Customer Review

To write a review about an album of Dream Theater, it means one thing above all: whining at a high level. For twenty-five years, the New York already bepflügen now the field of rock world, and have been built a reputation among fans and experts, who has no equal in the world. Always focused on thoughtful and complex music, coupled with the highest possible game art. There is no doubt that Dream Theater have long withdrawn from all other colleagues from the MTV-rock music scene, at least when it comes to the artistic and creative aspect.
To assess the value of the current album a dramatic turn of events ", a small overview is needed in the past. The reviewer leans now times violently out of the window and claims to know music from DT reasonably well, because he's a fan the first hour and has heard every studio album Feels thousand times. And as in every band's history are ups and downs, both in terms of personal and creative things. That's good, because without change there is no innovation. Sometimes new things must be tried in order at least to know afterwards where one has its strengths. But the reviewer digresses.
The little drama at DT began after Six Dregrees Of Inner Turbulence, that fantastic double album from 2002. With his successor Train of Thought, the band wanted to release a highlight album should be a collection of pieces that especially for a concert the fans boil. The result is a dark album with low proportions Keyboard and dark black base. Real highlights of the album were, in the opinion of the reviewer only the pieces Honor Thy Father and In the Name of God. The successor Octavarium was geared a little more commercial. Little Proganteile, simple compositions and a manageable average length of the pieces. The only positive exception is the title song represents. Octavarium (song) is unique and has already made you curious about the successor. Great intro with RudessŽ fingerboard, (necessarily the Octavarium animation look on the net) through and through and around coherent and finally Prog. But a piece can not save the disc actually.
Then came Systematic Chaos and the world seemed to be okay. A great album from start to finish. Superb compositions, loads of Prog, high proportion of keyboard and guitar runs, exactly what we want to hear. Unfortunately, also the last successful work with the participation of Mike Portnoy.
Then came the nice attempt "Black Clouds & Silver Linings. Without the crusher song The Count of Tuscany would be the album to almost be called total failure. At the same time it represents the culmination of Portnoyifizierung the band represents. MPŽs influence on the song writing has become an extent that the band have openly harmed. And honestly, medley songs at the concert, people can freak (Live at the Budokan) put on a studio album a paragon of Kreativitätslosigkeit represents and the play The Best of Times actually belongs to a Mike Portnoy solo album.
Then came the big bang. Portnoy out, Mangini pure. The reviewer can not judge MP`s reasons and motivation and therefore saves a comment.
The title a dramatic turn of events "describes fully the rotation or rather the liberation of the band from their creative prison. The album no less, the return to old strengths, which fall DT have made to the band that it is today. Each composition is refined to the last detail, implemented highly complex and high playful art. The arrangements are world class and the Chorus Parts leave goosebumps rise.
Opener On The Backs of Angels can anläuten after the first few minutes, in which direction it goes throughout the album. Voluminous, orchestral sound, strong runs of keyboards and guitar. At last a more than successful opener.
According to the reviewers Build me up, break me down is the weakest song on the album, in contrast to other reviewers, which colonize the song far higher. The piece has simply too little scar and had a piece can tolerate more solo parts and Proganteile. The mentioned excellent instrumentation, smashing riffs and clever use of sound effects can save the piece but still.
So, from now is an end to children's birthday party, because it begins in earnest on the album. Lost Not Forgotten rolling towards us, shaking at the start only once a right straight Prog and Frickelspiel by DT Recipe from his sleeve to then mighty strong to march on. Passengers passages, a tip Chorus Part and the first extended solo game campaign make the piece, the first serious exclamation.
After a brief breath with This Is The Life. The audience is packed into the first half with fantastically beautiful ballad tones of acoustic guitar, piano and soft strings in cotton wool to then strive towards a great finale with a strong, full-bodied and anthemic sound and prepare for the next breaker.
A deeper bass shaman singing combined with choral singing heralds the beginning of a tip title. Bridges in the Sky is a crusher song before the Lord. Hard-hitting riffs push the piece forward powerfully and Jordan Rudess creates an eerie ominous mood. The band brings this piece back all the qualities for which it is known and we have long missed. Endless solo parts, the perfect interplay of Petrucci / Rudess, the perfect chorus part and as acting freed James La Brie offer here the first highlight of the album.
No time for a breather. Outcry at stands and the piece prescht exactly is going on in such a way as the previous one. All actors walk on in this highly dramatic piece in top form and show all facets of their skills. The solo parts are urproggy. It is flooded with sound elements, playful rhythm changes, the highest technology and can only sit open-mouthed in front of the speakers. Another highlight
It follows with Far from Heaven the first real ballad of the disc, while the shortest piece. Only supported by RudessŽ piano with some subtle strings warbles La Brie gentle and sad poem, therefore, that brings back the overwrought listeners back to earth. Very, very well done and beautiful.
One but we still have. Breaking all Illusions is the last song on the album breaker. The piece is less dramatic and held serious as Bridges ... and Outcry but trumps with an eruption of positive energy. The piece represents the largest and most impressive expression of what DT assets paid. As if it were nothing, cut the five one run after another out. A reef is replaced by the next better to leave after the listener relax briefly in a slow section and then to send the solo part with a classic DT Progelement on the home stretch. The band is bubbling with enthusiasm and fun of playing. This is the band that we want to hear.
With the last piece Beneath the Surface DT decide their latest work and, unlike most previous albums there is no epic like Octavarium, but a beautiful ballad that pulls the listener immediately into its spell. With magnificent Akkustikgitarrenklängen, successful strings support and a short but succinct Keyboard solo, the band completes the album, the listener is sinking after this tremendous sound flood and the endless tempo and Rhytmuswechseln in deep relaxation and is silky smooth released back to reality.
Dream Theater have set with this album again fully on its strengths. The band has always played their best music when the Keyboard share was highly oriented and has delivered with its world-famous guitar duels. We experience joy, high technology, highly complex compositions, a powerful orchestral sound and full of volume and recovered fun at work. Some reviewers may have echauffiert about the amount of ballads, but the whole album has been thought out to the last detail and every piece is exactly at the place where it belongs, to turn it into a coherent and harmonious piece of rock music.
A word to Mike Mangini. His play on the album is impeccable. Special praise for tackling the mammoth task to take on Portnoy chair. Mangini has said from the outset that he will not be a second Portnoy, but wants to bring his game. It may be that his drums do not sound on this album so demanding, like Portnoy, but the band will have meant something in this type of production. Mike Mangini is always better integrate with security in the band and deliver even greater benefits in the future. The reviewer raises Portnoy's contributions to the band clearly, but he did not miss him. And if I had a choice, I choose five percent thinner Drums and thirty percent better songs.
A dramatic turn of events, the best album in 2002 and very great sport of Dream Theater before Systematic Chaos.
