Customer Review

Since no updates were offered more for my Android tablet, a new tablet was needed. Not only the lack of updates were a problem, and the lack of connections brought me back to despair. There is on the Android platform just a few of the programs that I use every day and would like to have on the go in public transportation there. Besides, I still use a sample software in conjunction with my digital piano. The operation of these programs via a touchscreen, I imagined as a special highlight.

So far, I have been working with a Lenovo T520 with an i5 processor, 256GB SSD and 4GB of RAM. With more than 3 kg weight this is only suitable for traveling. The notebook comes with me mainly as a MIDI sequencer for my digital piano, the financial management, for video and image processing, to learning, not least as office and surf computers used.
Thus, should a supplement for my Tablet ago, which should also take over functions of my notebook, ideally all of them. The idea of being able to use my sample software on a handy tablet on the music stand was, wound up the difference.

If even a tablet, why not equal a Convertible with keyboard and removable tablet unit?
The answer is not difficult: Easy to use in public transport, convenient transportation in the backpack, since much lighter than my Lenovo notebook and use at home on the couch as a media player for my TV or projector without even awkward coupling a Bluetooth keyboard ,

I have a lot of research on Convertibles and I quickly realized that powerful devices cost a small fortune. Whether Microsoft Surface Pro 3, Lenovo Yoga 2 or 3 or the Dell Inspiron 7000. It is almost always from 800 EUR upwards thereby. Nevertheless, most of the expensive devices to connectivity is lacking. Usually there is only one USB port that is also often used for charging. I still do not understand why many see this as an advantage. Mir is a separate closing time as with conventional notebooks important since the loading over most of goes much faster than via the USB port. Only the use of a mobile power bank is conceivable as an argument. Only extra weight is now reconnected.

Because of my limited budget of a maximum of 400 EUR I ordered first the Acer Switch 10 with 64GB eMMC in the FullHD version for about 350 EUR. As luck would have it sometimes, I found out that it just also gave a convertible on offer at Aldi. The Medion Akoya P2214T also cost only 350 EUR, but had to offer at first glance better equipment. So I marched to Aldi, got me one device, although the offer existed for some time. It seems the days when you had to set up a tent on the eve at Aldi and stay to get a device that is long gone.
So it happened that I had to be one of the last weekends both devices on the table, which is enough opportunity to compare them.

The comparison is based on the identical price levels! An Acer Switch with 11 FHD display naturally costs significantly more than the Convertible of Medion. There will therefore involve: Where can I get more for the same money?

Scope of supply:
==========

When Acer switch 10 of the scope of supply is limited to the bare minimum. Power supply and various information sheets are available. In addition, there is a license for Office 365 for 1 year. A recovery CD or the like are nowhere.

Medion is much more generous here. In addition to the device itself and the power supply, there is a very detailed manual, in which the operator, including those of Windows 8 will be explained very extensive and exemplary in the special. The blue adapter cable is used to connect normal USB devices to the Micro-USB port on the tablet unit. In addition, both a recovery CD as well as an application and support CD are included. At the daily cleaning Medion has also thought and laid a microfiber cloth in the box.
Only the annual license for Office 365 is missing. This gives only a trial version for 30 days. Instead, you get the comprehensive package for video, music and image editing CyberLink Media Suite 11, comparable to the Nero products. This is a full version without subscription for 1 year, which can thus be used for life.

From my perspective, here the Akoya P2214T scores with the better delivery against the Acer Switch 10 with 1: 0th

Specifications and performance:
========================

In the ordered by me version of Acer Switch 10 strikes an atom Z3735F with a quad-core (1.30 GHz, up to 1.83 GHz, 2MB cache). There are 2 GB DDR RAM and a 64GB eMMC with. The 10.1 inch FullHD IPS display has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and has a digitizer to control with an active stylus. The built-in tablet battery unit holds about 6000 mAh and to do his service 8 hours. The nachgewogene of my total weight is 1080 grams, of which 566 grams on the tablet unit. For Video Chat, a 2 MP camera on the front is attached. The operating system is Windows 8.1 comes in the 32-bit version is used.

