could order for testing. The delivery scope included a holder, a car charger, quick start in 7 different languages and two multilingual booklet with important safety and product information. Not included in the scope of supply is a mini USB cable, which for
Software and map updates
on the Garmin service page (myDashboard) is absolutely necessary. However, I had several other existing in our household appliances Mini USB cable is available, so I wanted to make the first these updates. After a few teething problems and a time commitment of a total of about 2.5 hours (incl. Load times) I managed that too.
The first that I use Mini USB cable the device is not detected on myDashboard and both German-language instructions for correcting the problem led me to English-language sites, which I unfortunately could not read. With another cable my nüvi 140 but was immediately recognized.
But then I had a little tinkering. Several attempts of map updates failed, probably because I had not made out the software update. Only after all the software updates were loaded and I had started the device (the restart took by loading the software for a while), also worked the map update.
First gadgets
Of course, I played before the first real use at home and on the nüvi 140 T again a bit rum. It occurred to me as the first of the very penetrating loud key tone. No problem I thought, was yet to be seen on the display at once the volume control. With this, however, I reduce the volume of the device overall, the announcements. The key tones are not adjusted separately.
The display size is seen in the price-performance ratio in order. The large display of my TomTom Via 135 However, I am now a bit spoiled.
Otherwise, however, this unit can be operated intuitively. I can make various, playful, in my view, settings because we now have a green car, I chose z. B. for the image to display on the map icon just one vehicle in this color. But also very meaningful setting options are available to me. So you can, for example, U-turns, highways, toll roads, traffic jams or unpaved roads and thus avoid one or another unpleasant traffic bypass in advance.
The language settings I have in addition to many different countries in my mother tongue German 4 settings are available. Since I am with Yannick already with the TomTom Via 135 had befriended, I just let only German, Steffi and Marie on the sidelines and again chose the likeable man.
Most of the existing apps on the device are also gadgets for me. So I could calculate the route with ecoRoute benzinsparendste, listen to audiobooks, have an alarm clock, a calculator, a unit converter, and a phrase book. In foreign cities, however, the park position could certainly eventually be of great benefit to me.
Quite surprised, I realized that I had in some cases even in the apartment GPS reception. The packs the TomTom Via 135 not.
In practice
Although play is fun, but the main purpose of the device's navigation on the road. Before calculating a route I always provides the Navi the adjustment whether in the car or on foot. The latter we have been successfully tested on the road in the favorite pub and some other walking routes to be handled. But actually we do not need this function, because we actually use the Navi only in the car on the ride in less well-known fields.
In the car you get the support of the Navis quickly and easily to the windshield and again. The satellite has been found so always within a few seconds and the desired shortest route calculated just as quickly. The street names are announced in good time before the turns, I felt at every track on which I used so far led the nüvi 140T good and safe. Lane guidance I now know very much appreciated.
Although I will use the navigation device in the future only on longer routes to destinations in other places, I have often had it for testing purposes in the past week on my routes known locally here. The result is very satisfactory. In most cases, it chose exactly the route that I would anyway dangers. Three times it made me realize that I previously never took the shortest route.
Once again, I seem to have not the luckiest, because so far I had on my trips no obstructions so that the TMC traffic report has not yet been tested. So I go far from just the fact that I'm reliably informed about traffic jams or other ride-influencing events and I can then take action.
Annoying was on my first long trip, however the warning when the speed limit is exceeded. This was not announced as with other I have already used navigation devices, but shown via beep. I am definitely not Raserin, every now and then it happens but that I pass a few km / h. A warning is then quite appropriate and actually desired by me. When the then already from 1 to 2 km / h too much - ie not start within the tolerance limit, annoying the simple and also deflects from traffic. Therefore, I have this function now also disabled.
All in all I am satisfied with this navigation device. The satellite reception is even a bit better than the TomTom Via 135 (the route is found 30 40 seconds faster). Nevertheless, the TomTom Via 135 is due to the larger display and the ability to use it as a speakerphone for the cell phone with me when I have both devices are available, remain the first choice.
The Garmin Nuvi 140 T is a solid navigation device for the smaller purses for which I can give an honest buy recommendation.
