Sophie lives

USA - 1947. The 22 year old Stingo (Peter MacNicol), who grew up in the southern United States, reached at the beginning of the film New York - Brooklyn, he finds an apartment and "discovered" the living above him pair; Sophie Zawistowska (Meryl Streep) and Nathan Landau (Kevin Kline).

Stingo want to become a writer, the developing friendship with Sophie and Nathan broadens the horizons of the young man.

The focus of the action, however, is not Stingo, it is rather an observer and reporter of the complicated and sometimes self-destructive relationship of its neighbors, where the main interest is focused on Sophie out. What Sophie until her only a few months previous entry experienced and survived in the USA? Flashbacks reveal the course of the film some dark secret, provide the viewer impressive / shocking insights into the human abyss.

Meryl Streep received for this film the 1983 Oscar for best actress - and rightly so!
