First of all: I know Tocotronic since the very beginning, and hold them for the best indie band in Germany ever since. But thanks to the chart success of last year the band for every rock fan should not be a blank slate more now! Accordingly profound is the curiosity of the listener to what the band did in the days when she was not yet in the business as large (and was still celebrated by many!). It can in this case, make perfect sense, this disc (cheap) zuzulegen to determine how Tocos to have belonged still 5-6 years ago. Especially when so far only the latest discs "Sound and the Fury" and "surrender" of the band knows, and as for the previous discs of the band is suspicious and has reservations. In this case, then you have this disc, and can get an idea about the early work of the band many for successful holding as the late work. Presumably, you will then be surprised at how well Tocotronic sound here, though unlike the slices of "Berlin trilogy". Many will then probably think: ".. Well, that will then probably be the best songs the rest is presumably scrap, because otherwise one would have already heard something about this song!" But this is not so. In certain "communities" (pupils, students, indie scene) since was the latest "digital is better" announced that it is this is a very big indie band that was then ncoh coming. In the mainstream rather slowly got around. And therefore the early discs were also very good; and some will probably even be "immortal", and still be heard in decades; most notably "Digital is Better", the ingenious Debut album the band from Hamburg. Also equal to 5 Songs disc, covering the first 10 years of the band, taken over - from this ingenious Debut album are therefore on this "Best Of". A better choice and I would not have taken; also I think these 5 songs for the best of "digital is better", even if the other songs of this ingenious slice them hardly inferior in something. Furthermore a total of 7 songs of discs come from "Remembrance of Things Past", "We come to complain about", and "It does not matter, but". In fact, these Successor albums no longer had as much class as the Debut Album; there was nciht so many new ideas; and so it has taken less of songs. With the selection of the best songs we have here yet made a good choice when you consider that these albums were not soo good anyway. Then come 3 songs of the much acclaimed album "KOOK", where more than in the albums previously worked with many new, different musical instruments, sound and electrical modern studio technology, and with the already announced a change of direction in the music. Lyrically the album is very controversial. Known of these songs is likely to be above all "Let There Be Rock"; but I think the other two songs "Jackpot" and especially "The boundaries of good taste" for much successful, and probably also other songs on the album that are quiet here would in my opinion, can not accept. Here are 3 songs from the album "Tocotronic", which personally do not particularly convince me. The choice of songs: goes like! The last 3 songs from the album "Pure Reason Must Never Win", which - somewhat incomprehensible for me! - One of the most (commercially) successful albums of the band counts at all. The song "Against the Grain", however, is awesome. The other two songs: well! On the other hand, the record company is to make no reproach; because this disc was purchased yes; because then you have to stop wearing the (alleged) public taste bill!
The albums "surrender" and "Sound and the Fury" have been added only later, after this compilation, and therefore no longer included in this! Though of course these two latest, the band's albums are very good.
Acquired taste? Who the songs these should therefore like "Best Of", which can buy studio albums without great risk the original; because many of the other songs of these discs are also very good! Still Cautious should first and most likely to be the two very good CD's "Digital ..." and engage "KOOK". The purchase of these two discs will not regret for sure then! The other slices of this band I guess then already much more caution!
Should you - vice versa - the first disc toco- these have here you can then - if you like - of course without great risk the two latest toco- slices "Kapitualation" and "sound ..." set. Because these two CD'S are also very good, and not without reason in this country stormed the charts. In addition, you can of course also get the original disks.
The only question remains: what then do with this compilation after that, if you have bought later then the other (good) CD's of the band? What sense does this then? Presumably, you will then be able to separate this from the CD again, and offering for sale in Amazon; for it is then in the meantime become unnecessary. And so this "Best Of" would the fate of all "Best Of" - share CD's of great bands, where (almost) every studio album, it would have been worth it, as a kind of "best of" - album to appear again! With really good bands you need namely no "Best Of" It is then like the Beatles or the Rolling Stones: it makes more sense to have one or more original studio albums as a "Best Of" This is true above all for the brilliant albums "KOOK" and especially "digital ..."; neither of these two original discs I'd want to swap for this "Best Of", because each of these two CD's for yourself is better than this alleged "Best Of" Albums like "After a lost time", "We are coming ...", "It does not matter ..." and "Tocotronic", and also "Pure Reason ..." I think, however then for relatively dispensable when this "Best Of" has "!
And another thing: at Tocotronic the singles are often not the best songs the studio CD! So better do not buy singles of the band!
CONCLUSION: a good overall "Best Of" - even though the choice of songs from the album "KOOK" one probably drive one of the best recent German bands. is not quite succeeded. A good selection of songs from all the band's albums up to that! Especially for "beginners" this band suitable and for people who do not want to believe that Tocotronic even before "surrender" a very good band was, and then convinced with this cross-section of songs! - Although this albums like "digital is better" and "KOOK" would be suitable even more comfortable with. - Therefore only 4 stars from me!
