speed) .Ansonsten obtained here is a small, compact, amazingly versatile, flat, feature-rich and easy Cam-to-use. An HDMI port is actually not exist, only USB.
PS Since the Nikon Coolpix S3600 from the same series as the Nikon Coolpix S6600 and I know both devices, a brief comparison offers. The Nikon Coolpix S6600 is about twice as thick, but has for a rotating display for better Selfies and shots close to the ground, an HDMI output, a wireless function, a very good gesture control for Selfies and a slightly larger zoom (12 times ), less MP. So if you do not so much have to pay attention to the thickness and weight of the device, you should risk a look here! Because the additional features of the S6600 are really great!
