Effective device with quirks

## First start ##
When first starting a wizard runs through, the language, time zone, and third-party apps installed. What apps are one learns only after the installation routine runs. After everything was finished, worked first time nothing. The touchscreen is not responding. By pressing and holding the power button I could force a restart. After that everything worked.

## Android ##
The tablet is not as originally announced 2.2 (Froyo) with Android, but still running Android 2.1 (Eclair). Through various forums, I have found that Archos probably planning a fix later this year (2010) to bring out. The tablet has my not have access to Google's Android Market. Here Archos offers its own AppsLib Market. According to Archos is to be prevented so that installing apps that are not optimized for the tablet / suitable. However, can also be found in this market many apps where you can already see in the comments that they do not run on the device.

## WIFI ##
The wireless device is done quickly and easily (as is the usual of Android). The signal quality can easily keep up with my laptop and is significantly better than that of my Android phones. The browser is ok. But you can also download the better Dolphin Browser from the APPLIB. The surf is surprisingly pleasant. Pages are quick to set up, display errors are rare. The large display you need only rarely to zoom pages. Pages with Flash support the unit (but comes with Froyo). What I was really happy is that the device can access network shares, and even on to the media server. My router provides both available. With the laptop that works wonderfully. The Archos 101 reports that the media server is empty and the network has no approvals - sad. If you want to without WLAN to the Internet via mobile phone can do this with a Bluetooth tethering. A slot for a 3G card or UMTS has not the device.

## Display ##
Although the display at 10.1 "is greater than the iPad (9.7"), the device is surprisingly light and has HD resolution. The problem is that this bar is almost always visible and thus a part of the screen occupies, who like to use other apps. So lines are even at the integrated eBook reader 'Aldiko' characters / cut (depending on the orientation). Some applications can not be used when they sat touch controls exactly where the bar is soft (which happens more often, than I would like). Unfortunately I have no setting found how to fade out the bar.

## Gimmicks ##
The device has an active USB port. So USB flash drive is connected and accessed using the integrated file browser on it. In the directories with pictures I would have liked thumbnails. You can open only one file (one wants to look at pictures from the stick, is the difficult) Mark or more files. If you have selected multiple files but you can not do anything with it. I have the HDMI output have not tried, because my cable missing (I'll catch up and report).

## Harware ##
The battery lasts a surprisingly long time even with intensive use. The connector for the power supply is very loose in the device. In addition, caution is advised because of the plug of the power supply fits perfectly well into the headphone jack. ## USB ##

From time to time - you're surfing the Internet - I write texts in appropriate fields. However, it often happens that I lose by using the arrow keys to focus the field and neither the keyboard nor the mouse can regain the focus. I move the mouse, a mouse pointer appears on the screen. Sometimes the tablet responds to the mouse click. Sometimes a double from emergencies to move the unit to what you want.

## HDMI ##
Now I am in possession of a suitable HDMI cable, I had to test directly. On the pages of Archos some advertising pictures can be seen that suggests a dual output of the video signal (ie on the 101er Tablet can be seen the same picture, like on TV). This is not so in reality. The tablet screen when you activate the TV output black. Thus, the selection of elements is really only useful on a connected mouse. Otherwise, the image is displayed on the TV clean. Videos run equivalent liquid, as on the small display.

## Media server Supplement ##
Meanwhile, I have sometimes even managed to access the media server. The streaming media files to work quite well. However, the access does not always work. Sometimes it helps to close all applications in the background and display the file browser again.

The new I tested functions would raise the overall - if they were all implemented properly and would perform flawlessly. But surfing the keyboard / mouse is less a relief as more agony. And from the HDMI output, I would have hoped for at least a dual output (I have a split output not even expect).

## Conclusion ##
For the price this is a good device. However, it often feels like a beta tester, because some functions are not fully developed or thought through. As coffee tablet, for reading eBooks, surfing the Internet, the tablet is ideal. Especially when you consider that the iPad alternatives, Samsung's Galaxy Tab or the WeTab cost significantly more. I'm going to the Table not return for the month because I hope that Froyo is much better. And perhaps Archos care with numerous firmware updates to the unit.
