good economical NAS for home users; Notes on Performanc (Jumbo Frames) and hibernation

Synology Disk Station DS413 NAS server to 16TB (1GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM, 4-Bay SATA II, 2x USB 3.0) (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

1) survey
+ Really very quiet
+ Installation of 4 plates super easy
+ Intuitive user interface (DSM 4.1), comfortable EZ Internet Wizard to set up dynamic DNS and port forwarding on the router
+ Remote maintenance and data exchange via DDNS and browser
+ 1x E-SATA and 2xUSB3.0 for connecting external hard drives (each factor to 2x USB 2.0)
+ Economical, special system-idle state in which not only HD in hibernation but whole system (especially fans)
+ Many RAID configurations
+ Many functions: DDNS, (S) FTP, Media Server (not tested), Photo Station, Web server (not tested), Mail Server, Webcam Surveillance (not tested), NTP Time Server, Syslog, e-mail notifications, user / group / access control, disk quota and bandwidth limitations, rsync, Backupreplikator, Cloud, ...
+ Many additional packages to install (even third-party) and apps
= Optional DVBT (untested not supplied,) via USB dongle
= Price
- Hibernation depends on your network environment (ARP, Internet service provider)
- Not all e-SATA disks / Ctrl recognized (WD MyBook ok, ok MyStudio, Verbatim (47527) NOK
- No HDMI port (for media to play directly on TV without DLNA)

2) Compare / recommendation
+ Recommended for home users who really need 4 Bay Square, pays attention to low power consumption and does not require top performance, but rather a lot of features
= DS412 + to be a little faster and brings with 2xLAN connections, but also costs about 100, - more and consumes more power
= QNAP TS469-L is the same price as DS412 + and should lt. C'T be more performant
I = would personally the next time any of the two alternatives mentioned engage because hibernation in my area does not work optimally and deliver this a little more performance

3) Environment
Set NAS as SHR (equivalent RAID5) of 4x 3TB WD Red drives a (were only 20, - more expensive, otherwise I would have taken the Green)
UPC / Chello Cable Internet Provider (100Mbit / sec download, but only 10Mbit / sec upload)
D-Link DIR-855 wireless router with Gigabit Ethernet connections
Core 2 Duo PC with onboard NIC Realtek RTL8168 / 8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Windows7, 32bit
Jumbo Frames in NAS and NIC on 4KB MTU enabled
have time (exceptional) and NAS drives not ordered via Amazon (although price would have been even slightly cheaper), not to transport plates via Post

4) Performance
+ E-SATA and USB3.0 are a factor of about 2 faster than via USB 2.0 connected external hard drives
= Measurements should generally be treated with caution, because there are always a number of factors to arrive (filesize, network, PC ...)
+ I reach about the performance with Samba / SMB / CIFS expelled 22/2012 Test as c't Heise
+ Average 45MByte / Sec write and 65MByte / sec Read on rather large files (700MB - 1.4GB - 2GB), but which are typical in my application environment (video)

5) Note for hibernation / Hiberntate (see also synology.com Forum)
+ Working principle
- But depends on your network environment, because NAS wakes upon receipt of ARP packets on
- If ARP cycle is very common, better only use HD hibernation, because otherwise continuous change betw Sleep / Wake.
- Have not been restricted in my area if UPC or D-Link router is the polluter and not found a the ARP packets to prevent, to filter or increase the ARP timeout

6) Note for Jumbo Frames
+ Bring something principally performance (especially when reading via CIFS)
- But do not work in any network environment (best test with direct connection PC / NAS via CAT5e CAT6 cable OD without switch and router in between)
= The D-Link DIR-855 router supports in principle switch part of jumbo frames, so I had no davorhaengen Switch for PC and NAS
= Although my NIC lt. Drivers under Win7 / 32bit Supports up to 7KB MTU, I could only go to 4KB MTU (otherwise not connected to the NAS)
= Possibly increases performance a bit in 7KB - 9KB MTU (I did not test konnnte)

7) Note on port forwarding and email alerts
= My router D-Link DIR-855 will not be offered in LOV DSM router configuration, but is on the Compatibility List, and the automatic setup worked as I have just switched to another D-LINK router in the LOV Wizard.
= Some Internet providers (eg UPC) refuse generated by NAS SMTP mail from (error message 552, unsolicited header / SPAM), here either other email providers take (so I've solved), or you have to manually postfix config #relayhost on the NAS adapt (eg via SPK package Config Editor Fil) [untested]
