Customer Review

Introduction:

I could already test so some Wikos and use best of all ages, especially the Wiko Darkside.
Looking at the data sheet, the Wiko Wax in the sense something very special, because it other strengths comes as his brothers (eg a powerful quad-core CPU by Nvidia, memory expansion, replaceable battery and especially LTE) for the other page as well as other advantages not on board (for example, dual SIM capabilities, gesture control, automatic switching on and off, profiles) that "a Wiko" so far (almost without exception) were distinguished.
These points I would like to illuminate course precisely during the test report. After all, so much is already betrayed: The price performance ratio, the Wiko has always excelled, is also at Wiko Wax very good!

As always, however, we begin, of course, with the most important facts at a glance:

- NVIDIA Tegra 4i quad-core processor with 1.7 GHz per core
- 1GB RAM
- IPS screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 with HD resolution (1280 x 720) = 315pp
- Android 4.3
- No dual SIM capability!
- 8MP back cam, 5MP front cam, also still full HD video recording
- Data Connection: 4G: Band 07.03.20 DD800 / 1800/2600 - These are the download theoretical 100 Mbit / s and upload speed 50 Mbit / s
HSPA + with 21MBit / s / 3G + / 3G WCDMA 900/1900/2100 MHz, 2G GSM / GPRS / EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
- Weight: 119g, only 8.8mm thin
- Changeable battery with 2000mAh
- 4GB internal memory, expandable with micro SD up to 32GB, as well as USB OTG-capable, ie the possibility of all sorts of USB accessories, such as keyboard and of course especially USB sticks to connect)
- 3,5mm jack connector and Benachrichtungs LED with two colors (red and green)
- Available device colors: now besides white and black also turquoise and coral (red)
- RRP: 199 Euro

Scope of supply: The Wiko Wax, an in-ear headset with different earplug sizes, a micro-USB cable, which is as a charger and data cables together with the power supply. In addition, a quick start guide and a SIM Card Adapter for nano- to micro-SIM, but also a larger, to use its micro-SIM, if necessary in a device with a "normal" SIM card size (mini-SIM) can.

General:

For several weeks the Wiko Wax was my faithful companion. And in these days throughout crystallized out quite fast, which I like very well, which is fine and which I like less. I tested the Wiko Wax Version 8, which is the at this time (late August 2014) updated version which has been updated a few days ago. This minor bugs have been fixed and / or improved eg unlocking the screen. As with other devices Wiko continuously works on improving its equipment and bringing in different distances smaller and more updates. Great!

Quick Overview:

- LESS WELL:
I want to put the cart before the horse this case times from behind and start with the things that - less well-liked - me personally. Much of it is for sure - how many times in life - even taste or habituation thing:

- From my Wiko Darkside and by many other models of Wiko I 'audio profile' and have used this popular venue. This could be configured under "Settings" and quickly selected using the drop-down menu. This no longer exists at the Wiko Wax. Sure, you can turn the sound off relatively quickly over the volume rocker (by him to Vibrate or zero shuts down)., But really fast is no longer the It is also clear that one can fix after all quite well by widgets.
However, this feature is no longer just supplied innately.

- Also I lack a "LTE only" mode in the network settings, which allows me to leave the smartphone remain despite relatively poor reception in LTE mode having to use instead of the much slower, but it is receiving stronger EDGE. A look into the grid shows that the well has not yet work with many devices and often even with root. Thus, one can probably not be blamed Wiko.
Use can the Wiko Wax certainly attest that long tried to keep the LTE network and not immediately replaced, but there were just so few cases in the trial period, in which I would rather have chosen even if I permanently wants to use LTE or not.

- I do not have dual SIM capability to every nook and cranny. Once we have the possibility to have more than one network, one used and uses this feature active (eg the fact that just people with O2 Flat on SIM 2 [O2 SIM] call while talking to himself about the one in Allnetflat Tray1 leads), then you want it no longer really miss. That may be unfair because the standard up to date continue to "A device, a SIM" is, but at Wiko has now once another standard developed which therefore must be included in the evaluation.

Ø Average
Let us leave to the things that are perhaps not optimally solved and / or according to taste the vote up or down knocking out:

o The speaker on the back is perfectly fine in this price range. He has a good, average volume and a decent sound. However, it is when one puts the phone with his back to the table, quite quietly, because he unfortunately mounted on the back, and no small "nipple" as is provided in some other Wikos that would ensure that the sound escape can. Here Wiko has been shown in other devices that they can do it better (eg the Highway).

o Internally installed only 4GB memory, of which some are less useful than 2.5GB. This is enough to start with. A memory card is definitely mandatory if you want to use something more than just telephony and SMS / Messenger.

o The famous gesture control is missing as well as NFC. Last was not yet installed in any Wiko device Erstgenanntes but almost standard. By using the gesture control could create screenshots, unlock the phone contact, contacts who call are displayed on the screen by simply holding the device to your ear, the phone mute by turning over, etc., etc..! Some of the features I liked to use, although I must admit that I did that at the beginning more than at the end.

o Battery performance is difficult to describe. The reason is that Wiko has built a power saving mode that works really good, but also has great impact on the operation of the device. Ie in short: If you want to long term, is the (somewhat) at the expense of performance, you want to power, the battery lasts (with "normal usage" *) a maximum of one day. I go to an extra point in more detail on the topic of "battery life / Standby / Performance" field.

o Unfortunately, the otherwise supplied innately possibility has been eliminated, the unit automatically off at a specified starting point and to turn it back on later. Pity!

o By using plastic, the device is very easy. While it is well made, but seems not to such a high quality as other Wiko devices (Highway, Stairway, Darkside, Getaway). However, this is a criticism on a high level, because the workmanship is good. No creaking, good gaps. More on this under "processing / haptics".

