I purchased the S110 as a discontinued model. At a price of about 200, - Euro, the camera offers a great picture quality and is available as a take-along-secondary camera for SLR photographers as well as certain restrictions (moving objects) recommended for automatic photographers and beginners.
The Canon acts with its metal housing simple and elegant and high quality. The black model has a grippy roughened surface. The dimensions are pocket-fit, although it is of course still much smaller Compact.
A big selling point of the camera is the combined operation via mechanical switches / dials and the touch screen. Most settings may be made alternatively via the screen or via the mechanical controls. The in each selected mode allowable settings can be accessed via a clearly structured menu. Two dials on the front and back of the camera provide quick access to important settings. The setting of the camera is fast and intuitive of the hand, and is resolved great for a model of this size.
Already in Full Auto mode, the camera shoots very good pictures. In addition to the fully automatic, it offers a number of selectable automatic modes (eg Portrait, Night, Snow ...). This makes it suitable for photographers who do not want to burden them with manual settings up. However, the camera does not provide sport mode for moving objects. While the camera is in some automatic modes detect movements and adapt accordingly the program (it shows the motion detection on the screen). In practice, however, the motion detection does not work well. Especially in bad light, there are often blur. One can this shortcoming by using the auto iris handle. In order for the camera in my opinion, however, is not recommended for fully automatic photographer, since the auto iris requires some basic knowledge of photography.
In addition to automatic functions, the camera time, shutter priority and manual mode. The settings will be fast out of hand, so that the camera unlike other compact can also be used in manual mode seriously.
In a special effect mode, the usual effects like fisheye, color separation and Toys effect offered. The effects make impressive images, but can not be combined with manual settings. In addition, the camera provides color effects from black and white to the emphasis of individual colors (eg blue stress for shots with bright sky).
The lens is equipped with an aperture 1: luminous intensity 2.0, unfortunately, only in wide angle. Upon actuation of the zoom, the brightness decreases rapidly and is at best, be described in the 5x zoom as mediocre. The image stabilization works very well. From the hand shot photos at 1/15 second no problem, but only in non-moving objects are meaningful.
The light sensitivity of the sensor ranges from ISO 80-12800. The image quality up to ISO 400 like it very much. In addition (to 1600), the image is blurred, but is still well used for watching on TV or small prints. Unfortunately, it is the Auto ISO setting is not limited to ISO 400. Either one chooses to 1600 reaching automatic or one represents the ISO value manually.
ISO values up to 6,400 can be used in extreme situations. The images are blurred and noisy, color noise is kept within limits. With ISO 12800, however partially whole surfaces are colored incorrectly.
The built-in flash is motorized and automatically moves out (or back on) if the flash is needed. Of course, the flash can also be switched off completely or force. The range of the flash is not too large and comparable to other compacts. The location of the flash may be getting used to depending on the attitude of the camera.
The camera offers videos to FullHD. The image quality is very good. In low light, the camera has some trouble focusing. The camera offers a special slow motion mode that also works well.
