2) positive
+ Formats-diversity: XVID (tested), DivX, MPG-1,2 (VCD, SVCD, tested), MP3 (tested), MP4, WMV (tested), (tested DVD, no menus, but no rueckler / jumps between the VOB files), H.264 (tested). ..
+ Variety unterstuetzter container VOB, AVI, TS, MKV, ...
+ Harddisk: recognizes all used USB drives, FAT32, NTS, multiple partitions in parallel (except for sporadic recognition problems, s (7).)
+ Recognizes all USB sticks
+ No stuttering / Haenger during playback (no MPG, VOB yet, even MKV / H264); clearly superior to a DVD player with USB port here
+ HD output 1080p, 24Hz
+ Can slideshow of photos including background music (saves generation on the PC)
+ Long filenames (incl. File-size) by tickertextartigem horizontal scrolling
+ Good folder-navigation (media database using / I recommend off)
+ Many photo formats (even when Zoom function is not famous): jpg, png, bmp, gif, tif
3) a few points of criticism
- No DVD menus
- No DTS decoder (not output DTS audio via HDMI, only the optical connector where you have to connect AV Receiver), no DTS downmix
- No slow motion (front / back)
- A still image
- Only 16x forward (but with firmware 1:01:02 additionally 10min jumps by pressing the FF NEXT)
- No kapitelspruenge with DVD / VOB
-) No ethernet (but doable via special firmware)
-) No wireless
4) Update 13/06/2009 after a few weeks in live operation: still totally thrilled used by this device, the Addendum only supplementing / clarification
+) Also .ISO image files are read (you have this so do not decompose into individual VOB files via dvdshrink)
+) Kapitelspruenge with MKV files (not for DVD / VOB) are very well [assuming chapters in video available] possible (not via key NEXT / PREV, but through options and icon on the top right)
-) Slow construction of Thumb view (icons)
-) .TS Stream without sound
-) Not all .jpg files are displayed; does it work, however, if you convert the case includes Arcsoft software; could not clearly figure out what it is; usually happens when quality factor of luminance and / or chrominance +) WMV9 and WMV3 codec funkionieren
-) WMV2 codec does not work (not as RV24 codec)
+) Codec to xvid FMP4 (related) funkioniert
+) Subtitles work fine: the subtitles may not be included in the video forced, but the data of subtitle files only need to be identical and placed in the same directory to be (ending up on .sts course) to Videoddatei; The following formats are supported: .srs, .ass / .SSA, .SUB / .IDX, .SMI
5) Supplement dated 05.07.2009 to experience with WD Support:
-) First problem: the remote control is defective (just like that, after about 2 months of use); How often do you experience this problem in general, I can not judge in the WD support pages and forums the problem is not represented prominently;
-) I do not recommend a contact via e-mail from the Support page of WD because the promised response time of 1 - 3 days is not respected.
+) The telephone hotline is very friendly, accessible in German and without long queue at the indicated times.
-) But the reaction time can be desired: the hotline staff to say, send a replacement remote, but as this has not yet arrived for a week, and will be asked by phone, it turns out that this was not yet shipped.
-) Lt. Hotline is handling and shipping at least. Last 2 weeks
6) Addendum dated 15.08.2009
-) The remote I finally get after 3 weeks of WD sent, the Gewaehrleistungsfall has thus needs about 5 weeks for processing. Now there are again full enjoyment with the WD TV HD Media Player.
7) Note on problems with hard drive detection
-) It sometimes occur problems to recognize the hard drive to the USB port of the WD HD TV; on the WD Support page (English version, Answer ID 2748) and on various forums (AVS Forum) is also reported it, but there is no clear cause or unique solution.
-) The problem occurred with me on and interestingly enough (just) with the larger WD drives
+) Trekstor 120GB FAT32 1.8 "drive, no separate power connection: never problems
Never: +) TEVION / Seagate 320GB 2.5 "drive (USB + eSATA) with 2 partitions a la 120GB FAT32 and NTFS 200GB, has a separate power connection, works on WD HD TV only via power via USB issues
-) WD MyBook 1TB (model with USB2.0 / FireWire / eSATA, 3.5 "): after the disk had been 9xx GB works with a single primary NTFS partition, she was suddenly no longer recognized after I after a few CONNECTING weeks when they already had a level of approximately 800 GB
-) WD MyStudio 1TB (model with USB2.0 / FireWire / eSATA, 3.5 ") was not recognized at the beginning, when I about 450GB and 1x extends them again with two partitions formatted namely 1x primaer NTFS / NTFS logical approx 450GB
-) I work with generally disconnected media library, but also how to enable this in the system settings of the WD HD TV brought no remedy.
Although +) it does not always work right away, but all problems could be finally solved in me and that the following measures, in descending order of Expectation:
i) simple USB cable repeatedly un- / plugged when the WD HD TV to the USB hard drive recognition accesses (USB LED starts flashing), possibly also USB port swap 1 and 2 and another USB drive (that works) in parallel with infected [sounds much like trial and error, but is such that it worked in the end]
Keep order, at least until the first recognition:
a) WD HD TV switch
b) hard drive to connect power (if it has separate adapter)
c) Now connect only USB cable
d) if the drive is detected once, you can also WD HD TV off and when you turn it will be detected again
ii) The firmware should be at least> = 1:02:07 to be (allegedly was with this solved a problem with recognition of disks> 500 GB, I found not so clearly described in WD support site or in Release Notes).
Heuristic my part: event. fixes the pure process of firmware flash on the board recognition problem, because it is a kind of 'will reset'gemacht ...
take iii) shorter USB cable that can never hurt
iv) hard drive always clean on the PC under Windows parted: HW eject, or with WD Drive Manager ".. Safely Remove Supposedly (according to English WD Support page) is otherwise" 1 bit is set, "which causes the WD HD TV, the drive to ignore
v defragment) Hard Drive
vi) large disk with 1 TB in mind. 2 NTFS Pari TION
8) Supplement dated 08.12.2012
a) WD TV HD Media Player still without problems in continuous use
b) possess the meantime also the successor model WD TV Live, which is also highly recommended
(Same advantages, fixes some disadvantages)
+ Ethernet connection
+ DTS sound
+ Dolby TrueHD5.1
+ Hard drive to the USB port recognition problems no longer occurred
+ H.264 codec: also [email protected] works; also 16 reframes (WD TV can only [email protected] )
+ HDD file system: even ext2, ext3, ext4, and file management
- VOB / ISO DVD menus are still not controlled; Images must wear ending .iso; no BUP and IFO files
