Despite missing the display to operate the unit via the menu system of the TV is quite simple. The control of the device via the TV remote control (in my case a Philips 3D TV) via HDMI CEC functioned without problems. The picture quality during normal 2D Blu-Ray movies is quite acceptable and sharp.
However, the 3D playback could not convince me. I tested the 3D function with the film "The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey (EAN 051890140562)" you know, currently some players have trouble playing with.
The film starts properly, and also the allocation of frames to each eye is correctly reproduced (In particular the manufacturer Philips has problems here in conjunction with its passive 3D devices). Nevertheless, the Samsung BD-F5500 / EN is not really convincing. The picture looks with fast movements with me often hazy and out of focus. This tires the eyes rather quickly. It appears when the frame rate is quite low. The conversion of the frame rate of 24f / s to 'Auto' could bring no improvement here. Low frame rates can 3D technology lead with passive at a worse image in particular for televisions.
Similarly, the player quite noisy when playing CD / DVD / Blu-ray discs. Like most players will be driven the drive on full revolution when reading the Blu-Ray, which is accompanied by considerable noise. These noises are indeed over the playback slightly lower, but remains clearly audible in a direct comparison with other devices. Especially with silent movie scenes the player-noise is very dominant. Specifically, when the player is on a surface that can serve as a sound body. Even a thick padding could not remedy with me. Who before has to operate the player in a draw or cabinet, should rather refrain from buying, or a high-quality padding of the unit allow to reduce sound transmission.
Unfortunately, I was the instrument, in particular due to the unpleasant blur effects in my test 3D Blu-Ray unconvincing.
