PoE does not live by graphic gimmickry (although I find the presentation not so bad and above all full of atmosphere), it does not provide vollvertonten epic cutscenes or slight carnage a la Diablo. No, when Diablo is a hamburger (tasty, but rather in between), PoE is an opulent meal. You have to take your time and enjoy it - and it's not for everyone. When Baldur's Gate and its successor (whether directly or in spirit) appeared, the genre of RPG on the PC was for me next to the strategy division a showpiece. Unfortunately ebbed connect from the level. Although I like Dragon Age (I and also quite Inquisition, but not Part II) played one or The Elder Scrolls, as sometimes Diablo and Torchlight II as a quick bite, but a mammoth game as time is long gone appeared: too dry, too complex and not beginner-friendly it was often (I exaggerate so understood that it also held a grown players for a 10 year old that has to be lured with cutscenes).
PoE makes it very, very much properly and also much better than Baldur's Gate that you have not copied blindly. It took a lot of virtues, polished uneven and focused mainly on the playful element: The specially created world, the plot, the characters, the dialogue, the game system and the game play. Not everything is perfect, the German translation (although generally very tidy) is not always so fit and the locking system is m. E. not quite optimal, but these are minor points.
When I lost a character after less than 40 minutes of the game (and without fault of their own and apparently prescribed as mandatory loss), which already made a great impression in dialogues and I had been initially planned as the first party member, as already jumped a spark. Obsidian is for those small but skilful handles not too bad to create atmosphere - and succeed consistently. But the game is based on not only an outstanding setting, it allows the players enough freedom to simply do something else than to follow the main line of action. The fights are partly tactically quite challenging, a targeted approach is often more advisable than blind wedges. The many characters who often good dialogues (with options) and also the detailed written sequences (one must not be read lazy) make a plunge into a large game world.
I'm very happy that such a game even today still has a chance in the market. It's certainly not for everyone, but what in the world is already. Who RPGs like to appreciate a good story with a great kind of narrative, a credible gaming world and a little more sophisticated game system knows should absolutely access. And I have to go again, there is still so much to do ...
