I've been thinking a long time about a backup for my Canon EOS 5D Mark III (with many L-lenses).
2. An SLR but I do not really need, because then I would rather take the Great.
For almost 2 years I squint very expensive on the M, the beginning, but now clearly have less than 400 euros.
And I was looking for a camera in the size PowerShot G12, with better image quality and more features.
And when I had unpacked it: Elegant, high-quality ...
Nothing creaks, everything smoothly, a lot of metal hardly plastic.
It is a magnesium die-cast housing with stainless steel reinforcement (Thanks Thomas S.)
The battery cover is thin plastic, or polycarbonate Canon calls it,
which is that of the Great 5D Mark III also like that.
One wishes a little more grip, but it's ok.
The weight is very high for the size.
But now to the point.
As it is brutal compared to the full-size queen made by Canon, and the 7D of an acquaintance.
Sharpness: The 18-55 IS kit M provides at an APS-C sensor noticeably worse results than my
5D Mark III to the nines 24-70 II at ISO 1600 with 6400 comparable, color and contrast of relatively flat, so
in all less crisp, and to significantly more objective error and blurry edges.
The price comparison is a gentle smile. Almost 5000 Euro compete against currently about 350 Euro.
The results speak for themselves, because the 7D was not significantly worse.
With a 18-55 IS from the bar the photos were ... not bad.
The EF-M kit lens is probably felt a little better than his older EF-S brother.
And the sensors provide in principle both 18MP and strong noise,
in which case but the 7D rushes a little less.
Conclusion on image quality: Just like pretty all EOS cameras with APS-C sensor.
Conclusion for kit EF-M: Compared to L-Zoom bad, but then compared
the EF-S counterparts but even more visible. So not a bad idea.
Here I consider a compact camera in the hands, with pretty much every Canon
SLR can keep below the € 1000 mark.
What's more, one via the optional adapter also the whole world of accessories
can be used by EOS. Over 100 Lenses awaiting M.
Update:
Now I have brought the adapter to.
Older lenses "run" somehow ungeschmeidig, recent focus felt faster.
Whether old or new, will find both the sharpness but then good.
Especially good is the EF 40mm 2.8 STM and even better, the EF 100mm 2.8L IS USM Macro.
These two glasses I want to put the EOS M friend very warmly.
With the 100mm the system is still remarkably well in hand, and more well-balanced.
For cost reasons, one catches presumably with the EF 40mm 2.8 STM.
This pancake lens is also considerable macros with a 25mm intermediate ring.
Looks a bit weird: Adapter Ring, intermediate ring, lens (in ring size).
This combination may seem odd, but it is very powerful for little gravel.
Allen EOS M photographers I have the EF-M 22mm 1: 2 STM recommend highly.
The camera is not only a pipsqueak, but the pictures cut even experienced
Canon EOS professionals from the socks! Actually a must buy!
Operation:
Not as fast as with a "classic", but you get used to it pretty quickly.
I often find myself holding the camera on his head, and then look into the void.
There is no viewfinder! The screen does the job.
Professionals and would-be professionals and I would now cry out:
"Should I keep the clippers like a cell phone or smart phone !?"
Answer: YES (and even "unspeakable" with the touch stuff!)
And what can I say, it works, because the display is mistaken brightly at your fingertips.
Brighter than almost any smartphone when the delete button
occupied by the display-boost function.
What's the problem with this: The lousy battery life
Indicating Fortunately even a little more robust than Canon.
I've made in a first test 200 photos plus
about 30 minutes Full HD video made. And a lot of messing around because of Neulust.
The batteries had a bar and was blinking red, probably therefore still some pictures feasible.
Actually, you can say the battery is somehow too quickly.
The solution to this problem: second battery, or better yet buy third battery it!
And even then it can be just to field trips or events.
With the original Canon battery I have never had any problems in 10 years,
and want to place them very close to this expensive but good companions, even if it hurts financially.
Two foreign manufacturers have me gone up in smoke, once even not only literally.
Speed:
Save continuous shooting 5-6 images quickly thereafter about 1 frame per second. No matter what's inside.
So you can shoot for about 1 second, Dan after it is lame.
Fortunately, the buffer is quickly empty, is allowed to release the finger from the trigger.
4 frames per second is enough then even in this circumstance. My power 6 images per page
Autofocus:
We come to the trade press which M has ripped through the air to the point
so it has disappeared from the market in the US, and also in this country did not succeed.

The AF is fast, never takes the camera in the basement more than 1 second to make sharp.

A third of a second, and therefore felt afloat as with most EOS.

If Canon is not totally messed up at the start, it would be the new
"People's Camera" become. A software error broke her neck.
The "sad" story of M in America and Europe led to
that the slightly modified M2 was in this country not even introduced.
Hopefully Canon can come up with something for the M system at Photokina 2014.