* Normal use: Shorter calls, some surfing, some reading, some messages, e-mail retrieval at longer intervals, listen to music, watch videos shorter.

+ CONVENIENTLY
And last but not least in this Quick Overview Now the points that have liked me to very good:

+ The built GPS is great. It is found quickly and is very accurate. This is really fun!

+ The NVIDIA Tegra 4i quad-core processor with 1.7 GHz per core, the Wiko has installed the first company in a smartphone, has a whole lot of power. (For more information see "Power") All major 3D games were so smooth and playable. Even in everyday use no stuttering has been made. Along with the sleek Android operating system (with virtually no bloatware) is a great combination.

+ Call quality is good, after the recent update all the more. One understands his opponent clearly and is well understood. The earpiece volume is also good.

+ The screen is definitely one of the highlights in this price range with its 315ppi, so a resolution of 1280 x 720 to 4.7 inches. Of course, he comes from the color reproduction is not to devices that cost three times, zoom, but you can actually him "good" call. The viewing angle is very good, he is in the sunlight still neat to read and HD resolution is quite sufficient. Individual pixels are of course to see any. He is also not protected with plastic, but with Gorilla Glass 2 Wonderful!

+ A notification LED is installed. This is located in the speaker cutout, which is a bit unusual at first, but certainly makes sense, because it is so clear even while Flipcover closed. Good thought along!

+ I'm a huge fan of the startup and shutdown animation (like turning off an old TVs). Sure, a little thing, but has what. ;-)

+ The battery is replaceable and therefore you when you can buy replacement batteries, never go without electricity.

+ The internal memory is expandable with micro-SD's. Up to 32GB can you grab this, in some cases, should also have 64GB works impeccably. I can not say what brand were those, however, from my own experience.

+ Both cameras take good pictures. The 8MP on the back are really good at a reasonable light on the front and wait at least 5MP on Selfie friends. ;-) Addition, video recording in Full-HD is possible.
More to the cam and sample photos can be found under "Camera".

+ LTE: What can you say? If you have used it first, do not want to miss one there. This speed, this access times are just great. And if I can start a video in a few seconds or a great app Download times just fix, that has something special. I will expand the test "data connections" with a further benchmarks. But in a nutshell: The Wiko Wax you can actually be on the move with high-speed Internet.

-> (Intermediate) -Conclusion: The user gets 199 euros for a well-made, visually pretty, powerful phone that boasts an interchangeable battery, addable memory and perfect GPS and thanks to LTE and Nvidia 1.7GHz quad-core processor pure speed in all areas and for all activities brings.
Will be without the common Wiko Fan on the dual SIM capability and cherished, minor features, the Wiko has donated other devices.
Those looking so a "normal", very in all respects very fast and especially effective smartphone with a good screen and LTE can at Wiko Wax strike without hesitation.

A detailed look at selected points:

Processing / Design

If you are used to from their own 5.7 inch device and everything else goes to> 5 inches, you are pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the 4.7 inches can be in your hand or pocket when Wiko Wax. This feeling is supported by a weight of only 119 grams. Nice and light, this unit, a feeling that on the other hand also leads but that it is just not quite as high feels like his colleagues (eg, the Dark Night), which rely on Aluelemente or glass.
Altogether that makes nothing but because the device is well made despite plastic materials and no creaks with replaceable battery cover or really stand out for large gaps. No, we have a compact, lightweight piece of smartphone in hand.
The power button is located on the right side in an easily accessible height, the volume rocker can also be found on the right, just above it.
Visually, the Wiko Wax is clearly inspired by the HTC One with his down-contrasting color to the main color of the device matching part and silver border. The reverse, ie the battery cover is kept in the same color as the bottom part just mentioned, that is white / silver, black, red or turquoise, held.
Speakers on front and back are embedded into the device, only the back-up-centrally mounted camera lens protrudes a tiny piece so that the device is not very evenly seated on the table.
Two "WIKO" lettering adorn the unit, one at the front top, one on the battery cover in the middle.
I like the device Optic really good, it might be a little harder for my feeling.

