First impression
The projector has a white-gray housing with white high-gloss top, which is, however, insensitive to fingerprints. It is striking that the projector compared to other BenQ devices a whole corner is smaller. In my view, a very chic part.
The remote control, however, is less beautiful. It is very small and also the buttons are not illuminated.
Mounting
The BenQ W1070 is mounted at me with a ceiling bracket. Thanks, though not overly large, vertical lens shift, I was a little more flexible with the suspension was concerned, when I was in my previous projectors. Vertical lens shift means that one has the possibility to change the projected image in height without having to move the projector or set it at an angle / hang. So I could hang the projector in my case closer to the ceiling, at the same height of the image, as I could with the devices previously.
Connection
I should mention that the BenQ W1070 seems to be a bit picky when it comes to cable connections to the playback devices. A 10 meter long HDMI cable, which worked smoothly before each resulted in interaction with the W1070 every now and then disconnects. The cable I've already replaced, the way to one that cost only one-third of the previously used. Disconnections there since then no more. So if you have problems with playback via HDMI, should, if necessary, replace the cable.
Operating
The picture of the beamer could convince me immediately. The projection is light and yet so strong contrast that even in not entirely darkened living room can be very well looked. In completely darkened room and playback of full HD material, then really a knack-sharp image with natural colors and very high contrast, great!
I have been able to gather a while experience with various projectors. It has always been necessary, the image settings of the projector extensively adapted to obtain an acceptable image for me in my living room, professional equipment to calibrate the picture, I do not own it. However, the W1070 projected already in the factory setting, such a well-coordinated image that I had to make any changes to these settings in my view.
Even when playback of 3D material, the projector was able to score with me. Since the necessary shutter glasses use up a significant portion of the light, it is important that the projector projects a sufficiently bright image, this is the W1070 the case. For playback of 3D Blu-ray in full HD 24p, ie the standard format of a Blu-ray disc, the BenQ produces a projection which can be viewed with a Shutterfrequenz of 144Hz. This provides a totally flicker-free picture. However, those who, like me initially, exclusively owns shutter glasses that can not shutters with these 144Hz, can not avoid buying new DLP-Link glasses. However, there are very good and cheap alternative to the original glasses type BenQ.
From the projector firmware 1.06 which was published in July 2013, the W1070 accepted the way now almost any 3D input format, such as 1080p / 24Hz in helping Side-by-Side mode. Also diverse Over-and-Under modes are possible. These things I have, however, not even tested, since I currently Zuspiele 3D content exclusively via BD player.
Information on volume of the projector: Yes, you can hear him! I myself, however, had previously also each DLP projectors in use, and these are due to design usually louder than eg comparable LCD models. The W1070 is subjectively a little bit louder than the BenQ W703D, which hung before in my living room, which is probably also the smaller housing the W1070 is probably due, which brings smaller fan and thus a higher number of revolutions makes this necessary. As overly loud or even uncomfortable I not feel the W1070. Here, however, certainly has every own, very personal feelings and who has the opportunity should "listen" to the projector before buying best simply times.
Some people react with DLP projectors, like the W1070 is one, sensitive to the so-called rainbow effect (RBE).
Since each color to be displayed is made up of different colors, which are housed in DLP projectors on a rotating color wheel, these basic colors are strictly for DLP projectors in chronological succession projected. However, the human eye is too slow to recognize this as a rule and the basic colors merge into one color.
Some people can now, especially in projection of content with sharp contrasts or even black and white images, for a brief moment perceive a flash of individual primary colors. I myself am not sensitive to this effect, however, this could provoke eg when W703D aware - this, there are certain ways. When W1070 do not succeed in this. This is likely to be mainly due to the faster rate at which the color wheel rotates the W1070 - 3-fold when W703D and 6-fold the W1070.
Again, you should test the device in doubt before buying to see if you sensitive to this effect.
My Conclusion
Now, after 3 months with the BenQ W1070 I'm very satisfied with the device. For use in my living room, it is just right, so from me 5 stars.
If the long-term operation such as any problems occur, or should I notice more things, so I'll update this text.
UPDTAE 26/11/2013
Because of reports due to dust problems a quick update. Now, after a little more than 6 months with the W1070, with me so far no problems with dust inclusions in the light channel. I had the projector, which I had in use before, exchanged for such a problem, see my review for BenQ W703D. I usually react very sensitively to solcherle things. I have just checked if there are at my W1070 dust grains in the light path by I shot at a black background on the focus wheel. The result is that I is not a single speck of dust in Lichtkamal.
