The D7000's still the best camera in some leaderboards, despite the age. Dust and dirt Water Rights, 39 cross-type sensors, etc. The D5200 has the brand new 24MBpix sensor to less noise despite higher resolution, a folding screen, and a great video function, new EXPEED 3 Processor. Exactly these features have me then also moved the D5200 to give preference.
Meanwhile, I have tested the D5200 extensively, the following aspects are struck me positively:
+ Hammer Sensor 24MPix. Great team with 16-85 Nikkor lens. It really is at DXolabs as a best sensors in the market.
+ Folding screen is sharp, easy to operate (by folding out) and shows the main features clearly. Very good.
+ Service is great, as usual Nikon. Actually I missed the direct ISO setting of the Nikon D80 and the independent rotating wheels in manual exposure, but the Nikon D5200 in the top resolved.
+ The video function is exactly as they should be. Prima to use, with no frills, it must be that.
+ Battery Charger. Some like it probably will not, but this wireless design I think real progress.
+ Many key as usual in exactly the right spot: exposure compensation, serial / time triggers, etc.
+ Trigger with remote release now also of "back".
But also a few negative aspects I have noticed that bother me (hopefully reading Nikon with, so that will be implemented in the D7x00).
- Handle. Is too small. I am the Nikon D80 used, and yes, the D7000 falls in there as well. The D5200 is just a compact size and the D7000 is a mid-size. In the D5200 my little finger reaches into space, and at a decent flash and lens, the body is "somehow".
- Battery life. Feels only a quarter of the D80, a clear step backwards. Comes certainly from the live view and video-films. Does not really. For longer trips, a second battery is needed.
- Series in RAW. Is stored in memory in an eternity, and this is there already a Class 10 memory card that draws the data.
- Image size can not be changed in RAW (or I have not found, is always locked with me).
- Histogram: Unusual be determined by the division, the histogram might be good more, or over the image.
Neutral my points are still failed
o Some buttons do not have a clear pressure point, other.
o Not for lenses that do not have a zoom motor (to get over).
o conversion of focal points, D-Lightning, image size etc. goes beyond the Info menu on the display (the button must be pressed twice). This is awkward. At least the choice of focal points should go directly to a button (located on the Fn key have the ISO!). The absence of the direct change from Spot / Matrix Metering can just get over so, in direct access would be better.
o Built-in HDR function is nice, but better with HDR Post Processing.
o stereo microphone. The quality is ok, there must not expect too much you.
o Missing Top display. Who is so used to working, for the absence is quite a change. But also goes.
In summary, I am satisfied with the D5200, the price is reasonable (also for the sensor, I said that is better than me?), Above all, the good video function makes some negative aspects up for it. As the biggest drawback I see the geratenen too weak battery.
23/04/2013 supplement two weeks practical test in the Canaries.
I have tested the Nikon D5200 now two weeks on the Canaries extensively. I have been doing portrait and landscape photography made with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8, 35mm Nikkor 1.8, Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 and the Nikkor 16-85mm 3.5-5.6. I mainly photographed with aperture priority.
Generally, I can confirm the impression already described above. Especially I noticed:
1. Battery indicator. The display seems to me strange and does not seem to me to decrease linearly. I also do not understand why the battery life is "3 bar" appears in, that's really not up-to-date. It does not have to be like the smartphone in 1% increments, but 5% but steps would be up to date? Once there is me therefore happens is that the battery life for video so quickly went to his knees, that I had actually households so. I've always taken from the day the second battery.
2. As one commentator has noted: who's D80, D90 or D7000 used the Nikon, will have difficulty making settings via the display. ISO I have brought upon the function key that goes. But to choose self-timer / remote control and bracking via the Info menu and then click through - puuuh which already requires patience. Really a disadvantage of D5200 - and the advantage of the D7000 / D7100, the better the can.
3. folding screen. For video really great and convenient. Especially when shooting from unusual perspectives super (children height etc.). Recommended feature in Nikon D5200.
4. One more comment about the lenses in combination with the Nikon D5200: The fixed focal length lenses are great, so what can I say. The ultra wide-angle Tokina (newer version) is "knackscharf", even at f 4 already, even at the edges. Highly recommended with the D5200. Sole Nikkor 16-85mm when I got pictures of a different quality in terms of sharpness. Especially when the focal length of 85mm, some images "hands-free" have become off-center focus, despite aperture 8, and sufficient (<1/100) exposure time. That's odd, because photos with tripod and 85mm also be "knackscharf". So this may have been due only to my "shake hands", I have to investigate again whether that was really the cause.
5. Surprisingly, I have the above LCD menu, which I was used by the Nikon D80, no longer missing. That's OK, because you can get used to.
Conclusion: As I ordered the D5200, there was not yet the D7100. Viewed solely the Nikon D5200 is a top camera and offers a lot for the money - ie price-performance ratio.
Today there is also the Nikon D7100. How would I decide now? Here are a few considerations:
PRO Nikon D5200:
- Cheaper
- Good to make videos for folding screen
- Lighter, smaller body
- Good for default settings and rare use of special functions such as bracketing etc.
- Comes with less battery power deal
Nikon D7100 PRO (compared to paper)
- Better battery performance
- Direct access by means of buttons on special functions without route via the Info menu
- Camera is dust and dirt
- Medium-sized, tactile grip housing
For me, just the direct access to some features important. Therefore, it will probably soon a Nikon D7100 be with me. But as of now I realize that I will miss the folding screen of the D5200, let the rotating prima videos. The best would be just a combination of both ;-)).