>>> Power and battery

With its 1.7GHz quad core processor from Nvidia, the Wax masters any given task with ease. In AntutuX benchmark it comes, for example, more than 26,000 points and is thus on a par with the Galaxy S4. In Quadrant benchmark it comes to over 9000 points. Who needs more values of benchmarks, like let you know. It remains that the real performance, that is, those really in the daily use of the device displays in the setting "maximum power" is really outstanding. All lavish games that I've tried, all comprehensive Apps mastered the instrument. And the normal menu speed with which even top devices, such as Samsung or LG have S4 G3 problems is absolutely smooth. There is no stuttering, no pauses.

It is exciting but to look more closely at the new mode "Power Save". Here Wiko allows the user the choice to turn down the processor, ie to use fewer cores and / or to cap the maximum frequency, but also to limit to a maximum of 30FPS Apps. These settings do have a major impact on performance and battery life. If you compare the battery life at maximum power with the restrikivsten in power saving measure, you may find that they almost doubled. Example: If you leave the unit to full power run the Battery test, considers it a bit more than 2.5 hours. In complex games like Asphalt 8 the gaming experience is so well within 3 - 3.5 hours past. Leaving the same test but in mode "Conserving Battery Power" run, to get to almost 5 hours to the device switches off. Asphalt 8 would be so safe around six hours to play. However, the game itself does not then so much fun because it has stopped running completely smoothly and is limited to 30FPS. But simpler games are still fun.
What was, however, interestingly became clear that the slider in the middle, so to "compensate" fairly good performance value in games and apps and brings a great runtime at full load. Here the test brings namely almost 4.5 hours out to empty If the battery.
Benchmarks with "compensation" or "Save" will be AntutuX then the way in the range of 14,000 or 12,000 points, so quite yet in areas of middle-class smartphones.

So whoever wants to use most effectively the device, it turns on "save" or even better "balance", benefiting from good to decent pace with everyday tasks and screwed the controller for complex games to "maximize performance" high in case of need.

>>> Traffic / Connectivity

Wi-Fi b / g / n is on board and sparking a good average through the apartment. The reception is as good as other comparable devices. At all critical points in the apartment the wax holding his wireless receiver and does its job well.

GPS is - as already described above - found incredibly fast, in a few seconds, sometimes faster ;-) and also still is extremely accurate. I was very pleased. Thus, the Wiko Wax can also easily for navigation purposes, use Geocaching or other tasks.

The biggest, newest and most interesting points is of course the built-in LTE: My T-Mobile card was throttled unfortunately at 7.2Mbit / s, so that the Wiko Wax just laughed and the pointer in Speedtest brought all the way, but I switched Vodafone kindly also LTE-free and so I can here, after all, to surf 42,2Mbit / s. And that makes the Wiko Wax also problems. Am Rhein, a speed test resulted in moderate reception after all the values DL 26,6Mb / s and UL 4,91Mb / s with an access time of 59ms.
With all of my tests, I was completely satisfied.
Just a pity that there is no LTE-only mode, but you can only choose between 2G, 3G, 2G / 3G and GSM / WCDMA / LTE.
Otherwise, the values were top and the reception of Wax 'in the upper average.

>>> Camera

The bare facts sound good (eight megapixels on the back) and very good (five megapixel on the front). But as the numbers is so, particularly in cameras that pure megapixel say yes little about the picture quality. That's why I let a few pictures speak and tell of my experiences:

[Not allowed at Amazon - might I add that in the gallery above]

All photos were created with the default settings and using the autofocus. Especially with good and average light conditions makes the main camera really good pictures for a smartphone. In low light, there is the classic fast noise.

The settings of the camera are easily accessible, it is enough a long press on the display when the cam is activated. A fine thing. Even though at the beginning some getting used to, because you quickly select things that you wanted to look at first.
Of course there are different shooting modes, such as face detection, HDR, Panorama, etc. can be quickly with active camera over an icon to flash on and off or to automatic and switch between the two cameras and also between video or photo recording.

>>>

Rarely I found it so hard to evaluate this device. And for this reason that so few quasi-unique selling points of Wiko omitted, the previous test devices have been from the start look good. Of course there would be especially the dual SIM capability, which was implemented excellently. This point is eliminated. Just missing other cherished features, such as the (now [eg when HIGHWAY]) configurable key illumination below the display, the gesture control, which for example. Suitable for quick calls that adjustable and quickly via the drop-down menu selectable profiles, automated A - on and off as well as other nice, useful little things.
Ultimately, it thus has soberly considered only with an ordinary mobile phone / smartphone to do. Nevertheless deserves this attention and also a good rating, because it comes with (on average) less than 200 euros is just very cheap and this brings a lot of power (s) with it.
Since a very great GPS would be: fast, precise. As would be LTE, which is still very rare in this price range. Surfing via LTE goes quickly and smoothly by hand. There would be a clean processing including an attractive design and good display. And there would be a new Nvidia quad-core processor, which brings a whole lot of power for games and applications with its 1.7GHz per core.
There are also other small features that have paid off, for example. The new power-saving mode, but has a great effect, the fact that an Android OS is delivered, that is not plastered with foreign apps. Last should be noted that a memory expansion via microSD is possible and that the battery can also be replaced by the user.
All this makes the Wiko Wax definitely a good smartphone that offers a great price performance value. - Only the dual SIM capability is missing painful to me.
