Preliminary my surroundings
- Alice router
- Gigabit Switch
- Webcam, Mac mini, Win7 notebook, DIR-855 (5GHz wireless)
- Samsung UE46D7090 TV (Summer 2012)
Assembling NAS:
The assembly was painless, 2 hard drives (WD30EFRX - Western Digital RED each with 3TB). Power supply, connect Ethernet, pressed the start button - that's it. The disks were detected correctly.
Noise / fan:
The built-in fan provides a bit "puny" from. But as he currently makes little noise with me, that's perfectly OK It was so far mostly in the "low" speed, less likely "means". The already reported noise problems I could not confirm with my model. I do not think this is entirely due to my presbycusis. Rather, I suspect large variations in the series.
Configuration:
The NAS was to be found immediately in the network with the included tool. I have assigned a fixed IP address and was able to access via the Web configuration interface. From the surface I'm not so excited. It is slow. (Chill) needs the surface after each setup several seconds for the next entry to be ready. Are accessed externally (via Internet) to the configuration interface to, the effect even more (data rate probably) will. Then I would be a simpler (like without images) Surface prefer that it not so react slowly. The surface is a little "playful". Many actions (eg Saving ....) will get a popup with the note that has been saved. Unfortunately, this can not be closed by "Enter" or some other button, but be clicked away with the mouse. In sum for the Web interface maybe a quarter point deduction, but I will use it only in the Startpahase often, then it runs hopefully without that I need to use the surface.
Disk Configuration:
My plan was generally to run with RAID1 "everything". The data from Time Machine to the NAS should be placed - an external FP less. In addition I wanted to create two volumes (comparable two partitions). At this point I had the first restriction. After I had about 2.2TB configured with RAID1, me the remaining space was offered exclusively as JBOD, that this would not be protected from the failure of a FP. So I had to configure the entire disks as RAID1 and make the allocation of different tasks via network shares and quotas. This also works, but each share in the network with the total available storage space is displayed.
User Management / Quotas:
Setting up multiple users and the assignment of the write / read access was done after a few minutes. Permissions on groups I have not needed, so no Ausage. When the quotas I have discovered a minor problem. If a user "unlimited" associated, so will appear in the overview as User 0MB. Even putting on 2200000MB had then not mean that the true value under Destroyed.
Integrating Time_Machine:
For Time Machine, I had created a separate user with private Paswort. Currently is with 1kb / s copied but ichvermute a config problem and no mistake.
DLNA - Media Server:
The configuration was me first a mystery, until I found out that the DLNA Media Server can be found under the heading "UPnP" under application ManagementRelated configuration. The better way to represent for those users who are not so firm in the area, eventually advertised in the product descriptions with DLNA. Then I reach (Samsung televisions) on the NAS to be offered to me by music and all of the folders with photos. That's better! The structure of the archive took time, but that was because of the amount of data. My Samsung TV has however this media archive found after restarting the NAS. The display or the structure which are folders / music / images for playback on televisions, each takes a different length, on iTunes with over 100 folders my TV needed minutes - rather not suitable for everyday use, especially since a second change in the each folder again needs this for a long time. But this is probably not attributable to the NAS. The installation of another media server may be a possibility that has to make the unsuspecting user first.
Linking to mydlink:
So far I had involved my webcam in mydlink. Since it was not so important to me, whether other people ev. Can daily. But I wanted then access my Datenvon everywhere.
A) Although the access via mydlink done via https, but. I believe still weaknesses in the security Once the device is integrated into mydlink, so can be read and write access to all data. The configured users are bypassed. There is also no timeout. That is when my rating a full point deduction!
B) under "change date / time" displays the date on which the data was copied to the NAS. Now all data will be displayed with "08.02.2013", which is completely useless. When accessing via the explorer urspüngliche storage date is displayed (as .....). After my smattering of knowledge that is related to the Samba server, but because the Explorer the modification date and the creation date can be displayed at the point the surface of mydlink unusable. The column width can not be changed, so there are problems with me to keep a long filename auseiander. The purpose of the "Type" column has not really opened up to me. Considering that the "private cloud" is touted, and the surface but has some flaws, there by my side even half a point deduction.
C) Because of the above shortcomings I had decided not to use the NAS in the cloud, but to access my data using SFTP or otherwise. Quick button to remove (from the cloud) pressed for it to the warning "By removing the device, all related to the mydlink device functions are removed and all of the device is reset to factory default settings." Because of my security concerns I have this carried out anyway. All settings were reset, but the data itself still existed, had it "only" UPnP, users, shares, quotas, DynDNS, FTP, ... to be reconfigured. In addition, I could no longer access in mydlink on my webcam after removing my NAS - had but given after three hours ???
SMB / WebDAV:
the integration of the drive (with the corresponding release / user) works over Internet (via "bitte-namen-einrichten.dyndns.org"). It must be open and forwarded to the appropriate port. The security I can not really judge well, but more secure than FTP, it is definitely. Here, the modification date is displayed correctly, not the date on which the data was copied to the NAS.
ftp:
ftp works, but is deactivated again (security!), SFTP runs (yet), but probably lies at my ignorance. (On the occasion, I have found that the Alice router only max 5 redirects can - hmmm, probably not for technical reasons)
My Conclusion:
Maybe I erwarete for the price too much, I had wanted finally for an affordable NAS. The basic functions run solid. Whether I will use it as a media server will prove in practice. Is it possible to mydlink / cloud forego so I would give it 4 stars. Is mydlink / cloud to the user important so I rate it with 2 stars, because there are some shortcomings to me, which are not only annoying.
==> Since only one vote is possible: (only) rated unit in total with 3 stars.
