From the classic Sondheim shows this is certainly the "lightest". Based on several tales whose figures he has thrown together a story told in which the characters chase their dreams and fulfill them: Cinderella is Princess, the baker and his wife had a baby, Rapunzel gets her prince (and get out of her tower) Jack is rich. In the second act, however, all realize that everything is not as fantastic as they believed ... and then they also have to fight against the wife of the giant, which is climbed down the beanstalk to avenge her dead husband. The cast, led by Bernadette Peters as a witch is consistently great. This version is the original version of the show, in London, and the new Broadway version both new songs as well as new Figuern have been added. This recording, however, is still the best of all. If you want to know Sondheim you should start with this.
