Such 3D glasses have been around for about 20 years, but they never really worked or mediated no good spatial impression. The Oculus Rift (OR) 2012 has demonstrated that the technology has become so advanced that you can build such a VR glasses with relatively little effort and the mainstream will also buy them. Suddenly all kinds of corporate scent of opportunity and heralded the great 3D era. Soon discovered resourceful developers that 3D glasses can be relatively easy to recreate at home. For not much more than a smart phone and two lenses are required incredible but true. And already saw the Dive into the world, a free kit of a smartphone 3D glasses. A true innovation, the downside: you need a 3D printer to print out the components can. And here we come to Stooksy to speak, also a kit, but it is freely available commercially. But such self-made 3D glasses of strong competition from Oculus Rift has grown?
Mount is in the eating
The kit of Stooksy consists of a foam rubber sheet, where all the parts are stamped. You can build up the glasses without glue and other aids. Unfortunately, the structure does not take a few minutes, as wants us to believe the instructions, but just under an hour, with us there, 45 minutes (my girlfriend is Ikea construction professional). The Assembly has pretty well worked out and the device appears to be quite stable. There are included even a few spare parts (connectors).
A plus point on the Stooksy glasses in any case that you have to perform any installation, because the spectacle itself, as I said, do without technology. 3D app load, tuck smartphone, strapped goggles around his head and there you go. Left and right you can set the eye relief for the two lenses.
By the way: The Stooksy comes with just about all modern smartphones cope, so all iPhones work fine. Unfortunately we have no Galaxy, but that is also running smoothly.
Average immersion
Immersion describes the performance of a virtual world. We have finished the glasses immediately tested with some test programs. The 3D effect is quite impressive. On the positive side, of course, the resolution because, unlike the first version of Oculus Rift, smartphones are of course a lot of high-resolution and provide crisp and clear images. With a roller coaster App immersion was partially very good and lay down in the curves. Unfortunately, the picture is very small, so you will always be aware to wear a helmet, making the immersion flutes goes quickly.
Lack of comfort
Of course, a 3D glasses must also sit comfortable. Unfortunately, that has been well solved in the Stooksy less, because after a short time suppresses the glasses on his nose. In addition, a head strap, which prevents the glasses because of gravity is missing following to slip forward.
Manageable software offer
Unfortunately, there is currently only a very manageable range of software for the Stooksy and to make matters worse, you have to also gather together the few apps and programs still even. However, the manufacturer promises to remedy this situation and to build their own homepage.
Conclusion Lots of fun for little coal
In direct comparison with the Oculus Rift Stooksy can score only with the higher resolution. Although it is stable, but not a looker. The immersion would get in school marks a 3 from me and it is not particularly comfortable either. One must however be aware that the Stooksy costs only a fraction of the Oculus Rift (about 45 euros that are nearly 13% of the price for a Dev Kit 2, with 360 Euro), you do not need 3D printer to come up to her, does not have to buy abroad and no PC needed to experience nonetheless true 3D.
Who has the opportunity to obtain an Oculus Rift, which can Stooksy forgettable. For all other part is a really good starting place and a real party hit. For the price you can hardly do anything wrong and I'll bet you that your friends are already making eyes when they dive for the first time in a virtual reality. Since the disadvantages are quickly forgotten.
Note: I should point out that no one should expect a marvel of engineering, processing or immersion here again. But the price-performance ratio is right in my opinion, therefore, the buy recommendation.
