Country-rock bands and singers, there are thousands, but probably only a few who so thoroughly honest unadorned songs deliver as Eric Church. Here the lyrics play with, because Church sings the everyday joys and concerns - especially with respect to religion, as the album title hints at - the little man in the US Province. This is done without drift into a shallow Country Life enthusiasm. Rather Church plays with the clichés of the conservative hillbilly. Even a sensitive issue such as the death penalty is sung in No. 8 "Lightning". And this in a way that in the end neither a clear "for" nor a "resist" remains to this judicial means, but only concern and the desire for reconciliation. (Music with such depth I know otherwise almost entirely of the classical ...) But besides this more than contemplative moment there are enough such perk is where losgerockt, mostly with the same fun mischievousness that the just over 30-year-old singer-songwriter speaks from his face. No way of grobklotzigem Redneck posturing! It will be interesting to the next disc, "Carolina" (2008).
