EDIFIER S530D 2.1 speaker system (145 Watt) with infrared remote controller and wired controller, black (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

Hello There!

Have the Edifier S530D now for several weeks and have tested it extensively.

Short for what purpose and why I decided just for the S530D: I'm using the system in the rec room, where there is a gaming PC, PS3 and XBox360 fired with sound, pitch about 1m. Before, I used the Logitech Z4. Since my Z4 but was too weak and I occasionally would also like listening to music with the system (where the Z4 has been due to the small, cheap plastic Satellite glaring weaknesses in the high and mid-range) had to be something better. Alternatively, it would of course to a combination of amplifier / AV Receiver + reasonable Regallautsprecher think, but I would have to stand around a no place guzzling AV receiver in the hobby room, and on the other hand are the strengths of such a combination more in the music. My focus is, however, primarily on gaming, which is precisely the strengths of a 2.1 system are like the Edifier.

First impression of the box:
====================================
Was written as in other reviews, initially falls on a very massive and heavy subwoofer. The satellite speakers are solid and have a decent weight. Everything looks very high quality of processed what I also expect for the price. Absolutely no comparison with Logitech or devil plastic howler cubes, here you have sufficient volume to also generate wirlich massive speaker reasonable midrange. Even the look of an absolute treat. Contrary to some other reviews my set were in high-quality cables, which also + and - are marked in color. The copper wire is even silver. Also, the cross section of the cable is sufficient for the satellite. Here Edifier has reworked apparently. Caution: In the wired remote control is hardly to be seen protector. In another review someone wrote that his display was scratched. I thought so too until I noticed, however, only after a very closer look and multiple "Knibbeln" on the edge, that there is actually a protective film on it.
The connection of the complete system was very easy and fast from the hand. The cable of the satellite speakers can be easily attached to the terminals.

Features and Accessories:
=========================
In addition to the said silvered speaker cables also is an analog connector cable (jack to RCA) and an optical digital cable. The infrared remote control is kept very spartan and could be more comfortable. Well, it served its purpose, you can carry with you all sound settings, balance, select the inputs, adjust brightness in 7 steps (from does not work!), Mute and standby. Contrary to some reviews, I can use the remote control my system send to standby (the cable-FB LED then pulsates only, the display is off) and the system remembers my sound settings even after complete separation from the power (I have everything on a power strip with switch). Here Edifier has probably also reworked because that should have been different in older revisions of the system. So I have absolutely nothing to complain.
With the infrared remote control can also bass and treble from -6 to +6 Adjust (unfortunately only in steps of 2. so 0, +2, +4, etc.) as well as the subwoofer power from -10 to +10 in increments of 1. I personally prefer the subwoofer to +10 and Bass and Treble to 0. Depending on the piece of music I sometimes lift Treble also slightly.

On subwoofer Two analog RCA inputs and two digital inputs are: 1x optical and coaxial 1x.

Sound impression:
================
Now the most important thing, the sound. I must say in advance that I have here quite discerning. In the living room I use to listen to music quality Nubert tower speaker, the sound to play, according to various reviews in the upper class, to a high-quality AV receiver. I wanted to mention, because sound or sound quality, of course, always is completely subjective and depends heavily on the respective claims of the listener only. I do not call myself a audiophile high-end sound fetishists, but know quite how music sounds on expensive and high-quality speakers (via Plastikbrüllwürfel- or plastic pole systems such. B. Bose or Devil One can only smile).

After I tested the Edifier S530D extensively through its paces, I can say for myself that the system provides a homogeneous, honest and firm level sound that's fun and for the price more than is okay. The highs are clear and just the critical in such systems midrange is absolutely okay. Here comparable systems from Logitech or devil try so happy times the weak to hide (to almost non-existent) midrange by more bass. But not when Edifier. The mids are clear and come nicely even with z. B. Rock advantage. Sure, my Nuberts one hears in comparison again a marked difference, particularly in the high and mid range, but also play in a completely different league. However, the sound of the Edifier for the price and small size really does not have to hide. In computer games, the system rumst quite formidable and is built on such a dynamic and airy soundstage that very few will miss a 5.1 system (I personally miss absolutely not). It sounds easier than the middle.
Even with music, it produces a clear and homogenous sound and makes both at low and at high levels of fun. Granted it reaches not quite the "airiness" and broad stage of good bookshelf speakers. But hey, we're not talking about high-quality 260 hifi bookshelf speakers (like the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 and Dali censor 1), but by a Plug & Play complete system that includes a subwoofer and amplifier for 220.

The coordination with the subwoofer is optimally, no annoying audible frequency overlays. For subwoofer must be said that this is indeed sufficient bass strong, but overall more in the background holding (which I personally find very positive). I put the subwoofer with me to the highest level and Bass to "0". Since lot can get done, even at high volume levels. Those who prefer more bass-heavy, provides the bass to the highest level (to me personally too much). Absolute bass fetishist or receiver of very bass-heavy music will be perhaps disappointed with the bass of the S530D and should rely more on the bigger brother, the S730D, which has an absolutely brutal subwoofer.

Conclusion Sound: Gaming: 9/10 points Music: 7/10 points

Addendum digital vs. analog input
=======================================
I originally wrote this in reviews that the analog input is audible worse than the digital input (tested both with onboard sound and a SB Audigy 2). Now that I have an Asus Xonar DX have worried me, I have to revise that. Had I not thought, but the SB Audigy 2 has a significantly poorer D / A converter as the Xonar DX. With the latter is between analogue and digital input absolutely no difference to hear. So if you want to operate the system analogous to the PC, a good sound card with high quality D / A converter is absolutely mandatory!

Who the 2 digital and 2 analog inputs of the Edifier S530D not rich and who wants to connect more devices digitally, I recommend the InLine 19999C Toslink audio video switcher 40. So a small box with an optical output and three inputs that are by can switch remote control. To myself and to PS3, XBox360 and PC all digital plug it is working properly.

Conclusion:
=======

The Edifier S530D is perfect for those who

- Find a system that plays off its strengths especially in film and computer games, but can also convince for occasional music listening (insbs in the midrange.) And here significantly from plastic table horns (several Logitech, Samsung, Bose, Hama, Devil & Co.) apart.
- Honest, homogeneous and clear sound with discreet but sufficiently strong bass want. Bass fetishists are wrong here.
- Want to have are no space-consuming amplifier / AV Receiver + stand / bookshelf speaker combination.
- Make do with the few entrances of the S530D. Or one gets plus such an optical switch as described above, then you can also connect more than one device visually.
- Dispense with 5.1

Most comfortable the system feels natural on the PC as an entertainment system, but if you do not need high-end surround system, it is also suitable for the living room's.

Not suitable for the S530D

- Music lovers with very high expectations who are looking for a speaker system primarily for listening. These are better served with a combination amplifier + bookshelf speakers (z. B. Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 or Dali censor 1). Or bespw. with active studio monitors such as the Adam Artist 5 or Nubert NuPro A 20th But is both more expensive.
- People expect for 220 sound like in the cinema
- Bass fetishists or friends of very bass-heavy music, who want to feel the bass throughout the body. For this, the subwoofer can be undersized.

Personally, I am absolutely convinced by Edifier and do not want to give it. In the hobby room at the PC it's perfect, all I need there. Since sound is of course still room for improvement, I give in total good 4/5 star.
