1. For whom a slide scanner is ever conceived? But made only for the pictures with cameras of yesteryear (from the i-generation perspective) and then followed by frame by frame by hand (yes yes, so what gabs again) cut, put in small Plastikrähmchen and then in unwieldy Magazines have gepfriemelt. But these are not the 20-30 year olds. In all likelihood, therefore, the potential users are likely to have reached a certain age and be equipped with a basic level of patience. And this patience is necessary. So who was willing to create slides with a certain effort and archive should be as ready time for the process from scanning to invest to the final digital image. Who has no desire to apply for so little time, you should look for other solutions. These are then but significantly more expensive. In no case the Rollei DF-S 290 HD is capable of achieving even acceptable results in a high speed. A post-processing via software is mandatory (!!!). I can therefore absolutely the canticles in single user reviews do not understand.
2. The following basic rule, any potential buyer should be aware: The worse the starting material the worse the (digital) results. From bad images can do no more good with the best software. After the first approximately 2000 scanned images as I can, so I think the differences in the scan result between images of a cheap camera with a fixed focal length, lichtschwachem and total bad lens (the first camera) and images of a (later) SLR with quite ordinary lenses and other equipment judge quite well. One should assess its quality standards realistic and know that the scan result on a regular basis not as good as the original.
3. The device itself is made in China (yes it is), but it is clearly a very good impression and has (almost) all the necessities. Very important: Potential buyers should specify a blower and a dust brush in addition to the necessary memory card, remember (!!!). Former analog SLR photographers could do something and have it reused here. In any case, dust is the greatest enemy of the slide scanner. For operation has been written in other reviews already enough. Therefore, this only: image corrections (whether brightness or color) not perform the most red-purple-tinged bzw.- photos with the device, but only with software. Device-side correction tests provide a grotto bad result, while it is possible to save and improve it a lot with the software. In my experience, I've tried Miscellaneous there is only one case for the device-side image correction: So strange as it may sound, take pictures (still) darker. Was the original received with a weak camera, it comes in the scan result often to reflections on the skin (sun, unfavorable light), which present themselves as bright spots and which are no longer rid with software. The darker the scanner is set, the less are these reflections. The overall brightness of the image can then raise again with software.
4. To scan itself: The packaging advertises scan in seconds and up to 20 scan slides in 1 minute. This is theoretically possible, but should be quickly forgotten (do not want to Hirsch later in post man - s.unter 5). The amount foreseen for the quick scan stacker slider does not always work properly with Agfa CS-frames. This is obviously because the carriage, which the slide will be transported to the exposure unit while the there located previous slide rauswirft for different frame formats is suitable (ie thicker than CS-frame). Since this in the amount of space available as a CS frame is thick, it happens now and again that the previous image nachgeschobene not out pushes, but lies down about it and so entangled the entire mechanism. Then you just have to lend a hand and take out the entire carriage. But you can live with.
5. Rather than just described mechanical weakness slows the phenomenon dust from a scan in seconds. Who lint and stains on bright blue sky, on the white wall, on the white shirt, (blond) hair or right in the face, etc. are all the same, which can actually scan in seconds. All other not. The transparency unit attracts dust like a magnet. Therefore, these should be cleaned after every 3-4 scans with the brush supplied. Each slide should, before (!), It is inserted into the stack magazine, be freed with a dusting brush and / or a blower of dust. Hold pinch it against the light. Clearly, in this procedure no 20 slides can be scanned per minute. If you want to remove the stains but subsequently via software, which can take 10-15 minutes per image before. That is much more time consuming.
Finally, one last word for interpolation. I have no desire to files with a size of 18 or 20 MB (before the editing on a PC) when the result of the normal setting (file size approximately 3-5 MB) is no different recognizable. The end result is already elaborated on the computer. In summary, I want to vote as follows: as a mechanical aid en route to the digital image: 4 stars, as a terminal for generating digital images: 1 Star. But since I had a little informed me in advance, I bought it as a tool. Therefore, the 4 stars.
