The book was very well - about 130 pages.
The first 25 pages take an introduction to color spaces, exposure meter, light quality and a summary of the light converter (soft boxes, umbrellas etc.). The scope of this introduction is just right. I've read plenty of books that deal with the subject of studio lighting and then describe over hundreds of pages of the equipment, without considering enough the technology.
Then also you start off going on with the practice. Here you realize that a real pro at work. There are shown for each setting as photos, where you learn a lot. For example, a series of a classic head / shoulder-portraits, in which the soft box is always positioned farther away. It takes some time until you get a feel for the differences in the softness of light looks, but that just makes the difference then.
Significant additional chapters:
- Softboxes / umbrellas in practice
- Backlight with many practical examples
- Hair light
- Very good chapter on High and Low Key Photography
The author gives in the book also has some very practical blueprints for reflectors and other accessories, which you can save a lot of money.
The quality of the pictures in the book is very good - especially the pictures are all big enough, the print quality is excellent.
The only downside is the cover of the book, which is very thin and not stable.
In summary, it does not surprise me that this is one of the most widely read and recommended books on studio lighting in the English language.
To be hoped that there will be a German translation.