We come to the Medion Akoya P2214T. Here tinkers an Intel Celeron N2940 1.83GHz and 2.23 GHz Turbo. He is assisted by 4 GB DDR RAM. The eMMC includes 64 GB of storage and the Tastaturdock is an additional hard disk from Hitachi with 500 GB storage included. The 11.6-inch Full HD IPS display from AU Optronics has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. There is both a battery pack in the tablet unit (about 3100 mAh), as well as a battery in Tastaturdock (3600 mAh). The total running time is given as 10 hours, which then mathematically account for the tablet unit 4,5 hours. It is also installed Windows 8.1, but here in the 64 bit version. The remeasured weight of the tablet unit is approximately 710 grams, total weighs the Convertible by Medion about 1600 grams.

As you can see, the Medion P2214T is clearly better equipped: On the positive side can be found for any of the processor. Although both are based on the Bay Trail platform but comes N2940 significantly better in all benchmarks away, but it also needs more than twice the energy. The battery life is expected to be similar in both models, however, is in the tablet unit of P2214T probably considerably less than the Acer Switch 10, which has just installed a single battery, which is located but in the tablet unit (logically). Likewise, a positive note that the P2214T a 64 bit operating system is installed. But you should also not overstate the because the 64 bits become noticeable only when more than 4GB of memory and 64-bit applications. The 500GB hard drive is another plus point. When Acer switch 10 there is the even, but it costs extra charge.

Talk to the lower weight and more compact dimensions for the Acer Switch 10. This can be done using an active stylus, which is equipped with 256 pressure levels and thus enables more accurate input, as with capacitive stylus that comes with the Medion P2214T.

Also, in the aspect of technical data is the point at which it is now P2214T and 2: 0
The battery capacity will not appear anywhere at Medion P2214T, so I had my tool HWiINFO64 concerned with can be read directly from the hardware specifications.

Often is used in connection with the drives for these devices, the term SSD. This is simply false because EMMCs can only conditionally compare SSDs. SSDs have low access times and have a very high data throughput. eMMC memory are partially much slower here. Your data throughput is not as high as that of an SSD by far. The access times are, however, at a similar level and are well below those of conventional hard drives, so that do not very serious noticeable in daily work the differences for use with an SSD, unless you use very memory-intensive programs, the large amounts of data need.

Workmanship and design:
==========================

The Acer Switch 10 is very well made and there are no visible gaps. The aluminum surface the back looks classy and the keyboard is despite its small size and closely spaced buttons to operate very well and with a pleasant pressure point. The magnetic docking mechanism works very reliably.

Initial concerns that connection could break loose during loading something were quickly dispelled. One can switch Acer 10 lift to the tablet unit without disengages the mechanism. The only drawback: If you tilt the screen too far back, the whole unit tilts away backwards. A somewhat better weight distribution would have been desirable.
In the workmanship the Medion P2214T can not keep up.

The device is made entirely of plastic. The Dockmechanismus is not as trustworthy as the Acer switch 10. Instead of a magnetic lock sets Medion on a plug-in contact with slider to loosen and lock. The used tablet unit wobbles in the docked state to the touch due to design something back and forth. The back of the tablet is pretty soggy, uneven and can also push something. With a warranty of 3 years Medion seems to be convinced in any case of the long-term quality of the product.
The keyboard is indeed greater than the Acer Switch 10, but does not have as good tactile feedback and are in firmer pressure a few millimeters after. This was criticized in many tests, but the cause nobody wanted to probably find out. In fact, it is because at the corners and rubber feet are installed so the unit hangs in the middle literally in the air. After I had fixed in the middle up and down an equally thick adhesive pad, to the handling of the keyboard improved noticeably.
Still, in all, the Acer Switch 10 is better processed and so it is now 2: 1.

Equipment and connectivity:
=======================

Here the Akoya P2214T shines with features that you hardly find even in much more expensive models. The Wi-Fi connection is made with the new AC-Standard. Bluetooth 4.0 is of course also available. For the connection of external devices are in the keyboard unit 2 USB 2.0 ports and in the tablet unit a microUSB 3.0 port available. The mini-HDMI connector in the tablet unit provides the connection to the domestic LCD TV. The internal flash memory can be expanded via the micro-SD card reader in the tablet unit to another 64 GB.

