As opinions go here so much apart, I will now also have a few hopefully helpful review comments. I use the WD My Cloud in the 4TB version with the latest firmware v03.03.01-156 from 01.08.2014. The "NAS" I have (skeptical) looked after reading the Amazon reviews in an electronics market - and because of the price (199) has there also fitted - immediately taken. The network the MyCloud is integrated via an ASUS RT-66U router. I have not changed the router a release yet assigned the MyCloud a static IP - it is like pre-connected via DHCP and FTP function is turned off. Connection is therefore carried out "plug and play". The preset "Puplic" folder were immediately available. Nevertheless, it was followed by three days of unfulfilled expectations - as described in other reviews here so many times ... Then the firmware upgrade came from 01.08.2014 on the v03.03.01-156 - and the upgrade the surprise !!! - With my copy now everything works as desired: "Stand by" when not in use - with or without a switched on media streaming / iTunes Server - the Time Server is "ON" - backup via WD SmartWare and also the use of the Apple Time Machine backups (for this I have 1TB determined, lest the entire plate is described ) - everything works. The backup runs with me but not continuous, but is set on daily 18:00 clock. The new backup via Time Machine then needed just under 4 hours for 120GB. With the previous Fimrware there were still over 72 hours ... It is important, however, that after importing the firmware in "Settings" - resets the factory settings for "Only System" - "Utility". Then the drive in Windows or OS X is redetected. After the users and shares are re-established, everything is going as expected. Why not so? True to the motto: "never touch a running system ;-)" - I have the automatic firmware update is now off. The WD (auxiliary) programs under OS X Mavericks and Win7Ultimate32bit and Win8.1Pro64bit and Apps (under iOS7) function and also access to the MyCloud externally is fast enough with my DSL 16000. The security of the data on the "NAS" is of course not guaranteed when a defect in the hard drive. Therefore I'll probably save manually via the USB port on a regular basis "Safe Points". But whoever holds its data on an alternative hard disk or on his computer again, should be adequately protected. Please notice again that for all those that is not clear - the USB 3.0 port of MyCloud can not be used for direct data connection to the PC, but merely serves as an extension connector for an additional hard drive. Who does not want to work over the network to the "filling" of the plate (at 1 GB Lan really a problem), the board (lt. Statement of the seller) can probably connect a crossover LAN cable directly to the LAN port of his computer (if someone test could, I would appreciate a comment on my review). Use Wi-Fi is then easily in the daily operation and fast with me with 300MBit / s. If the plate "stand by" in is, of course, they must start for data access only. A "loss" of the disk on the network (as criticized in earlier reviews) I have never experienced before. If WD had the MyCloud same as shipped, then I would have awarded 5 stars - for the buyers be used as a tester, I draw from a star. Who needs a network hard drive for providing its data on your home network and / or a central space for its backups, which I can recommend the WD MyCloud. If you are traveling without any prior knowledge about networks, should possibly be of some help in setting up the user and rights or needs to work through the "Help menu" of MyCloud. I would also "beginners" to encourage - the establishment can be realized with a little time. Last: Whether the data on your cloud are secure with the WD software than on a "Online Cloud" I doubt it - after all, the software "someone" programmed and thus are "back door" is not completely ruled out for NSA & Co.. PS: To complement the functions of the software I'd still like to see a time-controlled switching on / off.
Addendum of 01/21/2014: In the meantime, the MyCloud is two rooms away in my study because my wife has interfered with disk access at the "noise" of the hard disk. Connected she's here by TP-LINK Powerline adapter (network via power line). Again, still everything works as it should (the MyCloud goes into Stand By and previously it has the network also not "automatically resigned"). Should I gather more experience, I will give them further here.
Addendum of 01/02/2014: Creating a Safe Points to an external USB 3.0 hard drive worked just fine (520GB in 16h). The WD MyCloud but requires connection to a large part of their power itself, so that a streaming in time certainly is not recommended. The latest firmware 03.03.02-165 runs in my 4TB copy perfectly so far.
Addendum of 11/01/2015: After the standby behavior of the plate, I was also not always happy 2014 is now running the current SW v04.01.02-417 on the MyCloud without problems. The backup on a connected 4 TB WD Elements also works.
