With "Belonging" was launched in 1974, the relatively short, by many but respected as a most exciting project of Keith Jarrett band phase with the European Quartet to the Northmen Garbarek, Danielsson and Christensen. Parallel worked Jarrett mid seventies still the clear experimental oriented American Quartet and were of course continue his improvised solo concerts. As on the later album "My Song" are also on "Belonging" six pieces assembled, each have their best phase when the saxophone of Jan Garbarek is reluctant or impossible to hear. Too often it dominates the title namely just too strong and the principle very lyrical, harmonious interplay of instruments device thus out of balance. The highlights on "Belonging" are the gently-worn "Blossom", then - except for a somewhat strenuous midsection - the piece "'Long As You Know You're Living Yours" and the funky-splashy "The Windup". From the opening track "Spiral Dance" are on YouTube a 14-minute version of a recording of Hannover from 1974, in which the piece can unfold better than on the CD version that is faded out. Also with a little more than two minutes too short title track "Belonging" ends already, if you have just been listening to the number. In the longest 13 minutes Track "Solstice" is again Garbarek saxophone a bit too pushy. In the "sax-less" passages on the other hand develop very beautiful piano and bass lines. Despite some criticisms: Jazz great, five star!