To load equal to 2 sockets are available. One in the tablet unit which is visible only when ausgedocktem Tablet, and on the side, next to the USB ports on the keyboard unit.

When Acer Switch 10 connectivity does not look quite as lush. The keyboard unit there is only one USB 2.0 port and 2 USB port to USB 3.0 specification can be found in the form of a micro-USB port on the tablet unit.
Even when Acer has its own charging socket. To connect to the TV, a mini-HDMI jack is integrated in the tablet unit. The WLAN interface provides nevertheless still the current n-standard and Bluetooth 4.0 is mandatory.

Here was revealed the first real weakness of the Acer Switch 10: After I had placed side by side, both devices showed very obvious that the Medion P2214T (left) has a much better reception strength. But really surprised and excited me the quality of reception on my nearest HotSpot: The signal strength to display was here right away 80% -100%. I could hardly believe, but after a few hours surfing the net, I realized it's really like that. No crashes and a much faster page loading should be proof enough. The Acer Switch 10 managed here just 40% and had problems permanently to maintain the connection at all upright.

Both devices have a built-in headphone and microphone input via a 3.5 mm jack.

Many see their own charging sockets as a disadvantage and would want to charge via a USB port. So you could also use a Power Bank to go freshen up the battery.

Although the P2214T only has a USB port more, it can decide whether you still need an extra stroke. In connection with the considerable improvement in WLAN connectivity the point here goes back to the Medion device: 3: 1.

Display and touchscreen:
===================

Both displays provide color from very natural and the viewing angle stability is IPS panel typically very good. Even if all of the page looks sure to take the brightness and contrast from little. The Acer display is in my view a bit darker.
Although not even included in the very expensive equipment such as the Lenovo Pro series, has the display of the switch 10 a digitizer for use with an active stylus. This I had also ordered and tested.

The use of both the touch screen with your finger works perfectly. Both displays also respond reliably to the touch in the peripheral areas.

Whether the display of P2214T how the Acer Switch 10, consists of the Gorilla glass, I can not judge. The reference to the thin protective mat between keyboard and display, insert it necessarily at each closing, to prevent damage to the display, rather testifies to the contrary. One should use it during transport in a backpack or the like so far as possible. There are other manufacturers already cases in which the display was scratched by the keys in the closed state.
Otherwise, there is in both models up to the size of any differences.

Also reflected both displays, unfortunately, like most others of their kind. This one must live well. Therefore the brightness is relatively high adjustable so that you can compensate for this drawback outdoors reasonably.

The larger display in Medion P2214T holds the digitizer Acer contrary. Therefore, I forgive here a draw: 4:. 2

Service
========

When operating both devices give nothing. Both use Windows 8.1. When Acer Switch 10 can be still an active stylus for about 40 EUR rebuy. This facilitates operation. Handwritten notes are also possible. I could not make friends with it compared to writing on ordinary paper. When P2214T there is a capacitive, passive stylus, which was inexplicably housed in the keyboard unit (What did they thereby merely meant?) And the service also facilitates enormously.

Handwritten notes are therefore also possible, but not as accurate as with the active stylus Acer Switch 10th
The keyboard is divided sinnig both devices. With both a numeric keypad missing. Too bad. The quality of the P2214T is bad, but the keyboard is larger, so that me this keyboard subjectively still better like.
The undocking the tablet is a little more complicated when Medion device. You must first press the slide switch to the side and can then take the tablet out of the holder. The onset is it much easier, because you have it just plugging. When Acer switch 10 that is handled better, but it takes some practice until you find the right position for docking, otherwise pull the magnets the tablet in the wrong position.

The touchpad is equivalent for both devices in my view. Both possess a multi-touchpad with gesture control and I could see no major differences or shortcomings in the operation.

Because you can use both tablet units completely independently, the use of a USB / HDMI monitor switcher with a full desktop keyboard and an external monitor is not a problem. So for example, I use at home often only the tablet, which is connected via a USB hub on my USB keyboard and USB HDMI monitor switch.

