Explicit speed measurements I have not done, but the read and write speeds are consistently in good areas at about 40-60MB / s in the gigabit network. In the reaction speed of the user interface, there are also no problems and overall it is a liquid through the menus as the DLink DNS320L an acquaintance.
The fan most of the time actually does not work and keeps the temperatures of the installed Seagate ST3000DM001 plates at fairly constant 48 degrees, measured short-term peak value was 56 degrees.
The average 48 degrees correspond almost exactly to the values that reached a Synology DS414j for "Quiet" setting in our office.
Once the fan starts up briefly, should sensitive ears in the living room, however, find no pleasure. Average one must expect that the drives of the fans in connection with access to reports 1-2 times per hour short. Compared to the DLink DNS320L he is however still significantly less conspicuous.
The Twonky Media Server has been tested shortly and here too, the setup is complete much faster than in the DLink device.
Overall, the performance offered is so fine and you should not interfere in the temporarily-starting fan, the shuttle NAS is quite suitable for the living room. MySQL and many other apps like Synology does not exist, but just the right low power consumption and easy setup makes the NAS for a variety of "normal" home users for a good entry-level device. Anyone looking for something full living room compatible and loves variety of functions, however, is here canceled bad and should look more at Synology.
