Tales of Symphonia Chronicles - [PlayStation 3] (Video Game)

Customer Review

Tales of Symphonia appeared in 2004 in Europe, then on the GameCube, and has now received an HD remake on PS3 after 10 years. For the connoisseurs and Tales Symphonia veteran the following two points are to switch to the HD version most likely critical to the purchase:
- HD resolution?
- Increased scope?

Although both of them meet, but with slight limitations:
- The resolution is "only" 720p. Although the resolution was screwed up, the graphic display itself has remained completely equal. This expresses itself in really ancient textures and animations. Namco Bandai has anything changed in the graphics, which frankly is not really bad but because the game so retains its old charm. Graphic fetishists should already deal with other games.
- This version of the game is similar to that of 2005 for the PS2, which is exclusively published in Japan and some additional side quests, and new Mystic Artes contains the playable characters. In addition, some new costumes are in the process yet, which is, inter alia, unlock, when there is still a score of Tales of Xillia on the PS3. That was it, unfortunately, but even with the extra content.

Some of the changes and details that struck me so far (and many a perhaps are important):

- The Mystic Artes were not located at that time and therefore had to be set to music for this remake. Amazingly, Namco Bandai can undertake all voice actors from that time again (which I honestly would not have thought possible, finally, the only short passages of about five seconds) and thus you can hear now, for example, call also Kratos "Shining Bind".
However, the sound when Redub was obviously not mixed properly so you can distinguish the new from the old synchronizations based on the volume. The resynchronization is much too low and you have to partially switch off the sound to be able to understand everything. Apart from the Mystic Artes but everything has remained identical.

- All Mystic Artes now have new cut-ins (Anime Faces). These are now multicolored instead monochrome and look more like cut-ins from the newer Tales titles. I liked the old have preferred, but is also a matter of taste.

- The Opening video now corresponds to the Japanese version of 2005. This means that new music and Japanese vocals. Unfortunately for the old Opening music was completely cut out.

- The audio language can now be changed anytime between English and Japanese.

- It subtitles are now displayed when the characters speak at the end or at the beginning of a struggle.

- Shortcuts for Artes in battle are no longer on the right stick, but at L2 and R2. In the original, there were also only C-up and C-down, so nothing has been shortened here. Apart from the shortcuts can be individually configured all buttons.

- Unfortunately, the developers have failed to make even the slightest change to the gameplay technical game. So you have to give up the many desired FreeRun mode. That has always been the biggest blemish on Tales of Symphonia, and therefore it remains while dodging in only two directions in this version.

- Fortunately, the localization remains largely unchanged. This means that the "Demon Fang" in the German version continues "Demon Fang" is, and not about "Demontooth". This trend has been unfortunately noticeable in recent games of the series ... I want to attack with "Sword Rain" but my opponents, and not with "sword rain".

- The PSN typical trophies were also inserted. Some of them are actually pretty hard lumps. The Monster Book and the Item album complete? I know in my circle most one person who succeeded.

- As already mentioned, there are now for each character a new title including costume. The costumes come from newer characters of the series, for example, from Luke Abyss or Pascal of Graces.

- The charging time of the game are very pleasant and are rarely more than two seconds. However, there comes now and then before that the image on the world map for a short time freezes, but this is more the exception.

Conclusion:

For novices, I recommend the game specifically. If you like RPGs and do not know the Tales series, really no way around it. Getting started is indeed gewöhnungsbdürftig, but in which he is not the RPG? It is worth it!

But even those who has already played and loved the original, can strike here again quiet. 40 are not the world and the new Mystic Artes alone and costumes were supposed to justify the purchase ...;)