So there is also here in a draw: 5: 3

Variability:
========

Here we are in the domain of Convertibles. It should be usable in all possible positions.
None of the devices has a 360 ° hinge. Nevertheless, the switch 10 with keyboard unit can use as a Tablet: You put the display and sets it offset by 180 ° again. After collapsing the display is on the top. In public transport is very convenient as you do not remove and stow the keyboard unit in tablet mode. For this, the tent mode is also possible, place it with folded back to keyboard.

The P2214T is also very flexible. The hinge provides at least 300 degrees, so that the tent mode can also be used without undocking. Since the display image in the docked state does not automatically rotate, you have to do this manually using the function keys. The effect is the same, only has the image so already the correct position.

Since the processing unit and the main ports, are both devices in the tablet unit, it can be used completely independently. Of course, the separate hard disk can then no longer use, which is why you should install it and no programs that you want to use in each mode.

Here I like the Acer Switch 10 bit better and wins his next point: 5:. 4

Sound:
=====

The Speaker of the Medion Akoya P2214T located down the tablet unit, the left and right on the outside.
The sound is far better than expected and enough to watch movies from. But a voluminous bass reproduction you should not expect. With the Dolby button on top of tablet unit to the various sound modes such as music or movie playback can be set.

The Speaker of the switch 10 are directed to the front and sound as good as the whole of the Medion Convertibles. Again, can we expect any impressive bass response.

Therefore I have also no clear favorite: 6:. 5

Battery life
===========

With the Acer Switch 10 I was able to work 6 hours continuously until the battery was exhausted.
When Medion P2214T the matter is somewhat more complicated. After the first charge, I took advantage of the Medion permanently with some breaks, with full wireless connectivity for downloads, photo editing, copying data, installing software, etc. In this case, the battery lasted through 8 hours with one of the two batteries (of the keyboard -dock with no. 2 in), adopted after 5 hours. Thus it is in battery no. 1 to the in the tablet unit. This makes sense as well, so you can undock the tablet unit until the end. The battery in the tablet unit is thus only discharged when the battery is fully drained in the keyboard dock. So it works the other way: When you load the tablet battery is first charged. Since Medion has really thought along and the subject battery solved sent.

Since 2 batteries are installed, the unit is in tablet mode can use less time than the switch 10. After about 3 to 4 hours continuous operation on surfing the net, the battery was discharged. I use the Tablet offline when I use my example Sampler on digital piano, a little more than 4 hours are possible. Fortunately, you can charge the battery in the tablet unit via an additional charging socket therein, which due to a single battery is the normal state when Acer Switch 10.
Both batteries also load during operation, which is not always granted. There are also mobile devices, their batteries continue to discharge during operation when connected to a charger.

Here is difficult to review. The 2nd battery in P2214T has advantages and disadvantages. The total running time is 2 hours later than the Medion Convertible, for the duration in Tablet mode is significantly lower. I can not decide. Therefore: 7:. 6

Warranty and Support
=================

When I was allowed to try Acer with another notebook support and was very pleased. A failed disk is replaced within a few days. There is a normal landline number for problem cases in the warranty. In addition, Acer offers a 0900 number for 99 cent / per minute premium support. The warranty period is 24 months, as is required by law.

The Medion Akoya P2214T has a warranty of 36 months and you can return it within 30 days without stating reasons in the Aldi supermarket. The telephone support is chargeable with 14 cents per minute, which I've handled all my warranty case online.

Given the better warranty conditions: 8:. 6

Conclusion
====

The Acer Switch 10 is a very well made with a good Convertible, viewing angle stable display, which even has a digitizer for use with an active stylus. It is compared with the Medion device very light and handy.

In my view, the price-performance ratio, however, the Medion device is better. You get here a much leistungsstärkerers Convertible for the same price, with a few drawbacks in the processing. In addition, wireless connectivity is the Acer Switch 10 clearly worse and gave me did not like. That was the main reason why I have ultimately sent back and in the evaluation may depart a star. Who does not disturb and its WLAN router always has in the immediate vicinity, of course, gets the Acer switch 10 a recommendable Convertible, which is very well made and compact.
