*** Commissioning ***
The device is connected relatively quickly. Mandatory batteries for the remote control are included, which is ever fine. An HDMI cable for connection to television or video projector, of course not with this - we had one of our (old) DVD player. Connection via HDMI, optical cable to the receiver and the lying ready LAN cable designed easily. After the first start you will be performed using the Quick Setup on the screen through the required settings, which is done in less than 5 minutes. Even the network connection has to work right away (assuming the LAN's previously clean fitted) .always useful it is to check for an update of the firmware - the point is good to see (Setup - Network Update). Also worked just fine.
*** *** Processing
The "On / Off", "Play", etc. installed on the housing keys act but very cheap - is "plastic parts" with a lot of game. In addition, the buttons (black on black) are already barely visible in the light, as not backlit. In the half-dark or dark it is almost impossible to find the right button on the unit. By contrast, the remote looks quite high and is pleasant to use.
*** *** Operation
In the Home menu is selected first which type of media you want to see (video, photos, music) and then from where
(Blueray, Internet, USB, DLNA server) and finally what file (s). I find the menu structure very intuitive - the unit responds pleasantly quickly - it's great fun to scroll through the menus. If a Blu-ray disc inserts you start playback as you would expect, incidentally, immediately without which one would do anything in the menu. In contrast, the player starts playback of audio CD's after "still repeated requests" by pressing the play button.
*** Blu-ray / DVD ***
The HD playback (tested with Avartar) of Bluerays on an HD projector is impressive. Colors and sharpness are gigantic. The upscaling of DVD's work, brings (at least on a HD projector) in my opinion, but no "wow factor".
*** IPad / iPhone control ***
To control the S470 via an iPad or iPhone you have to download the app "BD Remote" from the App Store. The app will now search for the BlueRay player in the network - the player will only be found if the unit is "on" - the turning on via the remote control from the "Stand-By" will not do. The app is not really innovative - look at the TV, where you are in the menu, looking at the App the right horse and the right "button" and press. This feature is in my opinion the operating conceptually still in "experimental stage" - even if it works technical principle. The only restriction is that compared to the "real" remote control clearly noticeable delay arrive with the commands on the devices.
*** DNLA client ***
The device detects any problems on the my Netwerkplatte installed DLNA server (Twonky). Playback of images directly from the disc works project and the operation is quite intuitive. On playback of music (mp3's) is not a problem. There are great problems even when playing videos (M2TS, AVCHD, H.264, etc.) - is still room in disarray. Reliable I could only play AVI's. For me playing the HD videos on DNLA works not even the same file can be played back via connected USB hard drive directly. Here one notices that the BDP-S470 (and its smaller colleague S370) only since June to have any DNLA client on board - he is obviously still in the "experimental stage" and not work reliably with the different Server Software. Here helps probably just wait for the next firmware version.
*** USB hard drive ***
Right on the front of the device, a USB hard drive or a USB stick can be connected - the recognition of my USB drive worked quickly and easily. After choosing what you want to watch (video, audio, images) you can easily navigate in the directory structure - it supports all major formats - even playing HDVideos (M2TS, HDAVI) has funktioniert.Update: Unfortunately, only disks are supported formatted by FAT32 file system - all others are probably not recognized. Also may be present on the plate only a single partition. Thus files can file sizes larger than 4GB can not be played via USB, as these can not be stored on FAT32 drives
*** Other Features ***
The advertised 3D capability unfortunately I could not test, because i owned no corresponding Wiedergabebgeräte. To reasonably future-proof to invest, but it was important to me that the player supports 3D principle. I assume that this will also work in the future (after a few firmware updates by the manufacturer) then.
*** Noise ***
The high-frequency noises described here by other users drive cool during operation do not occur to me.
*** Summary ***
Cons:
* DNLA client and iPhone control not mature
* Cheap-looking, barely discernible Controls on the system
* Only USB disks with FAT32 file system are supported (no files> 4 GB possible)
Pro:
* Great playing Bluerays
* Basic 3D capability
* Price / performance good
For playback of Bluerays the S470 is a great player who is the 3D technology, at least in principle, support and thus designed reasonably future-proof. Small restrictions in processing are still acceptable for me - many of the "innovative features" (DNLA, iPhone control) but are only for "experimental".
I can the player also due to the good price / performance ratio but in spite of the restrictions recommended!
